  • Warning: Spoilers
Not since Magical Girl Madoka have I ever been so floored by an anime series seemingly being one thing on the surface, yet being something so much more sinister and brutal at the core.

Going into this show, I only knew one thing; that the main protagonist, Subaru, can come back to life after dying. This is a pretty cool plot device and I decided to give it a go.

The first episode is decent- Subaru is essentially a gamer nerd that for some reason is not at all shocked or surprised to be transported to this other world. There is some slap-stick comedy and it is pretty light hearted. It didn't seem like this was going to be that different or a show, until he is straight up butchered and returns to when he first showed up in the new world. Now he must re-trace his steps...and then gets butchered again in only a few minutes. Now he must re-re-trace his steps...you get the idea. It is a great concept and creates an aspect of a thriller/ horror, especially when he meets his (First) killer in passing several hours before he was previously killed.

The first half of the season does some great world building and the main characters are all likable and three-dimensional. It does a great job helping Subaru grow as a character as his total lack of social skills that in the beginning were annoying, slowly get better and he becomes pretty likable. I will admit that there are some love-interest tropes here that are pretty cringe, but this is how I would imagine a person with no social skills to act in some strange new world: Like the protagonist of an RPG with very rigid gender roles and only a fictional understanding of how relationships work.

The second half though...BRUTAL. This is where I liken this to Magical Girl Madoka. Subaru had success going back in time during his previous deaths, but when he literally is butchered and destroyed over and over and over again, he starts to go crazy. It is shockingly well done and I'd even compare it to some David Lynch type horror: Watching your friends, innocent children, and yourself be butchered and murdered over and over without making any headway into finding a way to break the cycle.

When he finally does, and the White Whale battle happens, the series really transcends into 9/10 territory. Yes the romances are still weak, but everything else is so well done that I can forgive that.

I cannot wait for season 2!
  • Re: Zero is proof that the Isekai genre will never die. It always gets reincarnated into something better, and this anime is proof of all that. It's thrilling, psychological, action, and everything anime has to offer. It starts out like a typical isekai, MC, goes to other world blah blah blah, but it's more than that. It literally strains the characters to the brink but yet still keeps a sense of self. Also, the character interactions in this anime are so well played out and wonderfully worded. Just from the dialogue alone, Re: Zero brings heartfelt friendship and sacrifice to the table that other anime have not done before. The characters are so memorable, Subaru, Rem, Emilia, Ram, and so much more! I can't wait to see more of this amazing show!
  • At first the main character is kind of naive (but likable) but as the show goes on, about halfway through the first season, he gets increasingly whiney, petty, and jealous. It was hard to watch and I was going to stop watching but I liked the action scenes and the worldbuilding so I gave it another try. The show gets a lot better towards the end of the first season. The second season is slow, like other reviews have mentioned, but it has it's good parts. Whole episodes in the second season could have been removed. They were going for emotional scenes that kind of miss the mark and drag on. If you are going to watch, be prepared for a protagonist who you actually start to hate at points but gets better over time. The ending of the second season leaves a lot unresolved (but the ending itself I was happy with).

    This show is - amazing.

    Go watch this NOW.

    NOW.

    I'M NOT KIDDING.

    Anyways...

Re zero is a 2016 anime series about a teenage boy Subaru transported to a magical world. He then met a half elf half girl Emilia. Then they go on a journey to find Emilia's stolen stuff. But, they then got murdered. Subaru then transported back to where he first entered this world. A 25 episode magical emotional adventure begins.

Don't fooled by this boring premise because this anime has SERIOUSLY GOOD WRITING. Everything in this anime evolves from meh, to omfg. I can't say anymore because it will becomes a spoiler, and so I just wanna advise you all dive into this series with an open mind.

The artwork and the sounds are also very great, although I won't say it's amazing. If you look closely to some of the frames, you might spot some quality down tier. But then they hide it very well so eh? Who cares.

Overall I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you guys to check it out. And so, yeah, do it. You'll be amazed.
  • People who thought that this anime story is ruined after only seeing half of the episodes, are in hell of a surprise! this anime keeps getting better week after week. Its an emotional roller coaster. Anime fans shouldn't miss this amazing ride. A helpless boy struggling to do things right and returning from death to correct his mistakes is everybody's fantasy. Subaru the protagonist is the character you will fall in love with, although most of the times you might hate him, you might feel sorry for him or you might even get annoyed by him but at the end of the day you will admire him. This anime story is well written, it makes the viewer stay at the edge of their seat. With the end of each episodes every week, you just crave to know what might happen next episode. I hope they make more than 30 episodes for this series.
  • This may very well be one of the best shows I've ever watched. Every week I find myself wondering what it's going to happen next, how is the main protagonist going to get out of this particular situation. Not to mention the voice acting and overall world building is phenomenal! This is definitely a show that is binge worthy! This show easily makes my top-five anime list!
  • Re: Zero is less of an Isekai and more of a Thriller. It balances dark themes extremely well. The focus on characters and their motives are what makes this show so interesting. People like Roswaal and Echidina are what give this show such an aura of mystery and horror. The soundtrack is amazing and the gore is never sugarcoated and always makes you uneasy. Re: Zero is a show that has a lot of potential and I can't wait for future episodes.

The storytelling in this anime is just divine. The characters, the visuals, the soundtrack, they are just perfect. Highly recommend this anime- although there isn't as much fighting/action scenes compared to other animes, the main selling point is the story telling, and it has done well.
  • It's got everything you could possibly want from an anime. It has magic, action, alot of comedy, romance and at times its really dark. There's something in it for everyone in this anime and its just a really good show. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Why
God this series has some moments. Some especially good ones towards the end of the second season and first. But as you continue on you begin to realize that Subaru is a total idiot.

The man will mess up and continue riding the wave of having things go wrong and letting people close to him die until he dies in the most horrific way possible. Why doesn't he just reset as soon as he has one slip-up, or as soon as someone important dies. It would save time and the shock value of the show wouldn't totally diminish after the first few times it happens.

    Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost this story is just amazing, like really good, and the novels just show that it will keep improving. Unfortunately the protagonist is really misunderstood. For people saying he does not have character development, "have you even seen the show?! He gets amazing character development and super realistic one too, but some people can't wrap their heads around it. For people who say the protagonist is a simp. Do simps ever get the girl? Hell no. Guess what he did!. It's mostly salty reviewers or people who want super overpowered protagonists that beat their enemies with "tHe PoWer Of frIeNdShip" and not be realistic at all, these people unfortunately bring the shows ratings down, so sincerely to you as someone who clearly understands the story: "You are massive idiots".

This TV-series consists of great episodes and episodes which are difficult to complete. This is because of the story itself, which is an attempt to subvert a common isekai trope. Instead of an overpowered person arriving in a new world expecting to have a lot of fun, we have an immature jerk arriving in a new world who is anything but overpowered. The result is predictable; he has the worst time of his life. He does have one power, which is the ability to come back to an earlier point in time each time he is killed, and he dies a lot. The basic story is one of an immature child learning how to be an adult and it's a painful process. This is well worth a watch and if you come across an episodes when the main protagonist is just too painful to watch, preserve as it will be worth it, in the long term.
  • Overall this is a good anime although i think show gets worse the more you watch it but Character development in this anime is horrible imo.... our protagonist is shown as a kind hearted boy with a little foolishness and for about half of the show....then suddenly in just one episode he turnes into a complete pease of garbage as a person with mind blowing stupid decisions and reactions for no reason at all..... then he turns into a fearless badass leader the next episode and i don't get it how.... reminding you that this kid never considered suicide for an option when it could actually change something.
  • Can't wait to see season 2. As my opinion, this is one of the best anime series that I ever watch. White Fox Co., Ltd, please release season 2. Don't end like this because it is too good for not to end like this.
  • Masterpiece, it's so good for isekai genre. Best isekai for me, this just different.

Story line So good. I am waiting S3 now. The best anime❤
  • samak473 April 2021
Rezero is a masterful character study This series is so godly.
  • Top notch anime! one of the best there is out there at the moment. Each episode is better then the last and WOW OMG LAST EPISODE WAS FIRE PURE FIRE! Is incredible story intrigues mystery and action.

The characters, the world everything is incredibly well made and super different then anything else out there. Give it a try.

Ps The Pilot episode is a little dull to introduce the watcher into the world and action,

PSS : Watch until the last second! Usually in anime you get a preview for the next episode, but here you get the most important part Summary: A must see! Can't wait for the next episode to appear.
  • Re zero with its 2 seasons so far is certainly one of my favourite anime. Personally, I like animes in which if a wound is inflicted, blood does ooze out. If you're one of those, just go give this anime a try. And one important thing about this anime is its mysterious plot. If u are to give this anime only as much attention as you would give to the ones like Naruto, One piece or regular animes, probably u won't understand much. U have to give full attention to each dialogue and facial features to understand this anime, as not a lot is clearly spoken by characters. BASICALLY GIVE MORE ATTENTION!!. THIS IS THE PART OF THIS ANIME THAT MAKES IT BOTH IRRITATING AND EXHILARTING!!

AND YO, This is an anime u will love to rewatch, coz a lot of things u missed and didn't understand will make perfect sense then. GOOD LUCK!
  • Re: Zero gave me some of that Steins;Gate feeling I was longing for, and made me go crazy theorizing about conspiracies and figuring how the world worked. It was growing within me faster than the episodes aired. And it was from studio White Fox, the same one that did Steins;Gate, another good sign. I can't pinpoint the episode, but it peaked sooner than I thought. I was very intrigued by everything by the middle, and some episodes were pure joy to watch. Slowly, it started to forget everything that made it cool and mysterious, flat out ignoring things that they told about the story and plowing through content as if there was no tomorrow. The last fourth of the anime was barely watchable, with a very lackluster ending. It made a perfect bell graph, or a roller coaster with a single bump if you prefer. The overall experience still makes it a nice watch and can hold the score enough, but it gets really painful if you think about the true potential it had.

    Warning: Spoilers
(Some minor spoilers included will be marked with big letters when done) Re: Zero is one of the best anime recently released. So far, up to episode 15, the plot has been enticing and I have loved what they have done with the characters. The protagonist, Natsuki Subaruis high school student sent to another world. He is a shut in NEET who presumably plays rpgs and has watched a few animes containing the boy sent to another world trope.(somewhat affecting his attitude and actions) The characters (9/10) What really ties this series together are the characters specifically the main character Natsuki Subaru.(Spoiler) Subaru while mostly powerless in this new world, cannot die. Whenever Subaru dies, he returns to a specific point in time. The conditions and limits of this power are mostly unexplained(Not going to give too much away there). Subaru's interactions with other characters are never the same in each time line because his death changes his perspective with each time. This allows us to see multiple sides of the same characters. Subaru's interactions with characters don't even necessarily improve with every reincarnation. Subaru's character development is not on a straight line. He is a realistic protagonist in that his actions frequently won't be liked by the viewer. There are other characters central to the plot but a lot of their emotional development spoils the plot. (end spoilers)

the Sound (10/10) The soundtrack almost always fits the mood of the show and it has a nice therapeutic feel.

The animation(7/10) Well, this is where the show falters a bit. The CGI backgrounds and background characters feel somewhat out of place sometimes but there can be some truly beautifully animated scenes despite this.(Don't worry even the bad parts aren't new Berzerk bad or even worse.... Food Fight..... (shudders))

The plot(10/10) (minor spoilers included) The show really does a great job with the plot for every alternate timeline it makes. There are some truly dark ways the story plays out depending on Subaru's actions or lack there of. There are usually emotional moments regardless of the timeline. (end minor spoilers)

Conclusion I really like this anime and it does a good job with its plot and characters. I would give it a 9/10 and would recommend watching it.
  • I liked it in the beginning, it was interesting the story keep developing. Season 2 has too much talking, events are too slow.i just wanted the season to end so I can get free of it to start watching something else.
  • Re:Zero is presented as an action drama, typical shonen with a shot of fantasy and adventure, but none of these positive aspects make this anime something acceptable. On the contrary, everything turns out to be ridiculous and forced. The women clichés, relationships and plot oblige some kind of attitudes, a style that create a space of slander, of something serious that wants to take control of everything. Between death and death, the dressed woman making delight. How's that not going to be regrettable?

Let's start with the absolute lack of credibility in the plot: you get to another world without knowing why, and you don't even ask yourself the reason why? This is just the plot, because the main character Subaru soon discovers that he's acquired a very particular power: he's capable of resetting his life every time he dies. With this power he will help Emilia and will try to defeat his different enemies. Just that here nothing is very clear.

So to say, that Re:Zero has a guide dropped at the floor, haphazard, incoherent, with characters that disappear and a plot that seems to have changed without the author knowing what to do. It is very marked in season 2, where the main replies to the most important questions remain unanswered.

Although maybe the worst is the plot itself and its outcome, because in the end everything is a witch mess (but how many are they? What do they want), of witches, of curse, or spells that have no sense (the sanctuary? Subaru and his power?), of invented books that work as gods ex machina, of spirits with misunderstood deal. A complete mess. Everything is a complete foul: the murderer is a robust young woman with heels; two girls that never take out their dressing gowns; the young claimants to the throne are young girls; an embarrassing harem in which all the girls fall in love with the main character.

Watch out with Rem, there's no stereotype more repulsive than this: the wlman that falls in love with anyone, and knowing that he doesn't love her back and will never love her. To be honest, the romance is not worthy, it's a mere fanservice. Subaru is in love with Emilia in a chapter because "she helped me" or something like that. What is more, Emilia is missing 90% of the times in the series.

The best is Puck as a character, who is lovely guy and has given us the best moments of Re:Zero: the end of chapter 15 of season 1, I recognise that it is gorgeous. Gore tendencies are of bad taste; I admit that I couldn't stand the Bunny immensity and I don't like to see women being tortured. You may be sadistic.

The assestment on the web I cannot understand neither share. To me, it's been a really wicked series.

This series is seriously amazing its pure perfection. We didn't even yet teach 40% of its full content and we still are in world building but it's seriously giving us every type of emotions w fear sadness depression anger with funny cute and wholesome moments Honestly i think its even more perfect than most issekai and non issekai series, and it's obviously the most superior series in its genre. I really hope it gets even more popular. If you haven't tried it yet i highly recommend you to do so you'll not regret it and it might change your view of the world positively just like it did to me
  • This show offers things ranging from adorable to absolutely horrific. Rarely does show bring tears to my eyes like this one has. I'm going to be so sad when it ends, but man I'm really loving the journey. In my opinion this is an absolute watch, you're definitely missing out if you haven't seen it.
