Disney's live-action remakes are inescapable these days, as beloved stories are continuously recycled and modified for new generations. Some of these films made much-needed changes to these stories, most notably ones that involved negative depictions of marginalized communities, but many revisions actually hurt the overall narrative.

There's no sign of these remakes stopping as Disney is moving towards developing films that are relatively recent, such as a live-action Moana. As these mostly uninspired cash grabs are released, fans anxiously anticipate what their favorite Disney classics will become. The endless barrage of remakes may never end, but perhaps this era of Disney would be a little more bearable if the updates made to these stories actually made sense and didn't feel like such a departure from the original animated film.

Disney’s live-action Snow White film is now in theaters, but it has been plagued with criticism and suspicion from film fans since its first trailer was released. So, in honor of the controversial film’s release, it may be useful to look at some of Disney’s most unnecessary live-action remakes. Not all of the entries on this list have been critically panned, but they have all suffered from their parent company’s efforts to further capitalize on well-established characters, which has stoked fatigue amongst moviegoers.

This isn’t always a bad thing, with Maleficent an especially radical reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, which audiences at the time embraced. In recent years, movies like Snow White have proven to be controversial, with many feeling their re-imaginings were more preoccupied with pushing agendas than providing entertainment.

Actor and producer Yara Shahidi has signed with Objectively Good Management (Ogm) for representation.

Shahidi is best known for starring in ABC’s “Black-ish” and its spinoff “Grown-ish.” Shahidi also executive produced the Freeform show, which wrapped up its six-season run in May, under the 7th Sun Productions banner she runs with her business partner and mother Keri Salter-Shahidi. 7th Sun Productions is signed to a multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature, which expanded in 2022 with the addition of a collaboration with Onyx Collective.

Apple TV+ has unviled the first trailer for upcoming supernatural series “Before,” described as “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller starring multi-award winning actor and comedian Billy Crystal.”

The Order, a crime thriller by Justin Kurzel, just premiered during the 81st Venice International Film Festival. Per Variety, the film was a major success, as it received a seven-minute standing ovation following its premiere. David Lowery is no stranger to taking big swings with his films. Even when he’s done more four-quadrant features, such as “Pete’s Dragon” and “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Lowery has taken risks. But it sounds as if his next film, “Mother Mary,” might be his biggest swing to date.

Speaking on the Last Video Store podcast, before jumping into the format of the pod, David Lowery was asked about “Mother Mary.” And according to the filmmaker, it’s a “weird, weird movie” and he’s not actually sure how it’s all going to turn out.

Over the weekend, director David Lowery teased the audience at the Melbourne International Film Festival with details about his much-anticipated film “Mother Mary.” The film, whose fourteen-month, multi-location production wrapped in Germany in July, explores the relationship between Anne Hathaway as a fictional pop star and Michaela Coel, the Emmy and BAFTA-winning star of “I Will Destroy You,” who plays a fashion designer engaged to design a dress for the star. Also starring are F.K.A. Twigs, Hunter Schafer, and Alba Baptista, with original music from Jack Antonoff and Charli Xcx.

Days after production closed, Hathaway described making “Mother Mary” as “one of the most extraordinary, transformative experiences I have ever had.” When asked about the feature, his eighth, Lowery sighed deeply and hesitantly described it as “a weird, weird film.”

Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Moana” is picking up steam, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirming via Instagram that production is set to begin in August. This announcement comes alongside the reveal of key cast members for the highly anticipated remake of the 2016 animated hit.

Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui, while newcomer Catherine Laga’aia has been cast as Moana. Laga’aia expressed her excitement about the role, stating, “I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

The cast is rounded out by John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. Notably, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original film, will not reprise her role but will serve as a producer alongside Johnson.

Exclusive: Ever Anderson, an up-and-coming actress known for roles in Disney+’s Peter Pan & Wendy and Marvel’s Black Widow, has entered into a new strategic partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, sources tell Deadline.

We’re told there’s no official first-look deal here, though the hope at the streaming giant is to build a relationship with the rising star, identifying and developing future projects for her in both film and television.

Anderson, the daughter of director Paul W.S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich, is coming off of her role as Wendy Darling in Disney+’s Peter Pan & Wendy, a live-action Peter Pan remake directed for the streamer by decorated filmmaker David Lowery. Released last April, the film had her sharing the screen with Jude Law, Alexander Molony and Yara Shahidi, among others.

2023 was not seen as a strong year for the Walt Disney Company. If there's one thing to be said for the Disney Studios Showcase at Destination D23 this year, it's that it gave those of us on the weekend news shift a nice quiet start to Sunday. 

First, to give some perspective, here's a quick recap of the headlines from last year's D23 Expo. Disney/PIxar’s Elemental was a sleeper hit at the summer box office, dismissed early on after a so-so opening weekend but then proving it had legs by racking up $480 million globally. As such, it stands among 2023’s Top 10-grossing films worldwide.

Yara Shahidi, the “Black-ish” star who recently starred as Tinker Bell in Disney’s live-action film “Peter Pan & Wendy,” will be honored with the Shining Star award at the 2023 Maui Film Festival.

The festival has revealed its full honoree and film slate for this year’s event, which is set to take place from June 28 to July 2 in Kahului.

Shahidi is known for starring as Zoey in ABC’s beloved “Black-ish” and is now the executive producer of Freeform’s spinoff series, “Grown-ish.” She soon will star in Amazon’s upcoming rom-com “Sitting in Bars With Cake,” for which she will also serve as EP, along with the upcoming action thriller “Ballerina Overdrive.”

In the recent past, Disney has been on a spree of producing live-action remakes of some of their most popular and beloved animations we have all come to love. From Beauty and the Beast to The Lion King, and more recent projects like the recently released The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan & Wendy, Disney has been bringing back memories and its just like old times. In that same vein, we are coming aboard our seaworthy vessels and sailing back to Polynesia as Disney had previously announced a live-action remake of its 2016 hit film Moana.

The Peter Pan & Wendy cast features a wide variety of actors, ranging from seasoned stars to young performers making their first-ever movie appearance. A live-action remake of Disney’s classic animated Peter Pan movie from 1953, Peter Pan & Wendy revolves around the titular duo’s adventure to the magical world of Neverland where they contend with a notorious pirate named Captain Hook. Peter Pan & Wendy is director David Lowery’s second Disney movie after Pete’s Dragon, one of the earliest and most critically acclaimed in the Mouse House’s ongoing series of live-action remakes of its classics.

Disney Animation is responsible for some of the most delicious villains to ever grace the silver screen. Who doesn't adore the back-stabbing, fratricidal Scar from "The Lion King" or the cackling Queen from "Snow White"? Classic Disney baddies aren't just fun to hate -- they're just fun. There's so much joy to be had, watching the regal Shere Khan suddenly go feral on Mowgli in "The Jungle Book" or Vincent Price's Professor Ratigan sing about his nefarious plans with unbridled glee in "The Great Mouse Detective" (arguably the film that was truly responsible for the Disney Renaissance).

By this point, you've undoubtedly gotten wind of us online grumps bemoaning the lack of dyed-in-the-wool, unsympathetic villains in Disney movies of late, be they animated features or live-action remakes. Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” is beginning its box office swim with $10.3 million in previews. It opens in 4,320 theaters on Friday.

Thursday’s preview haul is the seventh-highest ever for a G- or PG-rated movie. “The Little Mermaid” also picked up $850,000 from Wednesday early access screenings.

Starring singer and actor Halle Bailey as Ariel, the new movie is projected to open with $100 million this holiday weekend. With Memorial Day on Monday, its four-day total could land between $120 million and $125 million.

The two-time Oscar nominee is set to star as King Henry VIII in Karim Aïnouz’s “Firebrand” opposite Alicia Vikander, who will portray Catherine Parr, the last of Henry’s six wives. To physically portray Henry in his final years, Law sought the help of a perfumer to give himself a realistic — and seemingly awful — scent as the ailing king.

“I read several interesting accounts that — at this period — you could smell Henry three rooms away because his leg was rotting so badly and he hid it with rose oil,” Law said during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. “I just thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful.”

For the second straight weekend, “Scream VI” and Paramount+ topped Whip Media’s movie ranker, which looks at the most-streamed movies in the U.S. using viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.

You know that scene in “Back to the Future 2” where Marty McFly stumbles onto the theater showing “Jaws 19”? That might as well be the “Scream” franchise at this point, because it’s six flicks deep and showing no signs of slowing down.

“Scream VI” raked in $169 million at the box office earlier this year, a take that was nearly quintuple its estimated production budget. Since hitting Paramount+ on April 25, it has continued to attract viewers.

Peter Pan & Wendy recently set a new record for the worst audience score ever for a live-action remake of a Disney animated film.

Per Rotten Tomatoes, Peter Pan & Wendy, which began streaming on Disney+ on Apr. 28, currently has an audience score of 13 percent, which is a whopping 15 percent worse than what the live-action remake of Pinocchio received back in 2022. The only other Disney live-action remakes to receive an audience score of under 45 percent are the two Glenn Close-led 101 Dalmatians movies with the 1996 film receiving a score of 40 percent while the sequel, 102 Dalmatians, is a bit lower at 32 percent. As of April 2023, the top three audience scores for live-action Disney remakes are 2021's Cruella (97%), 2019's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (95%) and 2019's Aladdin (94%).

Yara Shadidi thought she was going to get to fly all over the place to bring Tinkerball to life in the new movie "Peter Pan & Wendy," streaming now on Disney+. "I thought I was going to be doing some crazy wire work," she tells Popsugar. That was not the case.

"It was the ultimate collaboration between me and the visual effects team," she explains. "If they were to ever release the behind the scenes footage, it'd be me on my tiptoes flying around this studio, pretending to fly."

Peter & Wendy premiered on Disney+ on Apr. 28, and its performance is dividing fans, to say the least. The film is a live-action remake of one of Disney’s most beloved classics, another one in the list of reboots that the company attempts to do with actors and actresses without much success. This is not to say that most live-action remakes have flopped, but Disney is having trouble finding the formula to bring its most iconic movies to the 21st century.

More conservative voices would argue that remaking the original animated films is a mistake, but that would be simplifying the issue. Some of these movies have performed better than others, and it’s not the same to remake a film from the 50s as one from the 90s.

Yara Shahidi will be honored with the Youth Empowerment Award during The Cameron Boyce Foundation’s The Cam for a Cause Gala this June in Los Angeles.

Shahidi, who currently stars in Grown-ish and recently appeared as Tinkerbell in Disney+’s Peter Pan & Wendy, will be celebrated for her activism surrounding Stem awareness, women’s rights, civil rights and her countless acts of kindness towards others, according to the foundation. She is slated to receive the first iteration of the award at the second annual gala on June 1.

The event, which was established last year by the late actor Cameron Boyce’s parents, raises funds and awareness for epilepsy. (Boyce died in 2019 at the age of 20 due to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy following a seizure.)
