Disney's live-action remakes are inescapable these days, as beloved stories are continuously recycled and modified for new generations. Some of these films made much-needed changes to these stories, most notably ones that involved negative depictions of marginalized communities, but many revisions actually hurt the overall narrative.
There's no sign of these remakes stopping as Disney is moving towards developing films that are relatively recent, such as a live-action Moana. As these mostly uninspired cash grabs are released, fans anxiously anticipate what their favorite Disney classics will become. The endless barrage of remakes may never end, but perhaps this era of Disney would be a little more bearable if the updates made to these stories actually made sense and didn't feel like such a departure from the original animated film.

Disney’s live-action Snow White film is now in theaters, but it has been plagued with criticism and suspicion from film fans since its first trailer was released. Star Rachel Zegler’s questionable press tour and the…interesting CGI are just two of the ways in which the film has become the topic of countless internet memes.
So, in honor of the controversial film’s release, it may be useful to look at some of Disney’s most unnecessary live-action remakes. Not all of the entries on this list have been critically panned, but they have all suffered from their parent company’s efforts to further capitalize on well-established characters, which has stoked fatigue amongst moviegoers.

Disney’s live-action remakes have been a very mixed bag, but for the most part, they’ve been tremendously successful at the box office. Many of them have been controversial, as Disney has often radically reworked stories to suit modern sensibilities, which could include more diverse (or accurate) representations of characters. However, some of their choices have been equally puzzling, with them sometimes watering down stories so much that they become nearly unrecognizable. This isn’t always a bad thing, with Maleficent an especially radical reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, which audiences at the time embraced. In recent years, movies like Snow White have proven to be controversial, with many feeling their re-imaginings were more preoccupied with pushing agendas than providing entertainment.
Whatever the case, it also can’t be denied that not all of their remakes have been bad. Many loved Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, while Cruella, a new take on 101 Dalmatians,...

Snow White has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a dismal score. The upcoming 2025 movie is a live-action remake of Disney's first feature-length animated movie, starring Rachel Zegler in the title role opposite Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The upcoming Snow White is the latest in a long-tradition of live-action remakes of Disney properties that includes titles such as 2023's The Little Mermaid, 2019's The Lion King and Aladdin, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch and Moana.
Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated an official Tomatometer score for the live-action remake of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, thoughts from 51 different critics have been tabulated to give the movie a firmly Rotten 45% score with an average rating of 5.4 out of 10. Lucasfilm has big plans for the Star Wars universe, with several new movies in development. In April 2023, three films were announced, each set in different eras of the saga. Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct these films, expanding the franchise in exciting new directions.
Meanwhile, Jon Favreau is set to direct The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for release in May 2026. With other projects from creators like Rian Johnson, also in the works, the future of Star Wars looks packed with adventure.
Considering how rarely we get updates on these projects, it’s hard to know exactly what stage of development they are in. New Jedi Order is experiencing delays and challenges as it continues to change writers. Meanwhile, several previously announced films remain uncertain, leaving us wondering if they are still in development at all.

Mother Mary gets a first-look image, showing Anne Hathaway's role as a glamorous pop star. Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the upcoming A24 movie chronicles the relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer, with Alba Baptista, Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Michaela Coel set to costar. Mother Mary marks Hathaway's follow-up to Prime Video's The Idea of You, a romantic comedy that was released earlier this year.
Vanity Fair now shares a behind-the-scenes image from Mother Mary, showing Hathaway in character wearing a golden leotard with an accompanying golden cloak and a golden tiara, of sorts. Though the image doesn't reveal much, it does seemingly feature Hathaway posing in some kind of backstage area at a theater. Check out the image below:

David Lowery is no stranger to taking big swings with his films. Even when he’s done more four-quadrant features, such as “Pete’s Dragon” and “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Lowery has taken risks. But it sounds as if his next film, “Mother Mary,” might be his biggest swing to date.
Speaking on the Last Video Store podcast, before jumping into the format of the pod, David Lowery was asked about “Mother Mary.” And according to the filmmaker, it’s a “weird, weird movie” and he’s not actually sure how it’s all going to turn out.

Over the weekend, director David Lowery teased the audience at the Melbourne International Film Festival with details about his much-anticipated film “Mother Mary.” The film, whose fourteen-month, multi-location production wrapped in Germany in July, explores the relationship between Anne Hathaway as a fictional pop star and Michaela Coel, the Emmy and BAFTA-winning star of “I Will Destroy You,” who plays a fashion designer engaged to design a dress for the star. Also starring are F.K.A. Twigs, Hunter Schafer, and Alba Baptista, with original music from Jack Antonoff and Charli Xcx.
Days after production closed, Hathaway described making “Mother Mary” as “one of the most extraordinary, transformative experiences I have ever had.” When asked about the feature, his eighth, Lowery sighed deeply and hesitantly described it as “a weird, weird film.”

Although Peter Pan is usually associated with Disney, the characters original source material contained some darker elements which were not included in the classic 1953 animated film. Peter Pan made a small appearance in a J.M. Barrie book titled The Little White Bird, before taking centre stage in his own play and novel. Peter Pans legacy remains positive, despite the dark aspects of the original story.
Peter Pan has been a beloved character for generations with over a hundred years of adaptations. From the 1924 silent film, Peter Pan, to Steven Spielberg's Hook, to Disney's 2023 Peter Pan & Wendy, people have flocked to their screens to watch the character's daring antics. For many, though, it is the original Disney animated film (that celebrated 70 years in February 2023) that was the introduction to the boy who refused to grow up.

2023 was not seen as a strong year for the Walt Disney Company. It was a year of underperformance as fans seemed to be demanding something fresh from the House of Mouse, leaving many marquee titles to come in well below expectations. Still, Walt Disney Pictures produced or co-produced 11 in-house movies last year, including reimaged classics like The Little Mermaid and a final outing for movie icon Indiana Jones.
Some of them were from the big-name franchises that everyone's heard of, while others dropped straight onto Disney+ without much fanfare. Many of these releases were underwhelming by most measures, but there is still a unique charm and polish to Disney movies that can make them a worthwhile watch.

Jim Gaffigan humorously jokes about his physical appearance for his role as Mr. Smee, claiming he gained weight, lost hair, and depigmented his skin. Gaffigan's trademark humor shines in his interview, where he sarcastically calls Smee "the best-looking sidekick" despite the character being intentionally grimy and unattractive. Gaffigan highlights the unique portrayal of the relationship between Smee and Captain Hook in Peter Pan & Wendy, comparing it to a parent-teenager dynamic where Smee is the parental figure.
Jim Gaffigan appears in Peter Pan & Wendy as Mr. Smee, Captain Hook's right-hand lackey, and according to Gaffigan, "the best-looking sidekick". Peter Pan & Wendy is the 2023 remake of Disney's 1953 animated feature film, Peter Pan, itself based on the 1904 play by J. M. Barrie. The film continues a long tradition of live-action Disney remakes and, while it may not reach the high echelons of remakes like The Jungle Book and Cinderella, it's still...

"Pinocchio" and "Peter Pan & Wendy" are Disney+ live-action remakes that deserve theatrical releases for their star-studded casts and brand recognition. "Lady & The Tramp" combines Disney's successful formula of live-action remakes, dog movies, and recognizable IP, making it a clear candidate for a theatrical release. "Hocus Pocus 2," "Disenchanted," and "Werewolf By Night" could benefit from theatrical re-releases to capitalize on their cult followings and tie-ins to beloved franchises like Halloween and the MCU.

The Peter Pan & Wendy cast features a wide variety of actors, ranging from seasoned stars to young performers making their first-ever movie appearance. A live-action remake of Disney’s classic animated Peter Pan movie from 1953, Peter Pan & Wendy revolves around the titular duo’s adventure to the magical world of Neverland where they contend with a notorious pirate named Captain Hook. Peter Pan & Wendy is director David Lowery’s second Disney movie after Pete’s Dragon, one of the earliest and most critically acclaimed in the Mouse House’s ongoing series of live-action remakes of its classics.

Disney Animation is responsible for some of the most delicious villains to ever grace the silver screen. Who doesn't adore the back-stabbing, fratricidal Scar from "The Lion King" or the cackling Queen from "Snow White"? Classic Disney baddies aren't just fun to hate -- they're just fun. There's so much joy to be had, watching the regal Shere Khan suddenly go feral on Mowgli in "The Jungle Book" or Vincent Price's Professor Ratigan sing about his nefarious plans with unbridled glee in "The Great Mouse Detective" (arguably the film that was truly responsible for the Disney Renaissance).
By this point, you've undoubtedly gotten wind of us online grumps bemoaning the lack of dyed-in-the-wool, unsympathetic villains in Disney movies of late, be they animated features or live-action remakes. It's not automatically a defect, mind you. "Encanto," for example, doesn't need a Big Bad to explore themes about generational trauma or...

Everything did not come up smelling like roses for Jude Law‘s latest role.
The two-time Oscar nominee is set to star as King Henry VIII in Karim Aïnouz’s “Firebrand” opposite Alicia Vikander, who will portray Catherine Parr, the last of Henry’s six wives. To physically portray Henry in his final years, Law sought the help of a perfumer to give himself a realistic — and seemingly awful — scent as the ailing king.
“I read several interesting accounts that — at this period — you could smell Henry three rooms away because his leg was rotting so badly and he hid it with rose oil,” Law said during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. “I just thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful.”

The filmmakers describe the movie as a "darkly comic tale of murder and survival, set around a group of eclectic characters who abandon civilization for the Galapagos. They are all searching for the answer to that ever-pressing question that plagues us all: what is the meaning of life.”

For the second straight weekend, “Scream VI” and Paramount+ topped Whip Media’s movie ranker, which looks at the most-streamed movies in the U.S. using viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
You know that scene in “Back to the Future 2” where Marty McFly stumbles onto the theater showing “Jaws 19”? That might as well be the “Scream” franchise at this point, because it’s six flicks deep and showing no signs of slowing down.
“Scream VI” raked in $169 million at the box office earlier this year, a take that was nearly quintuple its estimated production budget. Since hitting Paramount+ on April 25, it has continued to attract viewers.
Most-streamed movies, May 5-7, 2023, U.S. (Whip Media)
But what’s most interesting, perhaps, is who has been watching the latest “Scream” movie. For starters, the “Scream VI” streaming audience leans slightly towards women,...

Peter Pan & Wendy recently set a new record for the worst audience score ever for a live-action remake of a Disney animated film.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, Peter Pan & Wendy, which began streaming on Disney+ on Apr. 28, currently has an audience score of 13 percent, which is a whopping 15 percent worse than what the live-action remake of Pinocchio received back in 2022. The only other Disney live-action remakes to receive an audience score of under 45 percent are the two Glenn Close-led 101 Dalmatians movies with the 1996 film receiving a score of 40 percent while the sequel, 102 Dalmatians, is a bit lower at 32 percent. As of April 2023, the top three audience scores for live-action Disney remakes are 2021's Cruella (97%), 2019's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (95%) and 2019's Aladdin (94%).

Yara Shadidi thought she was going to get to fly all over the place to bring Tinkerball to life in the new movie "Peter Pan & Wendy," streaming now on Disney+. "I thought I was going to be doing some crazy wire work," she tells Popsugar. That was not the case.
"It was the ultimate collaboration between me and the visual effects team," she explains. "If they were to ever release the behind the scenes footage, it'd be me on my tiptoes flying around this studio, pretending to fly."
So when Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson, who play Peter and Wendy, respectively, filmed scenes "with Tinkerbell," they had to stretch their imagination. "We just had a a glowing ball," Molony tells Popsugar.
Anderson explains, "It was a blue stick so that you could edit it out and a tiny little light bulb on the tip. So that was how we...

Peter & Wendy premiered on Disney+ on Apr. 28, and its performance is dividing fans, to say the least. The film is a live-action remake of one of Disney’s most beloved classics, another one in the list of reboots that the company attempts to do with actors and actresses without much success. This is not to say that most live-action remakes have flopped, but Disney is having trouble finding the formula to bring its most iconic movies to the 21st century.
More conservative voices would argue that remaking the original animated films is a mistake, but that would be simplifying the issue. Some of these movies have performed better than others, and it’s not the same to remake a film from the 50s as one from the 90s.
So, did Peter Pan & Wendy change the source material too much or too little? Aside from any commercial cutbacks or sudden decisions that affect the result,...

Yara Shahidi will be honored with the Youth Empowerment Award during The Cameron Boyce Foundation’s The Cam for a Cause Gala this June in Los Angeles.
Shahidi, who currently stars in Grown-ish and recently appeared as Tinkerbell in Disney+’s Peter Pan & Wendy, will be celebrated for her activism surrounding Stem awareness, women’s rights, civil rights and her countless acts of kindness towards others, according to the foundation. She is slated to receive the first iteration of the award at the second annual gala on June 1.
The event, which was established last year by the late actor Cameron Boyce’s parents, raises funds and awareness for epilepsy. (Boyce died in 2019 at the age of 20 due to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy following a seizure.)
