If you haven’t heard of the Telugu-language horror show Mansion 24, then check out our rant, sorry, review to learn more about it. On the other hand, if you’re left confused or just plain disappointed by the end, then we’ll try and explain some things to make it a little more digestible. The series has six episodes lasting 30 minutes each, so it’s bingeable in half a day. Although each episode tells a different story, like an anthology, there’s one central plotline that is meant to continue throughout the series. We’re introduced to Amrutha, the daughter of esteemed archaeologist and traitor Kalidas, who is believed to have escaped with an important finding. Amrutha is on the hunt to find out the truth about her father, and on the way, she meets an interesting man—the security guard of the abandoned “mansion.” To get to the...

The Hateful Straights: Mills Finds Bigots in the Backwoods in Exploitation Effort
One of the many silver linings of genre filmmaking is the powerful ability of subtext. However, there’s a formidable power in siphoning the subtext to the foreground in compelling ways, like The Stepford Wives (1975) or Get Out (2017), which formulate their own niche of persuasively terrifying social issue horror. However, there’s also a fine line between eloquence and exploitation, and the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Pat Mills, The Retreat, gravitates towards the latter. It’s a far cry from Mills’ previous output, who heretofore reveled in showcasing teen pariahs embracing their freak flags in intriguing ways, such as his 2014 standalone debut Guidance (read review) and 2017’s Don’t Talk to Irene (2017).…...

Updated: Viacom is making significant cuts at Awesomeness, disclosing plans to lay off nearly 100 employees — or around half of the digital-media company it acquired last month from NBCUniversal, Verizon and Hearst.
In addition, as Viacom previously announced would happen, former Awesomeness CEO Jordan Levin has left the company.
While sources previously indicated Awesomeness was laying off more than 30 staffers this week, the cutbacks are much deeper than that. According to a notice filed with California’s Employment Development Department, Awesomeness will terminate 50 employees on Oct. 15; 33 who will be let go shortly after Oct. 15; and 15 who will lose their employment on Dec. 31.
Santa Monica-based Awesomeness filed the notice Aug. 16 with the agency under the requirements of the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (Warn) Act, which requires at least 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs. Awesomeness’ filing of the Warn notice was previously reported by Deadline.

Pence will portray Dennis, the oldest tenant at The Coterie, with a mild case of arrested development, and an aspiring musician.
In addition to Mitchell and Ramirez, they join series regulars Tommy Martinez, Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola and Roger Bart, and Emma Hunton and Ken Kirby who recur.

The Canadian indie “Don’t Talk to Irene” shows it’s possible to find a movie’s first 20 minutes immensely dislikable and its last 20 minutes assuredly winning; that it’s possible to tap your feet and roll your eyes at the same time as you recognize how you’re being played. Somewhere in between introducing, in a dumpster, the titular misfit teenage girl (newcomer Michelle McLeod), and sending her into the closing credits with a few Hughes-ian moments of justifiable pride, writer-director Pat Mills (“Guidance”) manages to overcome a weakness for twee snark and easy humiliation comedy to find a suitably amusing, even...

“The Post” is a period piece, but its production happened at warp speed. Steven Spielberg began shooting in White Plains, New York, on May 1, 2017; 12 months earlier, he had no intention of directing a film and its rookie screenwriter, Liz Hannah, hadn’t written a word of it. This week, “The Post” was named Best Film by the National Board of Review, which also gave Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks top acting honors. Now, Hannah and co-writer Josh Singer have a formidable chance of securing an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Hannah didn’t always aspire to be a screenwriter. Following undergraduate studies at the Pratt Institute and an internship on the film “Reign Over Me,” she was admitted to the AFI Conservatory, in the producing discipline. Then she spent five years in development — long enough to realize it wasn’t what she wanted.

Rose began her YouTube channel in 2009 with hair and make-up videos, counseling her peers on curing acne and how to grow hair more quickly. Over the past seven years, her videos have quickly evolved from the ubiquitous talking head tutorial video to more stylized fare; with editing, music choices, and feminist politics, Rose’s channel stands out in a sea of clickbait titles and the viral challenge of the moment.
