"Badger Lane" is a British 10-minute live action short film from 2016, so this one here is moving closer to its 5th anniversary. For director Shay Collins, it was her first filmmaking credit as the person in charge and for writer Dominique Scoles, it is even her only one to this day. So experience is not a factor here when it comes to some key players and I think the pretty young cast also did not act in too much before this one we have here. Now this is not by definition a problem as talent can still be there, even in the lack of experience, but I would not say this is the case here either. Clearly the film was taking the route of the famous "The Blair Witch Project" when we have a gang of youngsters filming a documentary at an abandoned brick factory somewhere in England and it all goes horribly wrong, actually way more than I expected even for such a brief film. But the film itself went fairly wrong too. The relationships and interactions between the characters early on are not too interesting and as it is almost impossible to understand what is going on in terms of horror and drama in the second half, things are not getting any better there. It shows that it is quite a challenge to come up with a decent film about people filming themselves while running into tragedy. The main reason why this film is still seen nowadays is the inclusion of actress Emma Mackey, who is enjoying a gigantic career boost right now with her role in a pretty successful new television show and in addition to that, it seems she will even act as the lead ne upcoming movies now with her co-lead(s) being truly experienced actors. But as I said in the title of my review: Her inclusion here is by no means a guarantee for this film to succeed quality-wise. It doesn't. Besides, Mackey is barely in it anyway. I personally give this film a thumbs-down and I believe that almost everybody involved with this one, especially the crew (you can't really blame the actors, their material was so weak), needs to step things up if they want a long (let alone successful) career in the industry. Embarrassing to see this one even won (at least) one awards. I say skip it because the only question here was for me if it is failure territory or just a weak film. I went with the latter, but I think even genre fans won't really enjoy the watch here. Thumbs down.
