- Hal Dockins: I mean, Jerry's a... a dream client. He's got a great narrative. He's a war hero. A decorated war hero. He served in World War II. He was, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross... for service for his country.
- Ruben Soames: [looking at an empty field] You know what this right here is? What it is, is a cemetery. Though you wouldn't ever know it, from looking at it, on account of the fact they're no headstones. But that's because this is a different kind of cemetery. An old slave burial ground. And everybody knows slaves didn't have no money of their own to ever bury their loved ones with headstones. All throughout the south, you see big empty fields just like this one. And though you'd never know it to look, our entire history, the history of black people in the south, of our slave ancestors, is buried everywhere out here. Deep underground, pretty much everywhere you look, that's where our history is, in all these vast empty fields. In some places, they even put up all these statues, you know like all these confederate monuments and statues you see all around here, a lot of them were put up right on top of slave burial grounds. Almost like taking one history and putting it right on top of another. Taking one man's legacy, and putting it on top of another, 'til one day the other gets pushed down so deep, buried so deep... can't no one ever find it no more.
- Jeremiah O'Keefe: Is this the first time you ever apologized to somebody like that?
- Willie Gary: [grunts] Be honest with you, my wife... uh, she helped me with the phrasing.
- Jeremiah O'Keefe: Uh-huh. Well, she did a very nice job. I want you to thank her for me.
- Willie Gary: How do you feel about working with black folk?
- Mike Allred: Man to man?
- Willie Gary: Is there any other way?
- Mike Allred: No sir. You want an honest answer.
- Willie Gary: I need that.
- Mike Allred: All right. Well, if you want an honest answer... truth be told, I suppose I'm a little prejudiced.
- Willie Gary: Mmm, okay.
- Mike Allred: I'm not saying I'm proud of it or anything.
- Willie Gary: I appreciate your honesty.
- Mike Allred: In fact, I've been working real hard on trying to overcome it.
