Set over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.
It was chosen by both the National Board of Review and American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year. Dafoe earned Best Supporting Actor nominations at the Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, and Academy Awards.
You know why this is my favorite tree?
Moonee: 'Cause it's tipped over, and it's still growing.
Jancey and Moonee run off to Walt Disney World at the end of the film; yet the circumstances are extremely unlikely. They would have to run about 5 miles, down major highways and across interstates, to get to a Disney hotel or Downtown Disney, then use the bus system to get to the Magic Kingdom, then sneak inside somehow without paying. The ending is far too impractical, if nothing else, to be taken literally.
