In 1980s Italy, a romance blossoms between a seventeen year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.
Director Luca Guadagnino told Billboard's Pop Shop Podcast that he and his team of filmmakers researched which songs would have been contemporary radio hits during the summer of 1983 in Italy and the summers before, and they used that to choose a number of the songs for the soundtrack. They also considered which time of day the songs would have been played, from the radio to the discotheque.

Continuity error after Elio grabs Oliver's crotch. As shot from the front, Oliver removes Elio's hand with his left hand. Cut to the immediate continuing shot from the rear but Oliver now has Elio's hand in his right hand as he sets Elio's hand back on Elio's knee.
The sound of the fire crackling in the fireplace continues after the last image of Elio goes black and the final notes of Sufjan Stevens's "Visions of Gideon" fade out.
