In 1980s Italy, a romance blossoms between a seventeen year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.
In the book, Elio is 17 years old and Oliver is 24. Timothée Chalamet was 20 years old when the film was shot, while Armie Hammer was 29. The film is set in Italy, and the age of consent in the country is 14.

In one scene just outside the Perlman's house, it is possible to see three cans of Illy coffee; in 1983, the design of the cans was different: shorter and larger. On top of that, the Illy logo displayed on the cans on display was created by James Rosenquist only in 1996.
Although the movie has a full opening credits sequence, the title of the film is not shown on screen until the end credits begin.
