  • Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the "2016 Billboard Music Awards" and the title is pretty self-explanatory I guess. This is next to the Grammys the biggest music award show of the year and this one here in particular is the 2016 edition. But this description is only true in reality as, just like the Grammys, eventually it had very little to do with awards (presentations), but it was basically a concert show overall. This is a core issue that sinks the entire event. The teacher at school would say they flew off on a tangent and missed the point. The show started with a Britney best-of, in the middle we have the world premiere of a new Adele song and the show ends with a tribute to Prince. The latter would have been tolerable had it felt in any way really about Prince, but it was all about Madonna and eventually Stevie Wonder too instead. But there are other problems here too. A mediocre year and song by Adele is enough for her to dominate the awards, which says it all basically about the level of the music industry right now talent-wise. And then there were those cringeworthy moments about everybody calling everybody their friends and so on. One reference similar to that is when Ke$ha was announced that one of her idols is Bob Dylan, but well after how she butchered the wonderful wonderful "It ain't me Babe" I would not be surprised if Dylan would not want to get near Ke$ha ever again. What could have been the greatest moment of the night became the worst in fact. Another thing that sucked was the shameless promotion on many occasions. One example would be the film promo by Mila Kunis and 2 other actresses and I wonder how much the production company paid the show organizers for that. And at the very end, you also hear a voice telling us about the next Dancing with the Stars and Bachelorette shenanigans as if it wasn't bad enough already that they are still trying to sell us these formats as quality television after all these years, especially Bachelorette. So yes, it is incredibly difficult to find something positive here about this show. Ludicrous' joke about his co-host's ring wasn't too bad actually and it was one of the reasons why he wasn't as horrible as Ciara, not that this means in any way he was good. And finally, the winners were a mess too. I already talked about the Adele mediocrity, but if Beaver and Rihanna are stealing awards and guys like One Direction and The Weeknd are cruising, then that speaks for itself. I may have given this a better rating if they had kept it at 100 minutes, preferably 80-90, instead of almost 130, but the way this "award show" was stuffed with music performances, it's a major no-go. One can only hope they find their path back to righteousness in the coming years, even if my hopes aren't exactly high given what a huge mess this was. Keep your distance.
