The last time we saw Luke Kirby on our screens, he was admittedly in not great shape, playing Lenny Bruce on the downward slope of his career in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Luckily, Kirby is now officially a member of the Palladino-verse — and the husband-and-wife creative team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino centered him in their new ballet dramedy Étoile, which debuted last month on Prime Video. Kirby stars as Jack MacMillan, the head of a New York ballet company who engages in a talent swap with a Paris troupe in a bid to revive interest in both. Naturally, hilarity, romance and plenty of dance ensue.
“I'm really happy with how people are responding to the dynamism of the story, the kinetic energy of it, how different it is from our last endeavor,” Kirby tells Gold Derby. “And I think the biggest thing is just people saying the...

Cutting together a ballet series shot across two countries, in multiple languages, with a cast in the dozens, Étoile was never going to be easy.
For editor Zana Bochar, as well as her father, supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Ron Bochar — both of whom worked on the creators’ previous series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — the challenge began with scope: “It’s one thing to have a show shot in Paris, as well as in New York, with very different recording techniques in both places,” says Ron, in conversation with Zana and dialogue editor Sara Stern at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “But it was also just the scope of the amount of dancers, the amount of people in the show. It was more than I ever thought possible.”

For the below-the-line team of Prime Video’s ballet series Étoile, most of whom had worked with creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino on their prior hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, creating the show was an undertaking shaped by both creative triumphs and major challenges.
From its earliest stages, the production navigated a landscape shaped by disruption — with the dual strikes of 2023 making for an unusual shooting schedule, and preparations for the 2024 Olympics complicating location shooting for the show, which moves between Paris and New York City.
“There were whole streets where the sidewalks were fenced off,” recalled cinematographer M. David Mullen of shooting in Paris, “and scaffolding in front of every monument.” Alongside Mullen and other members of the team at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, production designer Bill Groom echoed the strain: “If we couldn’t shoot everything on location in Paris, we should be fired.

Cinematographer M. David Mullen knows better than most what it’s like to make a show with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. Mullen worked on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with the Paladinos, winning three Emmy Awards for his acclaimed work on the Prime Video series.
Now, he’s back with the Palladinos for their new Prime Video series, Étoile, a passion project for the showrunning duo set in professional ballet.
“We always start with the broad strokes in portraying the lives of dancers in the American Ballet Theater setting and the Paris Ballet Theater setting,” Mullen tells Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel. “How much realism in terms of production design, lighting, and everything do we go for in terms of documentary realism because this is a real world, versus how stylized we make it since it’s a world about theater, dance, and music?...

Legislators think it’s getting too hard for audiences to watch games with the continued fragmentation of sports rights.
Tonight’s NBA playoff game is on Max, but what about tomorrow night? Is the opening NFL game of the season exclusive to Peacock or Prime Video? Increasingly, sports fans are being forced to ask these questions, as streaming services get more and more access to sports rights that were once exclusively available on linear TV. League executives from across the sports world were called in front of Congress this week to discuss the growing fragmentation of their rights, and senators made it clear that they were keeping an eye on the issue of fan access.
Key Details: What about the fans?: Sen. Ted Cruz pointed out that fans should get something in return for the special treatment sports leagues get. Lock it up: Sen. Bernie Moreno advised leagues to...

“I was 4 and handed a tutu — that’s the gateway drug!”
That’s how Amy Sherman-Palladino explained her introduction to the world of ballet, which she celebrates in her new Prime Video comedy series, Étoile, cocreated with her husband, Daniel Palladino.
“I trained as a dancer all the way until becoming a writer. I do think that if you love something like dancing, it gets inside of you. It affects everything about you. And if you love it, it never quite leaves you.”
The creator-writer-directors shared insights into their creative process alongside their stars at Tuesday night’s FYC event for their Prime Video comedy, alongside stars Luke Kirby (who plays Jack), Gideon Glick (Tobias), Ivan du Pontavice (Gabin), David Alvarez (Gael), Yanic Truesdale (Raphael), Simon Callow (Crispin Shamblee), and Tais Vinolo (Mishi).

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino have embarked on their second foray into the world of ballet with their latest series, Prime Video’s Étoile.
After previously working for one season on the 2012 drama Bunheads, Sherman-Palladino says her desire to tell another ballet-centric story was fueled by one thing: “vengeance.”
She’s joking, sort of.
“I wasn’t done, and I figured, let’s go back,” she said at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “The first time, it was more about coming of age, and then 10 years later, I assume they’ve all come of age. We thought, how fun it would be to go backstage into if they become professional ballerinas?”

Prime Video’s best shows prove the platform has quietly built a powerhouse lineup.
When people talk about the best TV on streaming, Prime Video usually isn’t the first name that comes up… and fair enough. It didn’t start with a giant library or a huge brand identity. Over time, Prime Video has worked hard to build up a seriously impressive reputation for the original series. Quietly, show by show, it’s pulled together a lineup that’s not just good — it’s packed with award winners, cult favorites, and cultural juggernauts that actually made an impact. Once you zoom out and take a look at the full slate from the past few years, you realize it’s got way more to offer than you might expect. So if you’re wondering where to start, here’s my personal list of the top 10 all-time TV shows on Prime Video.

A decades-long star is heading from the courtroom to the Cold War. Law & Orderstar Tony Goldwynhas been cast in Walden Media and Weed Road Pictures' upcoming spy thriller filmBillion Dollar Spy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actor has been tapped for the project alongside two other big names: Rufus Sewell and Justin Theroux. All three of them will join the previously announced Russell Crowe, who will star in the film. Fans won't have to wait long, either, as it was also announced that filming on the project has begun.
The film will tell the true story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet citizen who became disillusioned with his country and decided to become a CIA asset. Tolkachev risked his life to pass thousands of pages of top-secret intelligence to the United States. A portrait of Tolkachev, with spy camera in hand, still hangs in the CIA's Langley, Virginia, headquarters. His...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Étoile Season 1.] When it comes to frenetic television, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have certainly cornered the market between Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And with their latest venture, Étoile, the duo captures the intense world of ballet from two perspectives: New York City and Paris. They’ve also brought a familiar face along for their next ride. The series follows as the ballet companies from both cities swap choreographers and dancers to refresh interest in ticket sales and revitalize the overall interest and preservation of the performance art. This move is juxtaposed with the reality that much of the funding for this stunt comes from businessman Crispin Shamblee (Simon Callow), who made his profits off of weapons manufacturing and pollution-causing ventures. This is a particularly hard pill for Parisian ballerina Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge) — who is a climate change activist when she’s not twirling across the...

Étoile, Prime video’s new ballet dramedy is — like the meaning of its French title — full of star power. Sure, the creators have won Emmys. The actors have, too. But the dancers are what’s center stage, and for good reason.
Étoile’s end credits might as well be a list of the ballet world’s most elite: an A-list lineup of names from New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Boston Ballet, the Paris Opera and more.
“What I really love is the class, the artful choices,” Robbie Fairchild, a former principal dancer with New York City Ballet and now freelance artist, tells The Hollywood Reporter of the series. Fairchild plays Larry in Étoile — you can spot him rehearsing a duet by Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick) in episode one.
Étoile, from Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Dan Palladino of Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (and Bunheads!

According to a new survey from Hub Research, sports fans seek out games on streaming services more than they do on linear channels.
The evolution of sports on streaming has come a long way in the past decade. It’s been a long road from the tentative days when the MLB streamed games on Facebook as a novelty; in 2025, ESPN will launch a streaming service that allows viewers to watch every event they can see on its linear channels, with no need for a pay-tv subscription. A new survey from Hub quantifies just how far streamers have come in offering sports, and shows that network TV is no longer the primary source for live sports viewership; streaming has taken that crown at last.
Key Details: SVOD revolution: Subscription streamers are used more than any other source when viewers want to see a live sports event. First stop: Fans use streamers...

Amy Sherman-Palladino has always wanted to make television about dance.
The “Gilmore Girls” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator’s latest, “Étoile,” follows two prestigious dance companies in New York and Paris who decide to swap their top talent in an attempt to shake things up and bring more eyes to the arts. Back in 2012, just a few years off “Gilmore Girls,” Sherman-Palladino helmed a season of “Bunheads,” starring Sutton Foster as a former Vegas showgirl who ends up working at a small-town ballet school.
But neither series clicks like the creator’s other work — and the answer may be in the subject matter.
The performing arts — music, dance, theatre — have always been linked to television and film, but challenging to put on screen and make accessible to Hollywood viewers. This often manifests with middling movie musicals, and on the TV side with shows like “Smash,” (a cult favorite now on Broadway) “Mozart in the Jungle,...

Etoile has just premiered on Prime Video, but is there going to be a second season for the ballet dramedy?
Prime Video may have a lot of big-budget shows like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, they also have space for some smaller shows and still get top Hollywood talent involved with them.
That now includes Etoile, which premiered on Prime Video on April 24, 2025. It comes from Amy Sherman-Palladino, whose last Prime Video series was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The acclaimed comedy was an awards darling with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG wins for its cast and Sherman-Palladino herself.
Etoile is her follow-up, focusing on a New York ballet company and its counterpart in Paris. Both are facing troubles of dwindling crowds and a lack of promising dancers and both might close. In desperation, the directors (Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg...

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are no stranger to reviving their favorites in their projects. The “Gilmore Girls” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators lean on talent they trust and have built relationships with in their new series “Étoile.
Their new Prime Video comedy series “Étoile” is no exception. “Maisel” standout Luke Kirby stars as the head of the New York City’s premiere ballet company, who faces a tough decision in order to save the storied institution. And “Gilmore Girls” favorite Yanic Truesdale returns as a new Frenchman
“It’s only because we feel like we made the right choice before,” Daniel Palladino told TheWrap of bringing back talent. “If we feel this actor would work well with this character in this new thing, we just want to hire him back.”
“They’re also not surprised when they get a huge script,” Amy Sherman-Palladino joked. “Other people feel terrified and start to sob.

If you miss The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video has a brand new show from the same creator that's a must-watch!
Prime Video has been known for some big shows, although not as much of an awards darling as other streamers. A major exception was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the writer/producer behind the beloved The WB/The CW dramedy Gilmore Girls, the series focused on Midge Maisel, a 1950s housewife who, after discovering her husband’s cheating, embarks on a career as a stand-up comic.
The show was a huge success not just with audiences but critics as well. It’s the most honored Prime Video original show with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award wins for stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Sherman-Palladino herself earned Emmys for Best Comedy Series and her writing.

After charming audiences as New York City comedian Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Luke Kirby returns this week as a new New York star: Jack McMillan, director of the (fictional) Metropolitan Ballet Theater.
Kirby’s protagonist leads Étoile, Prime Video’s ballet dramedy from Maisel co-creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino (the wife-husband team also made Gilmore Girls and Bunheads). In a last-ditch attempt to spark ticket sales, Jack agrees to trade his company’s biggest stars with France’s (also fictional) Le Ballet National, helmed by Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Genevieve Lavigne.
Étoile’s eight episodes are stuffed with whimsical characters, sharp humor and an impressive cast of real dancers and great ballet. Through it all, Jack and Genvieve’s fight to save their beloved art form becomes the show’s most central duet.
Below, Kirby talks to The Hollywood Reporter about returning to a Palladino set, stepping...

"He’s a strange little man.”
That’s how Gideon Glick described Seymour, his character in Little Shop of Horrors, to The New York Times back in 2020, but the same could be said of Tobias, the role he plays in Étoile, the latest series from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, which debuts Thursday on Prime Video. Or for that matter Alfie, his befuddled magician on the Palladinos’ previous hit, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

There’s no denying the love for dance that flows throughout Étoile (French for “star”), a passion project for Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the dynamic duo of writing-directing-producing auteurs who delighted us for years with the hyperverbal screwball joys of Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. In their new series for Prime Video, which in an ill-advised move is dropping all eight episodes at once for a too-much-is-too-much binge, they return to the world of ballet, the setting for their gone-too-soon 2012-13 show Bunheads, a charmingly modest heartwarmer set at a small-town ballet school. In Étoile, everything is on a much grander scale, with colorfully neurotic and excessively eccentric characters operating — and talking, babbling, on occasion speechifying — in the high-profile cultural capitals of New York City and Paris. When the spotlight turns on the tortured, temperamental artists in rehearsal or performance, it’s all very dazzling. Unfortunately, those moments can be fleeting,...

Light years away from Stars Hollow and the comedy clubs of 1950s New York City, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s latest dramedy, “Étoile,” delves into the milieu of professional ballet. The series spotlights New York City’s Metropolitan Ballet Theatre, run by executive director Jack McMillan (Luke Kirby), and Paris’ Le Ballet National, managed by interim director Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Amid sluggish ticket sales, a post-covid dancer exodus and a dwindling audience, Jack and Geneviève hatch an ambitious plan to swap their top performers for one year to bring more visibility to both companies. While the dancing is stunning, and some characters have a few amusing traits, “Étoile” is an exhausting show centering a slew of insufferable people obsessed with hearing themselves speak.
“Étoile,” which refers to a company’s principal dancer, opens as a young girl, SuSu Li (Lamay Zhang), dances alone in the darkened practice room at the Metropolitan Ballet.

Since “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” ended its 22-time Emmy-winning run in 2023, TV series have been awfully short on temperamental artists, fast-talking New Yorkers and whip-smart female characters. The new Prime Video series “Étoile” boasts all of those things — plus pouty Parisians, complex choreography and the most leg warmers you’ve seen since the 1980s.
For their much-anticipated follow-up to “Maisel,” husband-wife writing-producing team Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino chose to leap into the rarified world of classical dance, spotlighting two fictional companies, the Metropolitan Ballet Theater in New York and Le Ballet National in Paris. Their anxious but charismatic leaders — Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, respectively — agree to a single-year foreign-exchange, swapping their top artists — dancers, choreographers, conductors — in order to boost ticket sales and revitalize interest in a centuries-old art form. “A lot of our dancers have abandoned toe shoes for TikTok, the dressing rooms are filled with screaming...

Prime Video’s latest dramedy, Étoile—a.k.a. Bunheads for adults—comes from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the creative geniuses behind Gilmore Girls and the Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. They are a brilliant writing team, able to adapt their signature style to almost any world they build, always centered around truly unique characters.
With Étoile, their immense talent is once again on display. The series features their hallmark fast-paced dialogue, richly layered characters—particularly the women—a mastery of tone, and a distinctive approach to world-building. It all folds into a narrative style so quirky and specific, it nearly creates a deliberate clash between tone, substance, and setting—one that only they could pull off.
The result is dialogue that is sharp, stinging, and delivered with humorous precision from the excellent cast.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has the Emmys and The WB’s Gilmore Girls has the two decades of snowballing affection, but if I’m feeling contrary — and I’m usually feeling contrary — I’ll say that my favorite Amy Sherman-Palladino show is Bunheads.
Because Bunheads only consists of 18 episodes, it’s all potential. It started bumpy, found its voice completely and then ABC Family canceled it, so I can eternally believe it never would have been marred by Sherman-Palladino’s inevitable flirtations with tweeness or her insatiable appetite for ramming her characters into narrative brick walls. It’s pure, delightful, perfectly cast Sherman-Palladino goodness.
Bunheads was also a show about potential. Its key characters were budding ballet dancers, which allowed the show to avoid the challenges of depicting excellence — pressures that Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino struggled with when it came to Midge Maisel and her comedy — and concentrate,...

Étoile, an eight-episode ballet dramedy from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino (creators of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), has a major pointe to prove about the importance of the art of dance. When tickets aren’t selling like they used to, two ballet companies — set in New York and Paris — make a plan to swap talent to revitalize their programs. Stepping into first position with a major ask, tired New York director Jack bargains with Parisian Geneviève (Charlotte Gainsbourg) for her star dancer, the brash Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge). Nobody gets along, and no one is satisfied — at first. But Jack and Cheyenne, who share a complicated history, make interesting sparring partners. “They poke at each other,” Kirby tells us of their verbal Pas de Deux. “Cheyenne has a great degree of armor. She moves through the world as though everything is her destiny. But she’s also just ...

A new survey from Hub Research shows the success that Prime Video’s AI-assisted broadcasts of ‘Thursday Night Football’ games has had among fans.
With cable and broadcast channels losing viewers every day, major sports leagues are thinking about the next way to distribute their games. Consider the NFL; a league once wary of streaming now has deals with Netflix and Prime Video, and has also streamed games on ESPN+, Paramount+, and Peacock. As viewers follow sports to streaming, a new survey from Hub Research shows that streamers should strongly consider incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the viewing experience.
Key Details: In its Prime: Seventy percent of fans who saw Amazon’s Prime Vision on “Tnf” were positive about its features. I’m a fan: A majority of sports fans say they’re excited for more sports content to become available on streaming. A lesson for ESPN?: ESPN is...

After beginning her acting career with a small role in the Michael Bay-produced film The Unborn, she gained critical success with her role in Netflix’s original series House of Cards and gained mainstream success after her amazing leading role in Prime Video’s The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel. She is currently starring in James Hawes‘s vigilante spy thriller film The Amateur opposite Rami Malek, and just like me, everyone is awaiting her role of Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming superhero film Superman. The swanky uptown pad that was once home to Midge Maisel and her parents is officially on the market — but it won’t come cheap!
The property is being listed for the first time in over 30 years, with a bonus of being part of TV and film history. The home was featured in Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for five seasons, and was also used for Woody Allen’s 1997 film Deconstructing Harry.

“31 Candles,” a romantic comedy from “Exmas” director Jonah Feingold, has been acquired by Level 33 Entertainment.
The film will hit theaters in North America later this year. Level 33 will also represent “31 Candles” for international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
“31 Candles” follows a 30-year-old New Yorker named Leo Kadner (Feingold), who spontaneously plans his long-overdue Bar Mitzvah after running into his former summer camp crush, Eva Shapiro (newcomer Sarah Coffey). Jackie Sandler, Dale Moss (“The Bachelorette”), comedian Jared Freid, Catherine Cohen (“Only Murders In The Building”), Lori Tan Chinn (“A Man on the Inside”), Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Larry Owens (“Abbott Elementary”) round out the cast.
“This is all a Bar Mitzvah boy could ever want — a chance to share a personal, funny, Jewish love story with the world,” Feingold said. “I hope audiences support our completely independent film.”
Feingold also wrote and directed “31 Candles,” which is his fifth feature film.
