Yet again a great show that didn't get picked up! The show is charming, witty, sarcastically funny and entertaining as hell! I hope somebody with some influence watches it feels the same way and decides to make a new season!

smbclement19 December 2017WOW the reviews on here are harsh to say the least....I guess a lot of these people don't watch enough bad TV to know the difference been something decent and inventive to real garbage. I am not a huge Russell Peters fan but I did like him as a cop in this series, it's got drama. comedy, action and an interesting story line concept - and I love that it takes place in Canada and India. Very cool!!! Can't wait for the continuation of what happens next...stay tuned I guess!

I had never heard of Russell Peters before, so I neither had any bias against nor expectations of the show. I found the first season to be entertaining and engaging. A light-hearted cop show, well written and well paced. If this rates 1 star there are an awful lot of shows out there that deserve black holes.

newatt-27 December 2017I am not a Russell Peters fan and never will be - but for some reason I enjoy the Seinfeld-style wooden acting, the evocative music and scenery, the too-gorgeous-for-Russell-Peters actress and the mostly patchy dialogue that doesn't quite settle on a genre. I'm right up to date watching it, which argues to me that I must be having a good time doing so, although I cannot say precisely why.

miaalike23 February 2021Not sure about the cultural implications, if any. But for an outsider the series was interesting and cosy detective series - like. Seen it a while ago, so details may be less clear. An indian detective, as the title says, goes back to his father and gets in the middle of some events that need investigating, with leads that take him to a powerful businessman, if I remember correctly. The main character has to adjust to being targeted by corrupt villains, and to the street ways, which are different from what he knows about doing his job. He is naive here and there, due to the rough environment. The father is intriguing and funny, the love interest left me waiting for the second season, yet to come to this date. The lead actor comes from standup and has an attractive, particular style. A series to try if you like lighter, atmospheric detective shows. And comedy.

callladd12 July 2020We can't imagine why there are so many harshly negative reviews of this show. It's easily one of the most entertaining Canadian shows currently streaming. Doug, his father and Dattu, Priya and his partner back in Canada are all really likable characters, characters I'd love to see more of. The show has a unique setting (India & Canada), good storyline and entertaining lead and supporting cast. Ignore the naysayers and watch The Indian Detective.

b_dumoulin17 December 2017My wife and I enjoyed this very much. I have been tired of Russell Peter's comedy skits but he was very enjoyable in this role, nicely understated. The supporting cast were all good and there was a nice mix of humour and tension. I hope there will be a second season.

Russell Peters is a demoted fourth class constable named Doug D'Mello of the Metro Toronto Police force. His patrol partner is Constable Robyn Gerner played by Christina Cole. They are both ambitious and risk taking patrol officers who get themselves in a wee bit of trouble with their station Captain who decides that Constable Robyn Gerner is deserving of a week's suspension for screwing up a big drug bust by attempting to go rogue. But the Captain has a lot more punishment in store for Constable Doug D'Mello. Doug gets demoted to a fourth class constable along with a month's suspension.
So with a months forced down time, Doug decides to fly back to India to visit his ill father and his father's caretaker/butler. Little did Doug imagine that the case he was suspended for back in Toronto would be intertwined with a drug cartel in far off India, and a very pretty female court appointed/ pro bono lawyer named Priya Sehgal played by Mishqah Parthiephal.
There are a number of other good performances in this mini-series as well by actors William Shatner, actor Anupam Kher who plays studley "Stanley the Manley" who is Doug's ill father, Hamza Haq who plays identical twins Gopal Chandekar, and Meren Reddy who plays the local India police precinct Inspector Abhishek Devo. Inspector Devo and Doug seem to prefer to throw insults at one another in front of the pretty lawyer Priya.
Mrs. Shullivan and I watched all four (4) episodes one episode right after the previous, and we were both in agreement that this mini-series had a decent crime plot that was not to be taken too serious, some interesting characters, and of course the charming and always witty Russell Peters. I find it interesting that at least half of the other IMDB reviewers took exception to some of what they claim were "non-authentic Indian accents". I assume this is a bit of reverse discrimination because it is rare to see this amount of complaining when other nationalities are played by American or Canadian actors, so what is all the complaining about not getting an Indian accent correct, by actual Indian/Canadian actors?
I did not watch this mini-series to watch a heavy action/crime/drama series, or for the Indian accents to be highlighted. Unlike some of the other negative IMDB reviewers, I watched this mini-series to watch an overweight stand up comedian named Russell Peters on the small TV screen chase after a scrawny kid in India, and throw one-liners continuously which is exactly what I got.
I give the Indian Detective a 9 out of 10 rating and I hope we see more of this charming Indian Detective series as the last scene in this mini-series seemed to hint at...to be continued. -
elixirr29 January 2018Before I start, I am a HUGE Russell Peters fan and have seen pretty much seen most of his work (stand-ups). That being said, if you are looking for his usual stereotypical portrayal of personas... this is NOT the show for you.
The trailer looked interesting and have bits of his charm, but that's almost all the "funny" part in the show.
The one thing that really irked me especially being bilingual, was Hindi accent by the Indian cast. You can tell they really dumped it down, are the expecting non-hindi speaking audience to understand what they were saying? It doesn't work that way and came off unrealistic and straight-up annoying.
If you are looking for comedy, this is not it but if you are looking for a light thriller, you may enjoy the show. But it definitely isn't "Russell Peters". -
sssachin267 January 2018I was skeptical right from the beginning about Russel Peters (Of all the Indians out there) being the protagonist. Yet somehow I managed to give him the benefit of the doubt. But in the end, it turned out to be the exact disaster I was thinking about. I can't help but shout out that Russel Peters is the worst of all the Indian stereotypes out there. I mean, his standups are funny but that's what it is limited to - Standups. Apart from that, his portrayal of an Indian guy is just cringe-worthy. When the title advertises about the "Indian detective", you expect an Indian scenario. If you watch Narcos, you know everything is about Colombia & most of the part would be Spanish. Yet somehow, in case of this show, no one in Mumbai speaks Marathi, even the Police station! The Hindi accent is just the worst & infuriating! Language is the first & the most important thing about a foreign drama. If you get that right, half the work in done. But no, no efforts in this one. Even the filming was done is South Africa? Like, really? So, to finish off, your entire time will be spent criticizing the show rather than understanding it. And if you are forced to dislike a show, you know its not worth giving a shot!

The indian girl is just to beautiful to not like and she's a decent actress, this was left a little open for a 2nd season but not that the 1st was compromised. -

Here is the key problem with this one. Other than Russell Peters and Anupam kher, every other actor playing Indian, is a non indian actor, and is speaking hindi as well as english in a fake accent.
Apparently, having brown skin was the only criteria to cast actors playing Indians. They speak Hindi in their native western/south african accents. They speak english in a caricatured indian accent..
Non Hindi speakers might find it ok but any native Hindi speaker watching this will find it very difficult too hold down their food. -

affiliatemary22 December 2017I have no idea what is behind the bad reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Its not going to win awards, but I hope they make more episodes because I found it funny, engaging and very enjoyable.
I have visited India several times so I found the Indian scenes quite realistic and enjoyable. I can't comment on the accuracy of Hindi accents, but since this was made for a Canadian audience, Im not sure that its important.
I was not familiar with Russell Peters, but his performance made me like the character and want to see more episodes.
This is so different from the normal crap available to watch that I would rate it highly just on that alone. It is a refreshing improvement on cop/detective shows. -

One of the better Canadian TV shows I've seen over the last 30 years and less overblown and righteous than standard Hollywood TV. I didn't know who Russell Peters was but my wife is a big fan and I understand why now. The rest of the case was also very good. I hope there are more shows.

mala-849-46983026 December 2017Lots to like about this light-hearted entertaining comedy crime drama set in Toronto and Mumbai. Loved the cross cultural humour and felt it shows something of Mumbai without feeling like a travel show. The plot at first feels too convenient and contrived but there are enough gags, good dialogue, well-drawn relationships and other elements to keep you interested till the plot starts to deliver - in an 8pm time slot kind of way.

Unlike some of the other negative IMDB reviewers, I watched this mini-series to watch a funny overweight Russell Peters chase after a scrawny little kid through the market streets of India, and throw one-liners continuously which is exactly what Mrs. Shullivan and I were expecting to see. And yes, this four (4) part mini-series was hilarious, and Russell Peters was as charming as ever!

But aside from Anupam Kher (his dad) the team really seemed to have a challenge to get Indian looking actors who spoke Hindi and English fluently. How does an Indian LLB lawyer girl, have a Canadian Indian accent when speaking in Hindi? Same with the judge and a few others. Also, the "villains" in the show felt like lacked conviction! Overall good show.

peanutorca23 December 2017Even though most of this show is set in India, it was obviously made with the white population in mind. The show plays on a lot of stereotypes, stooping as low as playing that "mystical indian music". A lot of the hindi is off too, whether it be pronunciation, grammar, or just simple sentence and dialogue structure. I bet it's enjoyable for people that don't know our culture.

Those people speaking Hindi in this show are so fake,its like they wrote the script in English and translate it using google English to Hindi dictionary and let the actors read it.They don't even try to get the police's dress right. I know Russell peters and anupam kher will do anything for money but i don't know why William shatner is there..Even the Indian TV show CID(its a abomination and it insults your memory really hard)is better than this Indian detective..its painful to watch.

kitcfo21 December 2017I binge watched the show. I liked the interplay between India and Toronto. Russel Peters character made sense as the outsider in India who warmed up to Mumbai as he navigated the customs and vicissitudes of life there. I would watch it again if the series continues.
