  • "The Movie was just an logic less entertainer with few comedies mixed up but may not disappoint you if you don't go with high expectations"

    My rating- 2.3/5 (Logicless entertainer)

    Positives-

1.)Johny Antonys comeback- This is not the best from him nor its not the worst from him. His previous venture was a disaster and disappointing. But if you compare with this movie then he has made a comeback but not with a great project.

    2.)Comedy

3.)spoof- I liked the spoofing up of some scenes which was funny.

4.)Mamta, Jude antony,Saju Navodya- Mamta's acting was energetic and her role suited her. Jude antony was hilarious and once again proved his talent at comedy roles. Saju's jokes were good.

    5.)Cinematography and edits

    Negatives-

1.)Direction and script- Director was following the same old clichéd pattern .Except for few comedies script had nothing new to offer.

    2.)Selection of scripts by mammooty

Is it a must watch? Nope.Better wait for its DVD release and its not worth to watch it in theatres.

Overall- This movie is full of clichés and nothing new in this film. Yes there were jokes but will not appeal to everyone. It may only work out if your ready to accept stupidity. Its an logicless film so you need to keep your brains and expectation aside to watch it. Watch at your own risk.

First of all I would say wrong timing. The movie should have been released later on to avoid competition from pulimurugan. The movie has some fun moments. The story is good and kind of enjoyable. However the rain dance was a bit too filmy. The teaser's tagline (20%Love 80%Alcohol) is pretty much the movie's summary. Pashanam Shaji and Alencey goes well with Mamooty's screen run. Mamta is as usual lovable and cheerful. It was kind of nice having Kaviyur Ponamma back. The casting was all familiar faces but there efforts were not enough to make the movie memorable.Frankly speaking, the movie is being overshadowed by Pulimurugan's success so you must keep your ears away from bad reviews. A mamooty fan would love it. Well for the others it depends on your mood, if you want to laugh then laugh.
  • It was very very disappointed movie by great actor Mammootty. Even though there are few scenes which convey good message to the society, the overall story and acting seems to be below average. After fight scenes, mammootty still remains in full makeup. Mammootty should not act in this kind of movie. He is having a good caliber but he simple neglecting his potential for money or to showcase his handsome figure. People need acting and story from seniors and not look. Me and my friends felt to run away from the theater before the end. Most of the audience was disappointed and movie is a complete failure and it couldn't make people laugh as they highlighted.

Few things to improve 1. Avoid slow motions during fight. 2. Avoid extra bass and sound effect for fight. People like originality not fake sound and all. I know these settings and sounds are lively hood of many people but still it is not good for a normal movie like joppan. 2. After fight, the actor should looks like tired and injured. See how mammotty looks like after fight - Clean face, combed hair and ironed dress. What a pity! Audience is not fool.

These are not only my personal feedback but group of my friends there were mammotty fan 10-15 years back. Directors, please bring mammotty caliber back the field. They are just making for blind fans and not for the normal public.

This is an honest review. Same old story.Poor jokes. But acting was okay. Ignoring my friend's warning i went to watch this movie with him(only because we couldn't get a ticket for Pulimurugan for 5 days). The kabaddi scenes will make you cry and story was completely predictable.I wanted to leave the theater after half-time but my friend made me watch the whole movie as a punishment. The supporting actors were good and one or two jokes were standard. The producer of this movie might have got his money back only because it was holiday(1 week) here in Kerala, people like me who couldn't get tickets for Pulimurugan watched this instead, or people who watched Pulimurugan two or three times watched this afterwards.

    In short:No story/poor jokes/average acting/terrific music
  • Director Johny Antony is best known for making CID Moosa, the 2003 hit film which reinvented slapstick comedy in Mollywood. More than a decade later, this comedy drama confirms that he's run out of ideas.

Thoppil Joppan (Mammootty) is a middle-aged unmarried man who lives with his extended family. In his adolescent years, he was interested in marrying Annie (Andrea Jeremiah), but didn't have the courage to ask her hand in marriage or the requisite qualities (read: a job) to provide for her. As a result, he skips town and goes to Mumbai in search of better work opportunities. Many years later, he returns to find that Annie has agreed to marry another man. A crestfallen Joppan resorts to drinking, and vows to never consider marriage. And, one more thing - he is also a Kabaddi player.

After a series of useless sequences that do not contribute to the story has finished playing in front of your eyes, the narrative begins to market Joppan as an altruistic humanitarian who has a heart of gold and wants to help everybody. So much that when damsel in distress Maria (Mamta Mohandas) seeks his help to elope with her soda-glass- wearing boyfriend, he chivalrously obliges. The setting is familiar, and reminds one of both Vipul Shah's Namastey London (2007) and Rajkumar Santhoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009).

It is basically a bunch of adults fooling around. Adults who drink all day and vomit all night. The story (if I can call it that) tries to be straightforward with its intentions, but discloses too much information. Further, for a film which relies on a sport to tell a story, it flouts too many rules. And I am not even talking about the degree of fouls the characters execute while playing Kabaddi. It's a sham, it's a gimmick, it's ludicrous. Seeing thespians like Mammootty and other actors fooling around in a film which does not even have a story is heartbreaking.

The attempt at comedy, which could have saved the film, is poor. The jokes are not funny or have been already sampled elsewhere. The slapstick is cringe-worthy, and so is the performance by certain actors. Salim Kumar is the only person who puts up a good show, so I'm not going to talk about other cast members. Even Mamta Mohandas looked like she has lost her marbles, and was doing the film just because Mammootty is in it. She disappoints for the first time in her film career as she does a character that she cannot handle.

With zero production value, the film looks like it was made hastily, so that it could be released along with Vysakh's "Pulimurugan". No prizes for guessing who won, but watching a heavy man chase tigers mistaken to be leopards is at least a bit fun than watching aged people embracing each other in a game and defying gravity and logic while at it.

Thoppil Joppan is a joke on the viewers, and to sustain such a foolhardy film will require special powers, like a membership in a Mammootty Fans Association.

BOTTOM LINE: Johny Antony's "Thoppil Joppan" is an unenthusiastic feature which was made only to cash in on the fame of its lead actor. All other reasons are just dust in the air. Skim through when it airs on TV.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

I am an avid ikka fan and when thoppil joppan was first announced i had little hopes for its success. Then the teaser came out and i was all thrilled for ikka's next venture. I went to the theatre with avg. expectations from its storyline and direction. But what greeted me was somewhat of the next level. The film is an all out comedy - from the beginning till the end. Almost 30 minutes into the film, I realized that I have been grinning widely and frequently breaking into a laugh. And this continued till the end of the film. The film's unique selling point was Mammootty reprises the role of an achayan after a long time. ( Not Exactly ). The story revolves around Joppan and his failures in love at different stages of his life. He first falls in love when he was a teenager with Annie, played by Andrea. When his father slaps him and orders him to quit romancing until he has a job and earns money. A young Joppan runs away from the home determined to return as a rich man. And he asks Annie to wait for him. And he comes back to his village with all the money he made from 'smuggling' in Mumbai only to find out the love of his life is getting married to some other man. He turns to alcohol for solace and soon becomes a chronic drinker. He is the head of a pack that lives only to drink alcohol. Yes, achayan is a drunkard, but has a heart of gold. So much so that he even helps the girl he loves to elope with her lover. Gosh, that must hurt.

A Feel Good Film With A Strong Social Message At The End. A Beautiful and Elegant Work From Johny Antony. 10 / 10
  • good entertainment and worthy watching. full of comedy. MAMMOOTTY rocked again and its a comeback of SALIM KUMAR. good story line. its about THOPPIL JOPPAN a planter, who is also interested in playing KABADI. in this we can see his romantic, comic and alcoholic characters of MAMMOOTTY. AKSHARA KISHORE played a cute role in the film. it is good family pack with lots of love, fun, small twists. director JOHNY ANTONY and writer NISHAD KOYA did a very good job which is incredible. overall it is very energetic movie and i am sure you will enjoy it with your family without the limits of age difference.
