Chemical Hearts - Movie Review
I wanted to like Chemical Hearts because I enjoy the actors involved and the story sounded engrossing, but it ended up being one of the biggest disappointments of 2020 so far. There was little to enjoy about the story, and I spent most of the runtime completely bored.
The acting was serviceable, but definitely nothing special. Fortunately, there's something about both Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams that makes me enjoy watching both of them on-screen. That helped bump my score up just a little, but it wasn't enough to keep me entertained.
The screenplay was full of clichés, very uninteresting, and doesn't fully explore the themes that it tries to tackle. I never connected with any of the characters, or became invested in their story, and that was a massive problem. Considering that the film is only around 90 minutes, I couldn't wait for it to be over and that's not a good sign.
I did like the soundtrack and some of the technical aspects such as the editing and cinematography, so I can't say that this is a terrible film but it's definitely very bad.
The film focuses on a lot of serious issues, such as loss and mental health, but this didn't translate to a compelling narrative. That's mainly down to the weak screenplay and the mediocre direction, but there were a couple of small elements towards the end that I liked.
However, at the end of the day, Chemical Hearts was a chore to get through, with an uninteresting plot and weak characters, and I would highly recommend to stay away from it.
