  • Guppy is a movie which makes you immerse in a story with it's realism, The characters are well portrayed, even side characters felt so alive. Some characters in this movie will remain in our hearts for a while. Each frames are well planned by the director, Music also plays an important role in conveying the stroy and effect of the movie, we too would go through various emotions as the story progresses

guppy is the only Malayalam movie that made feel complete recently, and I have no words other than superb! to describe master Chetan's and Tovino's acting. it was simply mind blowing. while watching this movie we can see each character has story behind then and that's why I decided to write my first review in IMDb for guppy.
  • The story revolves around a boy nicknamed as Guppy(a kind of fish) played by Chethan Jayalal. The movie invites us to travel through his life, his affection with his mother, friends and many more people who love him. With the introduction of the engineer(Tovino Thomas) into the plot, events take a turn. The main strength of this movie are its characters. They are like perfectly carved sculptures. Even the characters appearing in one or two scenes have their own importance. Music suits the process of story telling perfectly. The performances by all artists were excellent. The director(and writer) Johnpaul George should be appreciated for handling this story that glides through various emotions and situations with exceptional skill. "Guppy" makes you think, feel and will remain in your mind for quite some time.
  • "Guppy" - with the tinge of life. Written by : Vinodini It is quite amazing to know how much impact could be created through a piece of well made creative work, in this case, a beautiful movie. It continues to haunt us for a bit longer as the characters retain their existence inside our minds even after the show time. That was the movie experience given through the perfectly portrayed "Guppy", directed by Johnpaul George. I regret for not having to watch it in the big screen (especially the multicolored fascinating wings of guppy fish elegantly flaunting with the pace of the movie, beautifully captured in every frame), but I don't wonder why this movie wasn't a box office hit either. The story has a rhythm, a slow tune of melancholy, which is a harder phase to get past through, but once we are into that symphony, it would embrace us to the depths of excitement and prolonged happiness. In fact, it takes us through almost all feelings humanly possible. Initially, it was compassion that we feel towards a boy named 'Guppy' (called so because he rears and sells guppy fish which feed on mosquito larvae) for the hardship that he is going through, to take care of his mother. We expect the boy to be modest, down to earth and ideal in every respect, but here is where we explore the fragrance of real life narrated in the movie. He is like every other boy in the neighborhood, who possesses all the flaws of a boy of his age. As the story unreels, we witness the rivalry that takes place between Guppy and the Engineer named Thejus Varkey, who comes to the village for building an over bridge. Here the movie breaks all stereotypes created in our minds through various movies of this genre, especially here the Engineer has the looks of a wandering traveler in a motor bike, who isn't so kindhearted or broadminded either. Unlike the "Heroes" out there, he doesn't seem to be divinely aware of all the untold truths around him. He is also like everyone else, not acting so "goody goody" to everyone, ending up with wrong interpretations, committing mistakes which are honestly humane. Like every youngster, he also gets annoyed with the repeated pestering of an old man offering him black tea. In fact, no one in the movie steps away from being real in words or deeds, thus giving me a notion to believe that the characters still continue to live that seaside village. Master Chethan has played the role of Guppy, and not even for one instance we would feel that it's a fictional character. His ignorance, childish arrogance and his immense passion towards guppy fish, were very perfectly rendered all sequences. Also, Tovino Thomas has done an exceptional performance, portraying the Engineer. His dialogue delivery and weird mannerisms reflect his character precisely. Somewhere hidden behind his arrogant persona, we could sense the sadness in his smiles and empathy towards his co- living beings. Sreenivasan's character as a gatekeeper striving for the upbringing of his granddaughter is also quite remarkable. The rest of the roles played by the cast were also noteworthy. In short, the movie narrates the intensity of real life, the struggle and passion in the most subtle way, leaving us speechless in a world inside our imagination. As for me, I would keep imagining a world where Guppy and Thejus Varkey would spend their lives finding solace in each other's presence, filling the loss of their dear ones. A 'must watch' for enjoying a really good movie with a genuine story-line! Thumps-up to the whole team of Guppy!

    Recommend all to watch...
  • The movie is a really nice feel good movie. I really enjoyed it.
  • A movie with substance. Many of us will find ourselves in each one of the main characters. People whom we often perceive as bad, are not necessarily bad in reality. When driven by the harsh realities of life, we often come across negatively in the eyes of people around us. The storyline conveyed this message beautifully with its three main characters. Script was good and songs were beautiful. Enjoyed cinematography thoroughly. Each frame of the movie had shades orange and blue; formed something sort of a theme. Very good acting by Tovino Thomas and Chethan Jayalal. Great work by director John Paul George and team. Wish there were more movies of this genre.

I was one of the lucky few who watched this jem at theatres.

I watched it simply because it was the next show upcoming when I went to a mall and wanted to kill some time. So I had no expectations and have not heard anything about the movie ( promotions sadly were almost non existing for this movie).

Boy was I blown away ! The score, music, script, acting, realistic and down to earth story !

Sad very few got to experience this in its full glory at theatres ( since the movie became a hit only after DVD came out )
  • This movie flew under the radar when it came out, but it's a lovely little tale on the human psyche without ever getting preachy or manipulative in its storytelling. The child actor Chetan brilliantly portrays growing pains of a boy who despite the tough lot life appears to have handed him, still manages to find love, laughter and fun in his surroundings. The tussle of wits that he engages in with the recently arrived engineer (Tovino) is the plot point, but it serves more as a window into exploring the souls and lives of these two disparate characters. Add some amazing cinematography into the mix and it's no wonder this is one of the best of the year
  • my rating- 4/5(a well packaged and executed movie which makes it a must watch to all types of audience) positives- 1.)direction,screenplay and script- these 3 are masterpiece of this film. the way director introduces us to the world of guppy was excellent and definitely screenplay has supported it. realism was added to each and every scene which wont bore audience. dialogues from each actor looked natural and special mention to the script. john paul(director) was trying to imitate direction style of maheshinte prathikaram. and the story also looked similar as both of these stories has revenge content. but the creativity of the director was good and we could see that in this movie.

2.)cinematography and editing- cinematography was excellent making each and every frame lively and colourful. seaside shots were good and nicely taken. some of the scenes dint even need a dialogue because the scenes itself explained everything.edits were also good.

3.)music and bgscore- i am out of words to praise!! songs and bgscore was totally amazing and loved it. it matched the film perfectly. (this reminded me of maheshinte prathikaram because even in that songs and bgscore was excellent.) 4.)master chetan, tovino and rest all cast- master chetan has done his role neatly with realism and probably he will get state award for his performance. the one scene in climax he holds back his tear was a topnotch one. tovino was excellent and his revenge role with beard was a good idea by the makers. tovino and chetan both were able to emote properly at proper places. rest all characters were all good and it stays in your heart.

negatives- 1.) duration- i felt duration was bit long and they could have trimmed unnecessary scenes so that it woudnt have disturbed the flow of the movie.

is it a must watch? yes from my side. this movie may not have proper stars but that doesn't mean we should avoid it. this movie should be watched in theatres to get the feel but i now feel guilty for not watching it in theatre. but thats fine if you take DVD and watch it and not by downloading it.

overall- one thing i liked about the movie is the presentation style. director tried to add varieties and he eventually succeeded in that. yes there maybe few boring and unwanted scenes which they could have cut but then though it didn't affect the flow in a big manner so its not a big deal. watch this movie with your family and its also a good family drama as well. it explains different emotions we as human's face in certain stages of our life. songs and bgscore were top notch as well as performance from each and every actors. special mention to master chetan for doing his role with realistic touch without any flaws and his climax performance defines everything. the emotional touch the makers gave to tovino and master chetan in climax was fantastic. this revenge drama may have similarities to maheshinte prathikaram due to its theme but we cant compare these 2 in a full manner as the settings and few elements are different. so don't think of comparing it and i only compared the theme not the full story or the full film. (comparing can spoil the film ) my rating- 4/5 (a well packaged and executed movie which makes it a must watch to all types of audience ) For more reviews on all language movies go to- Ridin bal movie reviews

Movie is better with climax twist. I was really confused at half about how they're going to complete this because they're showing the boy as hero and tovino as hero. Buy climax made me emotional. Really nice realestic movie...

    10/10
    Amazing
Best visual and emotional treat. DOP , direction, acting , screemplay. Just an art. Sad movie didn't get much praise
  • The movie is initially little boring or made little sophisticated way that i turned it of due to boring during initial release time.Today i re watched it and had same intention to turn it of but i did not made that movie. After initial bore, the movie get pace since the launch of hero aka Tovino. The movie is just more than feel good.It had its own pain and hardship but made people forget it by its happiness. The all characters portrated decently especially the guy who played the character guppy also the engineer tovino. Sreenivasans character was a mystery which is unviled during the climax. The climax made the hero to villian and villian to hero.I don't say who is who.Better you watch it and feel it.I give 7/10
  • There's something odd about this emotional drama by debutante Johnpaul George, mostly because of the way it is made. Nevertheless, it's still a piece of unimaginative drivel.

Guppy (Master Chethan) is a young streetwise boy who lives with, and single-handedly takes care of, his handicapped mother. His primary job, which helps him bring food to the table, is maintaining the breeding of, and selling, guppies, a type of tiny clean-water fish which is often harvested to keep mosquitoes at bay. When Guppy is not working, he is running some errands for the local people, who return their thanks financially. His dream is to gift his ailing mother a fully-automatic wheelchair, but before he can do that, his uncontrolled pompousness drives him to get into a squabble with Thejus Varkey (Tovino Thomas), a haughty young engineer who has come to the village to build a long- due bridge on the orders of the central government. What follows is a face-off between Guppy and Thejus, who both seem to have personality issues.

I say personality issues because why the characters behave in certain ways at the start of the face-off does not make any sense. Guppy, who is shown as a care-taking, responsible son, behaves like he was hit by a lightning. His air against and around this newcomer, Thejus, is neither convincing nor fathomable. Thejus, on the other hand, reciprocates in equally awful ways despite his seemingly tragic past, which is explored later in the film. Then, somewhere around the 90th minute, a turning point reverses the table and throws the characters into thin air. By the time they hit the ground, Guppy has grown a feverish dash of fear and Thejus has become the most forgiving person in the world. This mercuric stances portrayed by the characters without a detailed explanation is why the film fails for me.

The oddness in the screenplay and the camera work prevents one from yawning to death, and helps in finishing the 150-minute long narrative. The brilliant performances by each and every cast member supported by some occasional humor is what makes the viewing at least a bit light and easy. But, then again, the dawn of drippy sequences as things fall into place wrongfully begins to demand the viewer to shed some tears and grip that mental psyche, for the bittersweet climax is reported like a legend. The convenient disclosure, and thus, addition of a third genre (thriller), towards the end is just an icing on top of the stale flour-infested cake.

Chethan and Thomas rock their portrayals, but even that does not help the story from shifting gears and using smoke and mirrors to dupe its informed viewer. Of course, there is sentimentality involved in the script, but one can hardly connect with the two central characters who, based on their "dispositions", should have shown empathy and sympathy to each other, for their own lives have been a battle and a nasty one at that.

This film may convince some because of its cue-ball narrative and an undertone about a young boy who has peaky mountains as responsibilities. But, there's no compromise with poorly written characters, as George tries to get away with.

BOTTOM LINE: Johnpaul George's "Guppy" could have been a lot better had it supplemented the story with natural realism and basic imagination. Wait for TV premiere.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

One of the best Malayalam movies of 2016. Brilliant performance by Chethan Jayalal. Great debut for director John Paul George. Good performance by Tovino. The pace of the movie was apt for the dramatic script. The movie is about a boy popularly known as "Guppy" who lost his father and takes care of his paralyzed mother. The underprivileged kid's life revolves around his mother who requires special care. He doesn't go to school and earns money by working in a tea shop as well as selling "Guppy" fish which earns him his name. He's hardworking boy who saves money with the dream of buying an automatic wheelchair for his mom. The mother-son relationship between Guppy and his paralyzed mom was beautifully depicted in the movie. The movie takes a turn when Guppy and his gang have a clash with the Engineer(Tovino) who comes to build a bridge. The incidents which happen after the clash takes the matter from bad to worse and create problems for both the heroes of the movie. With a heart-melting ending "Guppy" and Tovino wins the heart of the audience. I classify this movie as a must watch!
  • My fellow reviewers couldn't have said it any better. Guppy was simple, but spoke volumes. With movies like these you learn to read between the lines. A bigger picture of the human psyche, social conflict and realistic relationships portrayed impeccably through a lanky village boy and his fish. Every little frame was such a visual treat! :)
  • Guppy is a malayalam language drama film written and directed by Johnpaul George. The protagonist of the story is a boy known as guppy, as he sells guppy to earn a living. The boy works in a teashop and sells guppy to look after his mother, whose lower half of the body is paralyzed. But events turn out when a rivalry arises between him and an engineer Thejus Varkey who came there to construct an over-bridge in the area. The best word to describe the film would be 'Beautiful'.Yeah,it is beautiful in every sense-the cinematography is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the performances are beautiful, the direction is beautiful even the script is beautiful.Ever aspect of the film deservers applause-the direction, screenplay, cinematography, music, performances, editing, makeup, art direction, costume design, make up everyone has done a brilliant job. This is one of the few films in which almost every actor has given a 'perfect' performance. You could hardly point out any actor who has either overacted or underacted.Despite not having a great story, what makes guppy so good are it's characters, out of which many remains in our heart even after watching the film.Every character has been carefully written. The backstories along with the simplicity of the characters play an important role in making them so good.Eventhough the script was well balanced the 'automatic wheelchair' plot proved to be a disturbance. Both the background score and music was perfect for the 'beautiful' script along with the splendid visuals which at times seemed 'too good'.Eventhough the film had a lot of subplots(some of which could have been reduced)and the narration has a medium pace,it rarely test's your patience. It deals with many subjects like friendship, love(both mother-son love and girl-boy love),revenge, hope, loses but the theme which the director tried to convey at the end was unclear. But in the end it proved to be a beautiful tale which is not only a visual but also an emotional treat for the audiences
  • its a feel good movie.... i really liked the cinematography and the bgm.. seems like the art director as done a great job in setting up the location .because its a big frame. i like the open throat singing of the singers... the realistic quotiant has gone up like anything the with the geographcal pattern used the movie....it may feel like tovino doesn't fit into this role. but he has done the justice in the second half..... i applaud the effort of the director in coming up with a 'silma' which doesn't have romance, violence or nonveg jokes.....kudos to chetan. the way he is doing the climax is wonderful.....

overall its a movie worth watching to all types of audience
  • The movie features the story of a 12 year old boy,Guppy, living with his mother , who is paralysed below hips after the death of her husband. 'Guppy' is the pet name given to the boy by the local people after he started to cultivate the fish 'guppy' in a rain water drainage . His dream is to buy a automatic wheelchair to his mother.

It was this time, engineer Thejus Varkey came to the town on the request of the government to build railway bridge on the town. The story revolves around the clash between the boy and thejus varkey, we soon start to question who the real villain in the movie is?

overall good movie with awesome visuals

  • Warning: Spoilers
Guppy movie is well set in the backdrop of a colony where a teenager live with his disabled mother making small income doing all kind of jobs including breeding Guppy fish which is used by corporation to kill mosquito larvas in drainage's.

With the arrival of en engineer to construct a railway over bridge movie takes a turn , after which it loses direction in its story telling and makes unrealistic twists which makes it really boring at the end. If little more attention is given to make the script realistic, this would have been a wonderful movie. the railway gate man stabbing an engineer just because the bridge he is planning will make him jobless is the most unrealistic part of it.

However the performance of all actors , especially guppy, mother ( Rohini) and engineer ( Tovino thomas ) is good. Overall it is a watchable movie for its freshness and camera-work, But don't expect more

Simple and interesting drama. Each character and their uniqueness is portrayed with entertaining screenplay. The climax is really the great one for this movie and gives meaningful to the watching of bit stretched drama.

There are too many sub plots for each character and it felt dragged at some point in the middle. The solid making and interesting characters and feel good climax make it worth the watch.

This is how a movie should be made. The movie is well crafted with emotions and the ego clash between a very young man and an elder man is shown in a sheer character study showcase. The main character is so accurate in his performance equally supported by the other main character as a boy filled with mixed and confused emotions. Hats off to the director and others who helped creating this well made film. The song thaniye was too a diamond in the rough.

All the few negatives there may exist in this movie is outweighed by the good!
