Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum recently revealed the director he's hoping will agree to direct the company's rumored Friday the 13th reboot.
During an interview with Collider for his upcoming horror movie Imaginary, Blum revealed that Friday the 13th would be the one project he wished he could greenlight immediately, despite not owning the rights. "Friday the 13th is what I would do. It's not a Blumhouse project, but I'm trying to will it into being one," he said. "It's just a piece of IP I've always loved." When asked who would direct the potential horror reboot, Blum named his new business partner, James Wan, revealing that he is also "very passionate about it, and I think we would have them shepherd it for us. That would be a lot of fun."

Jake Gyllenhaal is channeling Patrick Swayze in the new official poster for the Road House remake.
Set to debut on Prime Video in March, the new Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a reimagined version of the character originally played by Patrick Swayze. The original movie's poster featured Swayze as Dalton posing with his arms crossed, as the Road House logo, stylized like a dive bar's neon lights, looms above. Amazon's new poster for the remake features Gyllenhaal in a similar pose with a nearly-identical Road House logo brandished above his head. Both posters can be seen below as a comparison, showcasing another way the new film honors the original movie.

For Ava DuVernay, whose projects like 13th, Selma, and When They See Us challenge viewers to contend with the gut-wrenching racism that’s colored American history, Origin provides a more global perspective on racial inequality and its foundation within social hierarchies.
“I try to make soul food with my movies, not junk food, not fast food,” DuVernay tells Rolling Stone. “Not stuff that goes in and goes straight up the next day, but stuff that sticks to your ribs.”

Welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
As schedules go, they could not record together, so we’re having another double episode today, but this time with Origin director Ava DuVernay and the film’s star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
Origin is based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2020 bestseller Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents and tracks the Pulitzer Prize winner’s creative and personal journey over several continents through grief, revelation and the evils of historical stratification. The film draws parallels between historical and modern-day oppression and persecution across the world. By weaving global threads of cruelty and dehumanization together, it underscores the timeless – and timely – dangers of extremist ideology and leaders who exploit prejudice.
King Richard Oscar nominee Ellis-Taylor plays Wilkerson, and she’ll also be featured in Netflix/Lee Daniels’ film The Deliverance opposite Andra Day and Glenn Close,...

Jonas Govaerts's Cub (or Welp) might just be the nastiest backwoods slasher to come creeping out of Belgium since The Ordeal by Fabrice Du Welz traumatized moviegoers in 2004. In Govaert's 2014 directorial debut, a group of unfortunate cub scouts find themselves in the crosshairs of a demented father/son duo with a proclivity for corpse hoarding and hunting humans in the French countryside. Viewers expecting a slasher flick in a similar vein to Friday the 13th need to look elsewhere. Govaerts’s Cub is a brutally original movie with a clear identity. Yes, there are a ton of little nods to Sleepaway Camp, The Final Terror, and Just Before Dawn scattered throughout, but Cub’s direction and writing are a cut above these films. The director never resorts to the tactics we’ve come to expect from these slashers. The first thing that marks a significant departure is that he...

Ava DuVernay returns with “Origin,” a sprawling drama that critics have hailed as the director’s most ambitious and accomplished movie. Those reviews have yet to turn the film into an awards season juggernaut — it was shut out of the Globes, AFI and other early awards — but admirers of “Origin” hope that it will eventually find its footing with Oscars voters. Neon, the indie label behind “Parasite” and “I, Tonya,” is releasing the film in theaters on Jan. 19. It had a small qualifying run last weekend.
“Origin” is an adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed best-seller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” It follows the author as she endures personal grief while investigating the global phenomenon of caste and the way it warps societies and sows division and hatred. The trailer gives a hint at the way the film ties together these different strands, showing scenes of a Nazi rally...

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

What do moviegoers want to see right now? For decades, studios have had very specific answers to this question, but considering that 2023’s box office was dominated by two films called Barbie and Oppenheimer, it seems like those preconceived notions might be changing. When we look at the films already scheduled for 2024, there certainly seems to be a lot of familiarity that might be old hat.
But look again at a few of the auteur pieces that have already been slated. Even the blockbuster class looks surprisingly ambitious, with new works from the likes of George Miller, Denis Villeneuve, and Bong Joon-ho. There are also familiar favorites, such as a new Deadpool flick, and curious question marks–like Robert Eggers remaking the greatest vampire movie of all time more than a hundred years later. 2024 should be an interesting year at the movies. So here are a few to watch out for.

Love & Death depicts the Betty Gore murder in a realistic and chronological manner, emphasizing the "why" rather than creating mystery. Candy struck Betty 41 times with an axe, with 28 blows to her head, showcasing the heinous nature of the crime. Betty's infant daughter was asleep and unharmed during the murder, highlighting the tragic circumstances surrounding the event.
This article contains mention of murder.
Love & Death discloses some horrific details about the Betty Gore crime scene, raising the question of how accurate the show's depiction of the murder is to the real-life crime. HBO Max's Love & Death is not the first show that attempts to capture the gruesome nature and the tragic circumstances of Betty Gore's murder as it follows Candy released a year earlier. However, what makes its portrayal of true crime stand out is its ensemble cast and its attempt to dig deeper into the motives and emotional bearings of the people involved.

The latest installment of the Alien franchise leans into its '80s horror roots and features a moment reminiscent of Friday the 13th, a classic slasher film. While the original Alien film didn't adhere to the '80s slasher rules, the new comic, Alien Vol. 4 #1, follows this trend by having a Xenomorph kill a couple who were being intimate. This comic proves that Alien sometimes follows the rules of '80s horror, despite being primarily a sci-fi/horror franchise, and it's exciting to see the series embrace its horror roots once again.

Horror movies often leave big, unsolved mysteries, like the violent bird attacks in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" or the origins of the entity in "It Follows." Many horror movie mysteries are never explained, like who Billy is in "Black Christmas" or what really happened to the Engel family at the end of "Krampus." The unexplained mysteries in horror movies add to their terror, leaving audiences with unanswered questions, like the origin of the monsters in "Bird Box" or the true identity of the Blair Witch in "The Blair Witch Project."
While many horror movies tell complete stories, there are many others that have left some big, unsolved mysteries. It’s not uncommon for horror movies to end on cliffhangers that never pay off as they don’t expand with sequels, nor is it surprising for them to have plot twists that, more often than not, only make the story more confusing.

The Friday the 13th franchise has seen many revisions of Jason Voorhees' iconic outfit, with each movie revealing a different stage in his character journey. Not every costume is created equal, with some of Jason's looks being less impressive than others. The fake Jason in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning lacks screen time and doesn't live up to the real Jason's official look. Some of Jason's looks, like the one in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, feature impressive makeup and visual design, showcasing a frighteningly rotten visage and distressed outfit.

In Ava DuVernay’s latest film, Origin, which held its U.S. premiere at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville on Friday, the filmmaker wrestles with a lot of big ideas. For the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker behind Selma, 13th and When They See Us, tackling big questions about race, class and history is nothing new — but for her latest feature, she admits she had to break a lot of established filmmaking rules to bring the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Isabel Wilkerson to the screen.
Taking inspiration from Wilkerson’s acclaimed 2020 book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, DuVernay’s film is partly a portrait of Wilkerson — played in the film by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who recently earned a Gotham Award nom for her role in the film — as she embarks on an intellectual journey across time and place to connect how social hierarchies in distinctly different cultures across the globe are connected,...

Both 1978’s Halloween (watch it Here), directed by John Carpenter and 1980’s Friday the 13th (watch it Here), directed by Sean S. In an interview with /Film, Leone opened up on his own horror awakenings, citing Jason as his all-time favorite horror villain along with his desire to helm a film starring the hockey-masked slasher. Though he admittedly did not have an actual pitch for the film, the director said his Friday the 13th film would be a period piece set during the early 1980s in which he would attempt to make Jason "scary" again, a quality he believes the character has lost over time. "I feel like that's something they kind of lost as the movies went along," Leone said. "You just start getting too comfortable with these villains and you need to be scared of them again.

This post contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and other Mike Flanagan works.
Acid raining from the sky, bodies melting into globs of indiscernible flesh, a troubled boy sucking the last bits of breath into his decimated lungs.
These sights and so much more punctuate the climax to the second episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, easily the most ghastly death in a series full of unsettling ends. Any horror filmmaker would be happy to craft such an upsetting scene, but that’s not all that Usher creator Mike Flanagan can do.
Just moments before young Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) gets liquified, he’s met by Verna (Carla Gugino), a woman who haunts every member of the Usher family. Apropos of the Edgar Allan Poe story that gives the episode its title “The Masque of the Red Death,” Verna arrives at the rave...

Ava DuVernay’s latest drama “Origin” has added an original song to its Oscar prospects.
New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, “I Am,” at a private film screening at the Edition Hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday. He also co-wrote the track with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta. The song enters a competitive race of Oscar hopefuls from movies such as “Barbie” and “Trolls Band Together.”
Walker would make history as the second Indigenous person, and the first Indigenous man, nominated for original song. Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person ever to win an Academy Award in 1982 for the song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Aside from Sainte-Marie, the only Indigenous Oscar winner in 95 years is Taika Waititi, who took home the adapted screenplay prize for “Jojo Rabbit” (2019).

Friday the 13th screenwriters shared an unmade sequel script that included a shocking kill scene involving Jason Voorhees and a zipline rider named Val. The scene depicts Val being cut in half by Jason, with her lower half flying. The writers compare Jason's swing to Bryce Harper's in a World Series game. The script also included an extended opening sequence set in winter, followed by the reopening of the summer camp. Shannon and Swift released additional pages featuring a flashback sequence with a young Jason and both of his parents.
Jason Voorhees killing a zipline rider is certainly a novel idea. And if the Friday the 13th screenwriters had their disgustingly creative way, such a jaw-dropping sequence would have opened their sequel to the reboot. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift penned the 2009 reimagining of Sean S. Cunningham’s original Friday the 13th (1980), and their follow-up would have found a brand-new character,...

Artist Moutchy_tee creates a captivating collage of Jason Voorhees, cataloging his different looks from the original movie to the futuristic Jason X. Jason Voorhees has undergone intense physical changes throughout the Friday the 13th series, wearing different masks and showing the wear and tear of his battles. The artwork serves as a tribute to Jason's evolution and hints at the possibilities of what form the iconic killer could take in future Friday the 13th movies.
Friday The 13th artwork takes a trip through time and spotlights the many different looks of Jason Voorhees throughout the franchise's over 40-year history. After making a brief appearance as a decomposing ghoul in a final scare in the original 1980 movie, Jason rose and began his own bloody killing spree in the sequel, Friday the 13th Part II. Often donning a hockey mask, Jason would not only haunt Camp Crystal Lake, but widen his...

It’s Friday the 13th, and what better day could there be to compile a list like Friday the 13th Movies Ranked? While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all! I struggled to decide which order to put them in, and ended up listing them based on which ones I would most like to watch at any given time. So here they are, listed from “Yes, put that movie on right now!” to “Sure, okay, let’s watch it.” Check it out, then let us know how you would rank the...

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writers of the 2009 version of Friday the 13th, have been sprinkling out details about the remake’s unmade sequel over the years, and today they’re celebrating Friday the 13th with a full kill scene from the script. But first, a little recap.
From what we’ve gathered, the film was set to be a direct sequel to the 2009 remake, but centered on new characters rather than continuing Whitney and Clay’s story. The plan was for the film to be set during the Winter, and its title was The Death of Jason Voorhees.
The writers note, “The script had an extended opening sequence again, this time in winter, then the rest of the movie is the reopening of the summer camp.”
Today isn’t the first time Shannon and Swift have shared pages from the script they wrote, as back in 2017 they tweeted...

The film that kicked off the franchise sees swimsuit-clad young adults picked off one by one in gruesome fashion at the site of an unsolved double murder
Sean S Cunningham’s teen horror classic from 1980 is now rereleased: this is the original movie, the ancestral prequel or origin myth machine-tooled to create a franchise, that readies the noisome and mostly offscreen figure of Jason Voorhees as an almost supernatural surviving villain of the future series – although this went against the idea of his supposed death in this film as the premise for a more rational psychological thriller. This franchise clearly arose from the wild popularity of John Carpenter’s Halloween, although Friday the 13th openly borrows from a much more venerable model, Hitchcock’s Psycho, in the screeching Herrmannesque strings and the oedipal complex behind the horror – although this one being rather ingeniously showed from the point of view of the mother,...

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is actually an underrated entry in the series. The movie finally gave the series interesting characters and felt like a cut above its predecessors. It was essentially a good version of other controversial slasher movies while arguably prophesying Scream.
The Friday the 13th series is one of the most well-known horror movie franchises, with many considering it part of the slasher genre's "trinity" alongside Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Despite this renown, the series isn't exactly known for particularly well-received movies. Ironically, one of its more contentious entries was actually a great example of the franchise's potential.
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning was the fifth movie in the series, though its villain wasn't exactly Jason Voorhees. This sullied the movie in the eyes of fans, but the film actually raised the bar in terms of overall grade. It and its follow-up...

Ava DuVernay's Origin is a challenging film that aims to explore the idea of racism as a caste system, drawing from Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste. The film effectively visualizes anecdotes and historical events to support Caste's argument through dramatic recreations and flashbacks to different time periods and locations. While the film delves into Isabel's personal life and experiences, the connection between the personal narrative and the larger ideas of the film feels under-developed, leading to an alienating and disappointing ending.
The essential project of Ava DuVernay's Origin is a challenging one. Its source material, Isabel Wilkerson's Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, is a non-fiction book that compares America's treatment of people of color, Nazi Germany's treatment of Jews, and India's treatment of Dalits (formerly called untouchables) to show that much of what we ascribe to racism is better understood as a caste system. This film aims to...

Both Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees are undeniably evil, but not for the same reasons. Jason Voorhees is a tragic monster driven by revenge, while Michael Myers is motivated by innate evil. Jason Voorhees is governed by his love for his mother, while Michael Myers shows no regard for family bonds.
Two of the biggest franchises in the slasher horror movie genre are Friday the 13th and Halloween. Featuring cruel killers Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, these movies are full of gore, death, dismemberment and inhumane evil. Given how iconic they both are, however, it begs the question of which killer slays to the greatest degree.
Both Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees are unrelentingly evil, with their sadistic need to kill keeping them from dying themselves. There are different reasons for these characterizations, especially as the respective movie franchises have been rebooted over the years. Nevertheless, only one of these...

Finish Him: New Music Video from Wolfie’s Just Fine Induces Warm ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Nostalgia [Watch]
Whether he’s singing a beautiful song from the perspective of a Graboid in the Tremors franchise or waxing poetic about Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, musician Jon Lajoie (aka Wolfie’s Just Fine) has proven himself to be a master of pop culture nostalgia, carving out a unique niche for himself with his surprisingly tender and thoughtful reflections on the past.
Lajoie is back for the Halloween season with a brand new Wolfie’s Just Fine single, and this time around he’s penned a loving ode to Mortal Kombat 2. As always, Lajoie approaches the topic from a highly personal point of view. As he explains in the video’s brief description, “This is a song about the very first time I felt good at something. I was 13. True story.”

The dispute over ownership of the Friday the 13th is one of the most storied in horror movie history. And while things have settled over the last few years, there’s another studio that wants in on the action. Blumhouse — the studio behind the new Halloween trilogy and this month’s The Exorcist sequel Believer — is interested in making Friday the 13th the focus of their next big project.
Speaking with Inverse, Blumhouse producer Ryan Turek said that Friday the 13th is definitely in the studio’s crosshairs (perhaps via a speargun?). “Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask.

Today, horror remakes are still a popular trend in Hollywood. Sure, the early 2000s craze was notable for its massive relaunches of our favorite IPs: Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, The Amityville Horror, and many more. These retellings reeled in horror fans eager to see what new elements had been added to their favorite classics. One of the first remakes to set the trend in motion was 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The film was part of the Platinum Dunes catalog when it launched to stir things up in the horror community. Michael Bay, one of the founders, was responsible for giving thumbs-up to remake projects like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Hitcher, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with only a few giving people anything to talk about. The Leatherface-starring one is one of the good ones in the universe of remakes.

It's not hyperbole to call Ava DuVernay one of the most exciting storytellers working in film and TV right now. Thanks to her efforts behind the camera on the lauded Civil Rights Movement drama "Selma" and criminal justice system documentary "13th" (along with her equally revered work on the 1989 Central Park jogger case miniseries "When They See Us"), DuVernay has emerged as the leading voice in tackling issues of inequality onscreen. Even her flawed venture into fantasy filmmaking with Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" was far and above more ambitious and interesting than any other live-action film the House of Mouse has put out over the last decade.
Now, five years after "Wrinkle" opened in theaters, DuVernay is finally back with a new feature film: "Origin." The project is based on journalist Isabel Wilkerson's acclaimed 2020 non-fiction book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents," which examines the history of systematic inequality across the world,...

Neon announced Tuesday that they have acquired worldwide distribution rights to Ava DuVernay’s latest directorial effort, “Origin” ahead of its Wednesday premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Inspired by Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed novel, “Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents,” DuVernay’s film turns Wilkerson into a real character played by Oscar-nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard”). As the official synopsis for the film reads, “While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery. Despite the colossal scope of her project, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time.”
The film also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Jasmine Cephas-Jones and Connie Nielsen.
Accompanying the release is a brief first teaser of the movie, giving audiences their first glimpse of Ellis-Taylor’s Isabel.

Neon has acquired worldwide rights to Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” ahead of its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
The movie, starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal and Niecy Nash-Betts, will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Origin” will be released in theaters later this year.
DuVernay is the first African American woman director in competition in Venice’s 80-year history. She wrote, produced and directed the film, which is inspired by the life and work of Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson as she pens her seminal book “Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents.” A press release describes the plot as such: “While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery. ‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

Futurama season 11, episode 6 pays tribute to the late rapper Coolio, who voiced the character of Kwanzaa-Bot, in a moving dedication. The episode "I Know What You Did Next Xmas" returns to the Robot Santa-centric storytelling of earlier seasons, providing a major role for Kwanzaa-Bot and leading to a poignant in-memoriam message at the end. Coolio, known for his distinctive voice and hits like "Gangsta's Paradise," appeared in three episodes of Futurama and had a successful acting career in movies and TV shows outside of the show.
After a fun festive adventure, Futurama season 11, episode 6 ended with a moving dedication to the late rapper Coolio. Futurama’s season 11 revival has largely kept the show’s tone relatively light. A few of the season’s episodes tugged at the heartstrings of viewers, but none of them were outright devastating. Futurama’s season 11 revival has not...
