The lineup for the 77th Cannes Film Festival has officially been unveiled. As of right now, 19 films will be competing for the prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or. The festival will be running from May 14 through the closing ceremony on May 25 in the small town on the French Riviera. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig, fresh off of her success writing and directing “Barbie,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The remaining members of the jury have yet to be announced.
Having an idea of a filmmaker’s history at the festival can sometimes help give us an insight as to who could be in the best position to take home the Palme. For example, two of this year’s entries come from filmmakers who have previously claimed the Palme. Another five are from directors who have won prizes in official...

Last year, author R. G. Henning sent the book Sackhead: The Definitive Retrospective on Friday the 13th Part 2 – a 277 page book entirely dedicated to 1981’s Friday the 13th Part 2 – out into the world, and you can pick up a copy of Sackhead at This Link. Now Henning has turned his attention to the next sequel in the franchise, 1982’s Friday the 13th Part III, with the retrospective book Jason 3D: A Comprehensive Exposé on Friday the 13th Part 3, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon! The book is currently going for the price of $18.99.
Jason 3D has the following description: In 1982-83, the 3-D movie craze took the American box office by storm. Spurred on by new three-dimensional projection technology, Hollywood studios gambled on genre films. By 1984, however, most 3-D features had flopped, and audiences soon lost interest. For Ava DuVernay, whose projects like 13th, Selma, and When They See Us challenge viewers to contend with the gut-wrenching racism that’s colored American history, Origin provides a more global perspective on racial inequality and its foundation within social hierarchies.
“I try to make soul food with my movies, not junk food, not fast food,” DuVernay tells Rolling Stone. “Not stuff that goes in and goes straight up the next day, but stuff that sticks to your ribs.”

Welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
As schedules go, they could not record together, so we’re having another double episode today, but this time with Origin director Ava DuVernay and the film’s star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
Origin is based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2020 bestseller Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents and tracks the Pulitzer Prize winner’s creative and personal journey over several continents through grief, revelation and the evils of historical stratification. The film draws parallels between historical and modern-day oppression and persecution across the world. By weaving global threads of cruelty and dehumanization together, it underscores the timeless – and timely – dangers of extremist ideology and leaders who exploit prejudice.
King Richard Oscar nominee Ellis-Taylor plays Wilkerson, and she’ll also be featured in Netflix/Lee Daniels’ film The Deliverance opposite Andra Day and Glenn Close,...

Ava DuVernay returns with “Origin,” a sprawling drama that critics have hailed as the director’s most ambitious and accomplished movie. Those reviews have yet to turn the film into an awards season juggernaut — it was shut out of the Globes, AFI and other early awards — but admirers of “Origin” hope that it will eventually find its footing with Oscars voters. Neon, the indie label behind “Parasite” and “I, Tonya,” is releasing the film in theaters on Jan. 19. It had a small qualifying run last weekend.
“Origin” is an adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed best-seller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” It follows the author as she endures personal grief while investigating the global phenomenon of caste and the way it warps societies and sows division and hatred. The trailer gives a hint at the way the film ties together these different strands, showing scenes of a Nazi rally...

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

What do moviegoers want to see right now? For decades, studios have had very specific answers to this question, but considering that 2023’s box office was dominated by two films called Barbie and Oppenheimer, it seems like those preconceived notions might be changing. When we look at the films already scheduled for 2024, there certainly seems to be a lot of familiarity that might be old hat.
But look again at a few of the auteur pieces that have already been slated. Even the blockbuster class looks surprisingly ambitious, with new works from the likes of George Miller, Denis Villeneuve, and Bong Joon-ho. There are also familiar favorites, such as a new Deadpool flick, and curious question marks–like Robert Eggers remaking the greatest vampire movie of all time more than a hundred years later. 2024 should be an interesting year at the movies. So here are a few to watch out for.

In Ava DuVernay’s latest film, Origin, which held its U.S. premiere at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville on Friday, the filmmaker wrestles with a lot of big ideas. For the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker behind Selma, 13th and When They See Us, tackling big questions about race, class and history is nothing new — but for her latest feature, she admits she had to break a lot of established filmmaking rules to bring the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Isabel Wilkerson to the screen.
Taking inspiration from Wilkerson’s acclaimed 2020 book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, DuVernay’s film is partly a portrait of Wilkerson — played in the film by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who recently earned a Gotham Award nom for her role in the film — as she embarks on an intellectual journey across time and place to connect how social hierarchies in distinctly different cultures across the globe are connected,...

The episode of Horror Movie Rip-Off covering Halloween and Friday the 13th was Written by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Ryan Cultrera, Edited by Ryan Cultrera, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Intro
Here lies the ultimate horror movie ripoff showdown between predecessor and potential successor. A debate for the ages, between two slasher icons. Was 1980’s Friday the 13th born from blood and ash, only because of a certain box-office titan that cemented its horror film legacy prior in 1978? Both 1978’s Halloween (watch it Here), directed by John Carpenter and 1980’s Friday the 13th (watch it Here), directed by Sean S. Cunningham both stand out as those proverbial slashers that stood the test of time and have spawned countless sequels throughout its franchise run. This post contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and other Mike Flanagan works.
Acid raining from the sky, bodies melting into globs of indiscernible flesh, a troubled boy sucking the last bits of breath into his decimated lungs.
These sights and so much more punctuate the climax to the second episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, easily the most ghastly death in a series full of unsettling ends. Any horror filmmaker would be happy to craft such an upsetting scene, but that’s not all that Usher creator Mike Flanagan can do.
Just moments before young Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) gets liquified, he’s met by Verna (Carla Gugino), a woman who haunts every member of the Usher family. Apropos of the Edgar Allan Poe story that gives the episode its title “The Masque of the Red Death,” Verna arrives at the rave...

Ava DuVernay’s latest drama “Origin” has added an original song to its Oscar prospects.
New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, “I Am,” at a private film screening at the Edition Hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday. He also co-wrote the track with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta. The song enters a competitive race of Oscar hopefuls from movies such as “Barbie” and “Trolls Band Together.”
Walker would make history as the second Indigenous person, and the first Indigenous man, nominated for original song. Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person ever to win an Academy Award in 1982 for the song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Aside from Sainte-Marie, the only Indigenous Oscar winner in 95 years is Taika Waititi, who took home the adapted screenplay prize for “Jojo Rabbit” (2019).

It’s Friday the 13th, and what better day could there be to compile a list like Friday the 13th Movies Ranked? While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all! I struggled to decide which order to put them in, and ended up listing them based on which ones I would most like to watch at any given time. So here they are, listed from “Yes, put that movie on right now!” to “Sure, okay, let’s watch it.” Check it out, then let us know how you would rank the...

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writers of the 2009 version of Friday the 13th, have been sprinkling out details about the remake’s unmade sequel over the years, and today they’re celebrating Friday the 13th with a full kill scene from the script. But first, a little recap.
From what we’ve gathered, the film was set to be a direct sequel to the 2009 remake, but centered on new characters rather than continuing Whitney and Clay’s story. The plan was for the film to be set during the Winter, and its title was The Death of Jason Voorhees.
The writers note, “The script had an extended opening sequence again, this time in winter, then the rest of the movie is the reopening of the summer camp.”
Today isn’t the first time Shannon and Swift have shared pages from the script they wrote, as back in 2017 they tweeted...

The film that kicked off the franchise sees swimsuit-clad young adults picked off one by one in gruesome fashion at the site of an unsolved double murder
Sean S Cunningham’s teen horror classic from 1980 is now rereleased: this is the original movie, the ancestral prequel or origin myth machine-tooled to create a franchise, that readies the noisome and mostly offscreen figure of Jason Voorhees as an almost supernatural surviving villain of the future series – although this went against the idea of his supposed death in this film as the premise for a more rational psychological thriller. This franchise clearly arose from the wild popularity of John Carpenter’s Halloween, although Friday the 13th openly borrows from a much more venerable model, Hitchcock’s Psycho, in the screeching Herrmannesque strings and the oedipal complex behind the horror – although this one being rather ingeniously showed from the point of view of the mother,...

Finish Him: New Music Video from Wolfie’s Just Fine Induces Warm ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Nostalgia [Watch]
Whether he’s singing a beautiful song from the perspective of a Graboid in the Tremors franchise or waxing poetic about Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, musician Jon Lajoie (aka Wolfie’s Just Fine) has proven himself to be a master of pop culture nostalgia, carving out a unique niche for himself with his surprisingly tender and thoughtful reflections on the past.
Lajoie is back for the Halloween season with a brand new Wolfie’s Just Fine single, and this time around he’s penned a loving ode to Mortal Kombat 2. As always, Lajoie approaches the topic from a highly personal point of view. As he explains in the video’s brief description, “This is a song about the very first time I felt good at something. I was 13. True story.”

The dispute over ownership of the Friday the 13th is one of the most storied in horror movie history. And while things have settled over the last few years, there’s another studio that wants in on the action. Blumhouse — the studio behind the new Halloween trilogy and this month’s The Exorcist sequel Believer — is interested in making Friday the 13th the focus of their next big project.
Speaking with Inverse, Blumhouse producer Ryan Turek said that Friday the 13th is definitely in the studio’s crosshairs (perhaps via a speargun?). “Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask.

For the second consecutive year, the Massachusetts-based band headlined a concert as part of Silver Scream Con, a horror convention curated by Ice Nine Kills mastermind Spencer Charnas. It's not hyperbole to call Ava DuVernay one of the most exciting storytellers working in film and TV right now. Thanks to her efforts behind the camera on the lauded Civil Rights Movement drama "Selma" and criminal justice system documentary "13th" (along with her equally revered work on the 1989 Central Park jogger case miniseries "When They See Us"), DuVernay has emerged as the leading voice in tackling issues of inequality onscreen. Even her flawed venture into fantasy filmmaking with Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time" was far and above more ambitious and interesting than any other live-action film the House of Mouse has put out over the last decade.
Now, five years after "Wrinkle" opened in theaters, DuVernay is finally back with a new feature film: "Origin." The project is based on journalist Isabel Wilkerson's acclaimed 2020 non-fiction book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents," which examines the history of systematic inequality across the world,...

Neon announced Tuesday that they have acquired worldwide distribution rights to Ava DuVernay’s latest directorial effort, “Origin” ahead of its Wednesday premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Inspired by Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed novel, “Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents,” DuVernay’s film turns Wilkerson into a real character played by Oscar-nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard”). As the official synopsis for the film reads, “While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery. Despite the colossal scope of her project, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time.”
The film also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Jasmine Cephas-Jones and Connie Nielsen.
Accompanying the release is a brief first teaser of the movie, giving audiences their first glimpse of Ellis-Taylor’s Isabel.

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

“‘May December’ is a tour-de-force of writing, acting, and directing: a film built on moment-to-moment surprise, as thought-provoking as it is purely pleasurable,” said Dennis Lim, the artistic director at the New York Film Festival, in a press release. “It cements Todd Haynes’s place as one of American cinema’s most brilliant mischief-makers and as an all-time great director of actors. Alfred Hitchcock almost blew it. For most of Psycho’s runtime, the master of suspense lived up to his name, turning Robert Bloch’s pulpy novel into a thrilling mystery with shocking twists. But then, after the revelation of Norman Bates emulating his mother, now a rotting corpse, the movie stops for a psychiatrist to lecture the audience on Freudian theory. Were it not for the chilling closing voiceover by Virginia Gregg as Norma Bates, and Anthony Perkins’ proto-Kubrickian stare at the camera, Psycho may have gone out with a whisper.
As ill-advised as the lecture scene surely is, it did help establish a key element of the slasher genre that followed. Slashers aren’t just about serial killers who pick off victims one by one. They also need to have deeply weird storylines, dealing not only with the killer’s personal hang ups, but also...

The best horror villains are ones that make us feel a twinge of compassion. A sympathetic origin story can leave audiences doing mental gymnastics when they find themselves feeling empathy for someone killing people onscreen left and right. As exhibit A, I present Jason Voorhees.
Known in pop culture vernacular simply as "Jason," the sub-human killer from the "Friday the 13th" franchise hacks his way through a gaggle of horny teens for the better part of a dozen films and a brief TV series. During that time, he's also gone to space, vacationed in New York, and battled fellow killer Freddy Krueger.
And now, he's baaaack. Well, maybe. Peacock recently announced a "Friday the 13th" prequel series, "Crystal Lake." Legal battles that are arguably more scary than the movies have made it somewhat unclear who will or won't appear in the new series. But that's Ok, because it's actually Jason's mother,...

Some say a hero is only as good as his villain and Batman has the best Rogues Gallery in DC Comics. Bringing all these Big Bads into a new medium for "Batman: The Animated Series" -- which still holds up for many as the definitive take on the Caped Crusader -- wasn't easy. Kevin Conroy's Batman (who will be sorely missed) was the beating heart of "Batman: The Animated Series," with the actor not only expertly portraying the Dark Knight, but Bruce Wayne as well. Our hero faced plenty of unforgettable villains throughout the course of the series, including Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and of course, Mark Hamill's Joker.
Some characters may look like their comic counterparts, but many were completely redesigned for the cartoon. One that was something of a challenge was Killer Croc. Introduced in 1983 in "Detective Comics" #523, this Batman foe was created by Gerry Conway,...

As most diehard fans know, the original Friday the 13th was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, an active Boy Scouts camp in Hardwick, New Jersey. If you didn’t know Erik Bloomquist’s She Came from the Woods loves the 80s like Pac-Man loves Mrs. Pac-Man, the first few minutes should sell a tubular on-screen time warp. Hormonal camp counselors in short shorts prepare for summer’s end while Kim Wilde’s “Kids In America” blares over opening credits like any other Camp Crystal Lake or Camp Arawak copycat. Bloomquist imbues a love of 80s sleepaway horror titles into a contemporary take on Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman — some titles are even name-dropped in dialogue. It’s hardly a modern satire like Cabin in the Woods but avoids feeling redundant through recreations of golden-age genre magic that’s gone out of style. There’s a passionate attempt to prove life can find new ways in a decade’s old slasher formula, and She Came from the Woods keeps the beat(ings) alive for now.

Tony winners Audra McDonald and Myles Frost have joined Aunjanue Ellis in Ava DuVernay’s next feature.
DuVernay is writing and directing the movie based on Isabel Wilkerson’s book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent. Ellis, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in King Richard, was earlier announced for the leading role in the film adaptation now shooting in Georgia.
Wilkerson’s non-fiction book is told through multiple real-life stories and examines how America, throughout its history, has been shaped by caste system, a human hierarchy that dates back generations but still affects our present day.
McDonald has earned six Tony awards. Her screen work includes A Raisin in the Sun, Private Practice and The Good Fight. In 2016, McDonald was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.
Frost won the 2022 Tony Award for best actor in a musical for playing Michael Jackson in Mj The Musical on Broadway.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Although this day marks just the beginning of an ongoing battle for equality, Juneteenth represents an opportunity to celebrate the joy of the Black experience as much as the hardship. And TheWrap’s got a great list of films to get that celebration started.
Once you’ve checked out some of the more educational Juneteenth-related fare, like “13th” or “I Am Not Your Negro,” consider adding some of these flicks to your streaming list.
“Soul” (Disney+)
“Soul,” Pixar’s first film to feature an African-American protagonist, follows Joe Gardener, a middle school music teacher with dreams of becoming a jazz star. When Joe dies prematurely before receiving his big break, he gets a second chance at his fantasy when accidentally enters the Great Before — a place that prepares unborn souls for real life. Not only...

Between Warner Bros. axing her DC Comics movie, "New Gods," Netflix dropping her fantasy novel series adaptation, "Wings of Fire," and The CW canceling her DC superhero drama, "Naomi," it feels like it's been way too long since Ava DuVernay got to make headlines for good reasons. Thankfully, that changes with the celebrated storyteller's next directorial feature, "Caste," which began filming in December 2022 in Georgia ahead of planned shoots in Germany and India. This would be the "Selma" filmmaker's first time behind the camera on a full-length movie since her 2018 Disney fantasy adventure, "A Wrinkle in Time".
To her credit, DuVernay hasn't allowed those various cancelations to slow her down. Quite the opposite, she wrapped up her familial drama series "Queen Sugar" while also helming part of HBO Max's "Dmz" comic book miniseries adaptation over that same period of time (among other things — more on that to come). "Caste...
