Smolensk (2016)

Trivia

Smolensk

Edit
Marian Opania was offered the role of President Lech Kaczynski. He declined it sternly, saying in interviews that he was not going to help create "rubbish assassination theories."
In 2017, this movie was nominated in 10 categories for Polish 'Weze' (Snakes) award for worst movies. It won 7 Snakes: the Grand Snake ('Wielki Waz') for the worst movie of the year, and the Snakes (Waz) for direction, screenplay, actress, actors' duo, embarrassing movie on important subject, and most embarrassing scene.
According to the movie, the Polish national TV reporter who arrived at the crash site first died in Russia under suspicious circumstances, and his film was not released. In real life, the reporter, Slawomir Wisniewski, did not die. His footage was aired publicly, and even wound up in the movie. TVN television reporter Krzysztof Knyz died after he came home from Russia, but he was seriously ill in a Russian hospital at the time of the crash.
The premiere was announced on 15 April 2016, several days after the crash anniversary, but it was postponed, and finally released on 9 September. The official reason was unspecified technical difficulties, reportedly connected with special effects. Unofficial accounts claimed that the film had been shown to Jaroslaw Kaczynski, brother of deceased president, and a leader of political party PiS (Law and Justice), who was not pleased.
