Tom Hanks and Elisabeth Shue in Greyhound (2020)
Tom Hanks stars as a longtime Navy veteran who, as a first-time captain, is tasked with protecting a convoy of 37 ships carrying thousands of soldiers and much-needed supplies across the treacherous waters of the Atlantic during WWII. For five days with no air cover, the captain and his small force of three escort ships must make their way through an area of the ocean known as “the Black Pit,” battling Nazi U-boats while protecting their invaluable ships and soldiers.

    Storyline

    Edit
Based upon the novel "The Good Shepherd" by C S Forester, this is the thrilling story of an Allied convoy crossing the North Atlantic in 1942 as it faces relentless attack by a German submarine wolf pack. The leader of the convoy's destroyer screen is a US Navy commander making his first Atlantic crossing. The story focuses on his command responsibility as he fights the cold, the relentless night, the brutal sea, and his deep fatigue as he chases down the attacking submarines in the deadly game of cat and mouse. The exciting story, a thrilling ride-along with the beleaguered captain, so deeply portrays the elements of battle command that for a long period of time the book was used as a text at the US Naval Academy. —Nlappos

    Edit
    • Trivia
The movie shows the U-Boat passing close to the Greyhound to be under her cannon and immune to fire, however, in reality when this naval tactic was performed, the Captain would order hard rudder to cause the boat to list thereby bringing the cannon down to bear. This is a centuries-old practiced counter maneuver. (This maneuver is demonstrated in many an old pirate or naval battle movie.)
    • Goofs
One of the German U-boat commanders taunts Greyhound over the radio. This would never have happened in reality. Each Navy ship had a radio signal direction finder and if a U-Boat broke radio silence, triangulation would reveal its exact position.

    He is the Captain Now
During the early American involvement in WWII, the "Black Pit" refers to the Mid-Atlantic gap where Allied convoys are left without air cover. They are at the mercy of the German submarine wolfpack. Commander Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) captains the American destroyer USS Keeling, codenamed Greyhound, on his first convoy leading three other warships and many slow moving transport ships.

Tom Hanks is our Jimmy Stewart. He is our everyman and that's why he is so effective. He's not a superhero or a super-fighter. He is a regular man of real internal strength and integrity. This movie is trying to be simple, realistic, and matter of fact. It mostly achieves it by not explaining the military jargon and allowing the audience to figure it out. My biggest issue is the sound design. It's trying too hard especially the whale noise coming with the German submarines. Quite frankly, they are the wolf pack and a wolf growl would fit better. I wouldn't even do that. Silence is more threatening. Another minor issue is the girlfriend. The scene is unnecessary and clunky. It's similar to Cast Away. At this point, he might as well try Rita Wilson. At least, that would be fun for them. Overall, Tom Hanks sells this stripped down war movie. He's the captain now.

    FAQ14

    • What's the reason Captain Krause keeps misspelling his crewmen names? It's left out of the edit. In the novel is he portrayed as dyslexic?
    • Why that transmission guy got a helmet from Spaceballs movie?
    • In the beginning of the movie, we see the escort plane and the ships communicating by light signals, not to break radio silence. Later on, we hear the captain talking to the other destroyers, while they are miles away. It seemed they had broken radio silence, since the subs had seen them anyway. But then, they regret having to break radio silence by calling on the admiralty. So how did they communicate? Or is it an inaccuracy?
