  • In general acting is ok. I seen lot worse. same with direction and script. sure, it can have been better wt time and money but this movie is just a past time popcorn one, not a deep representation of a real situation . also at this time of review, there is not a bunch of fake ones to try to boost it so kudo to producers and crew . I can see the 2 main actresses progress easily to more work and recognition.
  • Is this movie flawless? Clearly not. But what it lacks in maybe say acting or production it makes up for with some wacky and interesting ideas. I would say the mood here is rental store trash without a lot of sexual exploitation.
  • Pretty good for a low budget "Daybreak" esque movie shot in Canada. The plot avoids falling into tropes, and we even get great queer representation. I am 95% certain Scratch is trans masculine, seeing that he has a tattoo on his hand that reads "FTM" Wish the movie cleared that up in the slightest, seeing that the character isn't even referred to using pronouns in the whole film unless you count one scene when Scratch was being threatened and was called a "little girl" which could easily be interpreted as your average misgendering moment.

Some aspects are confusing, but I was delighted to see someone like me on screen on a whim like that! Great movie on a low budget.

There is actually nothing positive on this movie. Acting is like from very amateur high school theater group. There are obviously no skills in filmmaking behind at all. Script is dull and dialogs are awkward. It is the type of movie where the cinema audience colectively laugh to the sillines of what they see.

    Like!
I liked this movie, great story line and effects,if the brother was not in the film and the 2 girls were the leaders then i would have liked it more. i would have liked to see more about what killed the adults
  • "Riot GIrls" is a fun little addition to the "end of the world" genre. Presented as a literal comic book, we're introduced to a world where a virus killed off all the adults and left only kids. The kids split up into two sections, divided by a bridge -- the "West Side", where all the cool kids live, and the "East Side." The "West Side" is run by the Titans, a bunch of football players jocks who have imposed a rule of law over everyone in the West. The "East Side" is seemingly just a bunch of misfits. We're introduced to one group of misfits and their leader, Jack, who "steals to stay alive" according to the comic. After stealing stuff from the West Side guys, Jack is captured by them and taken into the West Side. His sister Nat, her friend Scratch, and Sony -- a guy from the West Side that Jack saved and brought back -- go on a quest to save Jack.

The film moves along briskly and is pretty entertaining. The two female leads -- Madison Iseman and Paloma Kwiatkowsi -- really shine and have a nice chemistry that holds the film together. Of course, as with so many of these type of films, despite the fact that these girls are on their own with no money, they sport detailed and very fine "goth style" eye makeup and a hairstyle that must take a stylist an hour a day to keep up with (I often wonder by no director has ever seen someone in their "end of the world" film sit in hair and makeup for over an hour to get their style done ever said, "You know, someone in this situation wouldn't be able to keep up the grooming on a blow-dried mohawk with a side razor cut, or expansive goth style eye makeup.").

The down side is that there's not really a lot going on. It's not exactly slow or boring, but if you're expecting an action packed film you're probably going to be disappointed. But if you're in the mood for something a little bit smarter than the average "teenagers left alone" movie, worth checking out. I enjoyed it.
  • I have seen worse than this movie. It is not bad for a low-budget movie, although they could have done more of it. The acting performances are okay, I actually think Munro Chambers delivered pretty good (whenever he gives a speech he slightly reminds me of Ivar from "Vikings"). It has some serious stereotypes, but I guess those were a necessity for the storyline (?). Overall an enjoyable low-budget movie.

    Warning: Spoilers
The writing is so bad, not to mention most of the actor's are in their mid thirties; the show is supposed to be about young people (kids in school) trying to survive after a virus wipes out the adults. The main antagonist is is probably 4' tall. The show is a joke!

This film doesn't pretend to be some melodramatic Oscar-hunting art-house movie...it knows what it is: a fun, violent, action-packed teen apocalypse adventure.

Director Jovanka Vuckovic's feature film debut is set in the early 90's, several years after all the adults died from a mysterious illness, and the town of Potter's Bluff has divided into the West Side and the East Side. The West has all the electricity and resources, but are forced to obey their rule of law under a forceful dictator and his preppy jock army. The East, on the other hand, are a bunch of scrappy punks who lack resources and structure, but seem to care more for one another.

However, eventually this lack of resources catches up with the East Siders, as their leader Jack (Alexandre Bourgeois) is forced to kill and steal from the West Side in order to provide for his people. However, the West's dictator Jeremy (Munro Chambers) sends his mullet-sporting henchman Todd (Darren Eisnor) out to stop the robberies...which he does effectively, propelling us to the main chunk of the movie:

Enter Nat (Madison Iseman), Jack's sister, and Scratch (Paloma Kwiatkowski), Nat's more-than-a-friend? These two East-Side girls are the main leads of the film, and do a fine job carrying the weight. The film doesn't hit us over the head with the fact they appear to be an LGBT couple, which is an interesting relief given today's over-politicized state of Hollywood.

The girls enter the enemy territory of the West Side with their new friend Sony (Ajay Friese) in a brazen attempt to save their leader's life.

Will they succeed? Who will live...who will die?

Go watch the film if this sounds like something you'd be into!

I do feel there is a good movie here - hidden somewhere. The question is was the script already flawed to a degree that it couldn't be helped or did that come later, while making the movie? Whatever the case, the cliches are big in this one. Many things get mentioned and than quite forgotten.

Character behave so badly, it'll be hard to really keep any connection to them. It's a small budget movie, but there could have been more. At least that's what I feel and I'm sure I am not alone with that feeling. Probably not worth your time, unless you like the actors or the general theme and overlook the myriad of flaws
  • Ridiculous and a complete waste of money and resources. They need to stop.... think .... and stop making garbage like this horrible piece of cinematic drivel. By not watching or supporting trash B budget movies mabey they could do some actual good in this world and put the money towards helping less fortunate people on the planet and forget about producing really bad movies.

All you need is a movie camera, and some kids. Tell the kids to say and do whatever they think would make sense in a dystopian fantasy. Film them. There! Now you've made a movie!

The trailer says 'two girls', actually played by nearly 30 year olds. Don't you have child actors in America? Weird It's ok, no surprises other than the unexpected violence. I'm not complaining it just felt out of sync with the movie style.

Anyway on to my bigger complaint... boy tries to kiss girl who the movie has not explicitly said is gay but there are heavy overtones.. she backs away and says, 'no, I'm..' then he says, 'I know'. She goes outside and kisses the other main girl. No if 'he knew' why did he make the move. Why are we still making movies where lesbians are 'accessible' to men. It's 2021! Stop being so fragile.

In some alternative world, all the adults die. A town is divided into two with poor punk-rock girls living on one side in a friendly anarchistic society. The west side is run by the rich kids, the Titans. It is a "Lord of the Flies" type dictatorship plus they have the bad club from the "Karate Kid." Eventually, they clash.

I liked the East Side characters while those on the West were incomplete stereotypes. The ending was predictable. Scratch (Paloma Kwiatkowski) likes to make graffiti which consists mostly of her two-word vocabulary of "F-Off." Teens might like it.

Guide: F-word, No sex or nudity.

I just got around to renting this today on iTunes because it was cheap and I've been wanting to see it. I really loved it! I thought it was shot really well and although an indie movie you could tell they had a good budget and the cast was really good as well. I def would watch again.
  • Maybe it's because I was a teenager in 1995 when the film is set, but I could really identify with the main characters, and apart from it taking place during an apocalypse, it really reminded me of my high school experience. It did a fabulous job of mixing the comedy and drama, and it was very entertaining.

I do not understand why it has such a low rating here. Good story, well acted, well told.

Almost wish this movie was longer so they could add more characters and explain backgrounds on why people know each other and how things ended up they way they did etc.

Scratch was a punky rebellious character and made the movie feel like a total punk category. Loved the characters and the simple plot, a little more back story on Nats brother would have been nice. But I loved how the film managed to capture rebellion, love, fighting, apocalypse and gore into one seamless movie. Did feel like there was something missing and the end didn't fully satisfy me but for a low budget not so well known movie I loved it.
