So after watching the series I went straight to the movie. Some people said to prefer it but I really don't. I have no problem with the leads but the story is completely disjointed by the speed they're trying to tell it at and all the details they omitted. For me, this one isn't even worth it for the cheap thrill of experiencing the story when I don't have time to rewatch the entire series, because it just does not deliver the feels or tells the story well enough. Regretfully, not recommended. I'd say watch the series or read the novel, which is absolutely excellent.
  • Anytime you take a complex story full of iconic moments and try to condense it down to 2 hours, you're just asking for trouble. As someone who read (and enjoyed) the original light novel, I knew up front not to get my expectations too high, but I had still hoped for a bit more than I got. Caricature characters, throwing out glib and rushed lines, a barely coherent storyline (which scarcely resembled the novel) and chaotic action sequences, just for starters. That being said, I blame the director more than the cast, since I did feel the actors could have delivered better performances if they weren't in such a hurry.

If this film had any redeeming points at all, it would be the polished cinematography and CG (both were decent, considering the film's budget). Lines aside, the actors also did a reasonable job of acting to green screen, which is notoriously difficult. There were also a handful of scenes overlaying the game world with reality, which were creative and did a surprisingly good job of conveying the feeling of belonging to both the 2-d and 3-d world.

ROMANCE RATING: 7/10. As per the novel, there was only one kiss scene, but it was fairly long and the actors had reasonably good chemistry. Bear in mind that while the scene did feature "A" door, it is not "THE" iconic office door from the novel.

In summary, I'm sorry to say this movie was weak in almost every way. Fans of the novel will certainly be disappointed and newcomers are unlikely to develop any interest in the novel. Not recommended. HOWEVER, if you have to choose between this film and the drama, I probably would choose this, mainly because, as others have mentioned, Angela Baby and Boran Jing have acceptable chemistry whereas Yang Yang and Shuang Zheng did not.
  • Better than the series but still pretty average.

I have watched the show before of this movie and struggled a lot to even finish it. Was so dumb and childish, I couldn't believe it.

By my surprise this one is better but obviously doesn't have enough time to go in depth to any of the storylines.

So you don't get attached with any of the characters, everything happens fast and it's quite superficial.

I think this is an ideal movie for kids and teenagers, good enough acting, a bit of lighthearted romance, some fun effects with the vídeo game scenes and effects.

Entertaining enough for a quick movie night with friends.

Gaming is quite a "hobby". Depending on how much you are invested in it, you get some sort of satisfaction. Shaming others for doing what they love should not be an issue and it isn't here. You actually get a movie about people in love ... and a passion for gaming.

What I just realized though: I only watched this movie and had no idea there is a TV show too. So I have no idea how this is connected, if there was anything added or prior to the events of what happens here either. Therefor I may have a redacted experience of it all - ah the lingo. Enjoyable and decent enough for the right minded people
  • I saw the series first and i really like it. The shorter movie has some plot holes and glosses over the story. I like both sets of actors but I prefer the series. The movie has a more realistic set and the series has a more romatic and stylized set. Watch the movie first. Both are on Netflix (07/2019) with subtitles.

While I have to give compliment to the graphic team that created such a romantically beautiful game world and the fight scenes are fascinating to watch in that fantasy world, I must say that the story itself is one big cliche and with everything too perfect for the guy and the girl. It is all too easy for them, really. Yes, I admit that they are good looking people, especially the girl, quite an eye candy to watch. But other than that, they don't get to show any talent in acting because their roles are so simple and their love is almost without obstacles.

Think of it. The best male player in the game asked the best female player of the game to get married in that fantasy world. They were happy online together and then they happened to fall in love in the reality as well. The girl is one of the prettiest and smartest in the university, the guy is the most handsome, most popular and most intelligent student in the university. Just imagine it! Such a cheesy love story, all that it did was getting the audience to just dream away into a world that can hardly be true, can hardly happen in our reality. They love each other right from the beginning to the end, no argument, no misunderstanding, everyone is jealous of them. In the end, they successfully have their dream job. Their world and their lives are 100% perfect, so unrealistic that I had to laugh.

Well, if you don't want to think of anything, just to watch some fantastic game scenes and two good-looking people falling in love and live happily ever after, this film is for you. Me? I'm way past that age I guess.
  • This movie is too embarrassed to watch for me. The movie edited completely different from the original novel, they took away the character's personalities, conflicts and hilarious dialogues, changed the plots into a cheesy romantic story.

Weiwei supposed to be a exceedingly beautiful girl with great humor and good personality, not the one who has blink blink big eyes but lacking facial expressions. And not to mention the lead guy, his character setting is so embarrassingly ugly, what a terrible hair color and bang.
  • This movie is enjoyable from the first scene to the last, surprising considering that most "gamer" movies tend to fizzle out about half way through. The main character Bei Weiwei (Angelababy / Angela Yeung Wing) could not have been played better. Angelababy is cast in a very feminine and cute role, but brings out the strength, character and competence of both the real life and game life of Bei. Boran Jing does a good job of playing the reserved and stoic role of Xiao Nai, the #1 player in the game. Both players and their avatars are realistically portrayed in a splendid mix of fantasy and reality.

Although cliché, I enjoyed the special way this movie often combined the real world with the game world (although one scene featuring portals on a bridge jumped the shark a bit). Despite the gamer/fantasy setting of the virtual world, the fantasy characters and "real life" character both are played very well. The supporting characters are somewhat cliché as well, though acted well enough. The fact that the movie requires the supporting characters mostly as comic relief and moral support is the one weakness of the story-line, although that is forgivable considering the genre. An Asian movie without such characters would be somewhat of an unexpected let-down.

The story-line is not strong, but strong enough to both keep the viewer entertained and present a morality play as well. It's nice to see a movie that doesn't take tired, over-used side-trips during the main plot. The developing romance between the online avatars and the unwitting Weiwei is enjoyable to watch from the spectator's seat. Much in this is predictable but enjoyable nonetheless.

It's not a perfect film, nor a tear-jerker or film of the year. It just a very enjoyable romantic gamer film with excellent special effects and a script that for once succeeds in an over-used and often-abused genre. If you can understand the concept of mixing gaming and romance I fully expect you will enjoy this film very much.

At first I was sceptical while looking at the poster of the movie my first thought was "can this movie be good?" However this movie proves me wrong the story turns out to be decent and romantic, the actress Angela baby and the actor Jing Bo Ran give life to this movie even though the plot is ordinary. I was laughing hard while watching Angela's embarrass moment and having quick heartbeat while watching Jing Bo Ran giving romantic gaze and gesture toward the female lead. In honesty even the game scenes turn out to be enjoyable and fun while the background song is really annoying. This movie is good to watch one time only since when I watch it a second time I cannot feel the excitement like when watching for the first time.
  • This one is basically a squeezed together version of the drama series version.

I prefer the drama series because you get to see the details, the growth, the long progress.

I really enjoyed the drama series version and as soon as this one came out, I tried not to be so biased because how could this movie beat the drama series when it was good enough already.

I didn't like it enough to remember this film. I just remember an actor from the drama series also was casted in this one.

I don't understand why this one was created.
  • What a chemistry the two main characters have. I so love this movie that made me decide to watch its drama version.

Honestly, the series was one of my favorite shows to watch. Its cool they got some actors from the original for their movie but it is kinda dissapointing...They left out so much and there isn't much flow. If I never seen the original I would be even more confused. There's a ton of events in the movie that has little explanation...suddenly he was in accident, suddenly she is attending a get together...They changed some stuff which is fine, I just feel like there isn't much depth and I'm not bonding with the characters.

The game scenes are nice and looks really good, but the actual story has a lot of holes.

I recommend watching the original series.
  • I watched both versions of LoveO2O and prefer the movie version over the series. LoveO2O the movie is a better mix of reality and gamer fantasy. Angela baby and Boran Jing are better actors, have better chemistry and make this movie about gaming more believable than the series version. Yang Yang and Shuang Zheng have no chemistry and in my opinion, can't act. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end, and here's why: Xia Nai as portrayed by Jing was brainy, but warm; a loner but not weird. Whereas Xia Nai as portrayed by Yang, Yang was stiff, condescending and demanding. He was in a word, distant. Weiwei as portrayed by Angela baby was warm, funny, brainy, outgoing, loving and supportive in this film. She loved her man. Whereas in the series Weiwei was cute but servile, and her personality left much to be desired. She worshipped her man. I was thoroughly unimpressed by Shuang Zheng's performance as WeiWei.

LoveO2O the movie is about love and gaming and in my opinion successfully achieves its goal. I really enjoyed this version of the screenplay and will recommend this version to my friends.
  • Wonderful cast, awesome story! The world building is out of this continuum!
  • This is enjoyable and wholesome. However the flow of the work makes you question some of the choices of the creators: editor, producer, director. It was edited with such precision and concision that one is left not only wanting more but asking two questions : why such a clinical or scientific approach to this work of art? What could be done with the ending to maintain the dynamism or improve the telling of the tale.

As a teacher /aunt I would watch this with Young people in my immediate community. As a lover of good movie/tv art I wanted more. I have seen both modern movies and dramas where the aim to be a particular length reduced the quality of the work and lost both earnings and ratings. In this case, being so precise throughout and the lack of progressive clarity at the end hurt both the longevity and wider appeal of the work. The storytelling at the end seemed to be dependent on one's knowledge of the text on which it is based. But the clarity in the top of the movie is not at the end and I knew from the first meeting with financiers that the idea would be stolen. But the resolution of the story while indicating that the characters overcame the odds, fails to highlight personal or relational growth and development.

Loved both the male and female leads. Actually preferred female lead character in movie to the one in series. Not because of acting skills but the story. But due to such vast differences in character, how one analyses has to be different. Wukd i watch ig again. Yes, because it went by so fast and if was interesting.
