A balloon pilot and a scientist find themselves in a fight for survival while attempting to make discoveries in a gas balloon in the 1860s.
Henry Coxwell was 43 at the time of the actual record breaking flight in 1862 and James Glaisher was 53. The pair were 7 and 16 years older, respectively, than Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne who portray them in the film. A report in The Daily Telegraph quotes Keith Moore, Head of Library at the Royal Society (Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge), as saying, "It's a great shame that Henry [Coxwell] isn't portrayed because he performed very well and saved the life of a leading scientist".

Several characters address Amelia as Miss Wren which is her maiden name. No gentleman would do this especially in Victorian times. Amelia is a widow and should therefore be addressed by her late husband's name as Mrs. Rennes.
During the opening credits, many of the Os in people's names slowly rise, as if symbolizing a balloon elevating.
