"Cecile on the Phone" is an American 11.5-minute live action short film in the English language from 2017, so neither really now nor old. It includes a fairly long closing credit sequence of 90 seconds and is the only effort as writer and director by prolific actress Annabelle Dexter-Jones, who also plays the central character here. Now I am not sure why this is/was relatively high on the imdb starmeter because I cannot really say I know any of the cast members and the one in charge I just mentioned isn't a star either. It can't be just Art Garfunkel's little cameo as a doctor can it? And I say that with the utmost respect. Love the man and his music. Okay, as for the film itself: The title is pretty telling and what you read is what you get. Phone conversations from beginning to end. At the center of it all is a woman struggling with the return of an ex-boyfriend to her city. That's what I read here on imdb. I think the build-up itself could have been handled better and maybe this is the reason why, even if the conversations later on aren't poorly written, I felt this movie never really gained steam. The ending is a bit of letdown too, even if it feels slightly realistic. I cannot say I cared for Cecile at all or was curious what she was doing next, who she'd be talking to next etc. Also the lip thingey was pretty gross no denying. If that is the only thing that makes the film memorable, then there is really no reason to watch here. It's not as if many people have seen it anyway and without the Sundance inclusion, probably almost nobody had. Still kinda curious how they got Art on board after he hasn't been in films for almost a decade. Anyway, like I said, the middle part is okay, but beginning and end left me too unimpressed, so I give this film a negative recommendation all in all. It's not a failure really, but I propose you watch something else instead.
