Tyler Perry‘s most famous character, Madea, has appeared in nearly half the director’s films: a gun-toting, “Hallelu-yer”-shouting force of nature, and an outrageous drag tribute to his mother and aunt. But some films in the Madea Cinematic Universe are gleefully manic, while others arrive in what appears to be a half-finished state of sad melodrama and mediocrity. Not counting her cameo appearance in the otherwise Madea-free “Meet the Browns,” or the animated kids offering “Madea’s Tough Love,” here’s where to find maximum Madea mayhem:
10. “Madea’s Witness Protection”
To look at box office receipts, this one would appear to have been a fan favorite, the second-highest-grossing Madea movie to date. But it came along at a time when Perry was making minor noise about retiring the character, and it really shows. The film looks cheap even by Perry’s budget-minded standards, the jokes are flat, and...

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Will Tyler Perry win his third Worst Actress Razzie Award for playing his signature role as Madea in “A Madea Family Funeral”? It was purported to be the final Madea movie, so perhaps the Razzies will want to send him out with a bang — or with a bomb, as it were. But might it also be time to retire the Razzies trend of nominating male actors for female roles?
Perry is certainly not the only male performer who has been nominated across gender categories for playing a role in drag. Adam Sandler won Worst Actor and Worst Actress for playing twin siblings in “Jack and Jill” (2011), and the Razzies have also nominated Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Martin Lawrence in this category for female characters.

After two months of mostly sluggish business, the 2019 box office got a huge jolt from the most reliable hitmaker in Hollywood, Disney’s Marvel Studios, as “Captain Marvel” soared to a $153 million domestic opening from 4,310 screens.
That result puts the Brie Larson blockbuster third on the all-time list of March opening weekends, sitting only behind the 2017 “Beauty and the Beast” remake ($174 million) and 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($166 million). It’s also the second-highest opening for a film with a solo female lead, after 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with $158 million.

With “Captain Marvel” coming out next weekend, most studios are steering clear of releasing any films that could get caught in the Marvel movie’s undertow. The one studio that is putting out a new film this weekend is Lionsgate with “A Madea Family Funeral,” the tenth and final film in Tyler Perry’s long-running “Madea” series.
First imagined by Perry for his 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” Madea was brought to the big screen in 2005 with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” a film made on a $5.5 million budget that grossed $50 million at the box office. Since then, Madea has been a dependable, low-budget moneymaker for Lionsgate, as the character has grossed a combined $547 million at the domestic box office.
But over the past few years, diminishing returns seem to have set in. The series peaked in 2009 with a $41 million opening and $90 million domestic total for “Madea Goes to Jail,...

Eighteen days into its run, Dennis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” has a domestic gross of $75 million, and a worldwide total of around $200 million. As widely chronicled, that is disappointing for the highly touted and well-reviewed sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1983 cult classic, which has in excess of $250 million in production, marketing, and distribution costs. That leaves the film a long way from any hope of breakeven.
Despite hopes for a last-minute rescue from adult domestic audiences, two straight weekend drops of over 50 percent at home means a domestic total around $90 million-$95 million, with the low end more likely. Most of the world opened concurrently with North America — except China and Japan, where it opens October 27.
What propels any hopes for these markets? In China, it could be the very strong performance for another high-end science-fiction film. “War for the Planet of the Apes” grossed $112 million there, about 75 percent of its domestic take.

As expected, Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween topped the weekend box office becoming the seventh of eight Madea films to open over $20 million. Meanwhile, it was rough going for the weekend's four other new wide releases as Geostorm, Only the Brave and The Snowman essentially bombed while Pure Flix's Same Kind of Different as Me failed to meet the low end of expectations after strong group sales on opening day. Overall, the top twelve generated just $81.3 million, over $30 million less than the same weekend last year as October is currently pacing ~13% behind last year. With an estimated $21.65 million, Boo 2! finished atop the weekend box office while falling nearly $7 million short of the original's opening one year ago. The film did receive an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, just a notch below the original Boo!'s "A" and it will be interesting to see what kind of run Boo 2! can leg out.

In a sluggish weekend for the box office, the only success to be found is Lionsgate’s “Boo! 2,” the ninth film in Tyler Perry’s “Madea” franchise. The $20 million film is on pace to hit its projected target with a $21 million opening from 2,388 screens. The horror comedy made $7.5 million on Friday, including $760,000 from Thursday previews.
Tyler Perry has never been a critical fave, and “Boo! 2” is no exception as it received an abysmal 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But his legions of fans were not disappointed, bestowing an A- on CinemaScore.

Tyler Perry’s “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” scared up $760,000 at Thursday previews. The Lionsgate release is projected to top this weekend box office with $20 million to $22 million from 2,500 locations, with Lionsgate projecting a start on the lower end of that range. That would be a step down from the $28 million opening for last year’s “Boo!,” which opened to $855,000 at the Thursday previews and went on to gross $73 million. But with a reported budget of $20 million, this will still be a strong opening for Perry’s ninth Madea film, which he wrote and directed.
