Since the beginning of the mumblecore movement in the 2000s, independent cinema has been saturated with stories of young (often white) people in their 20s in a state of arrested development. For these people, adulthood is a playground characterized by risk-taking and pontificating about the state of their romantic relationships. With spare lighting and naturalistic camera movements, these films attempt to mimic the rawness of real life, adding weight to the mundane. Though the movement has already passed, these stories continue to thrive at festivals.
In Lisa Steen’s feature directorial debut Late Bloomers, millennial angst is once again at the center of a deeply personal, minimalist story. Karen Gillan plays Louise, an aimless and depressed musician in her 20s struggling to get past a painful breakup. When she discovers that her ex-boyfriend is moving on without her, Louise tries to drunkenly climb into his apartment through the window. Falling and injuring her hip,...

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 barrels the Marvel Studios’ franchise toward its conclusion, Karen Gillan, stopping in Deadline’s SXSW studio provided a glimpse as to how life is shaping up for Thanos’ adopted daughter and Gamora’s adopted sister, Nebula, in the threequel.
“Now we’re seeing Nebula post the death of the source of her trauma, Thanos. He’s been eliminated from the story, and now we’re seeing her character become a little bit of the person that she should have been had that not happened to her,” Gillan told Deadline.
Cranky and combative Nebula’s idea of bliss now is “her new family with the new Guardians and letting love in for the first time, rather than the defense mechanism always triggering. Allowing her to be loved and to love,” said the actress who was at SXSW for the world premiere of her movie...

Gunpowder Milkshake features an impressive cast of action women, but it’s Karen Gillan who holds the Netflix neon noir together. The actress, who first broke onto the international scene in 2010 with her introduction as Amy Pond on Doctor Who, has parlayed that fan favorite performance into an impressive Hollywood career that includes the recurring roles of Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Martha in the latest iteration of the Jumanji franchise. For the 33-year-old Scottish actress, a career in action movies wasn’t something she saw coming.
“It completely snuck up on me,” says Gillan, who also made her directorial debut with 2018 dramedy The Party’s Just Beginning. “I did not anticipate that I would be doing action whatsoever. I don’t know why. It just never even crossed my mind. I mean, I did a little bit of aikido and judo when I was a kid, but it...

Brie Larson made a huge impact when she debuted as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel last spring. Following that and her scene-stealing cameos in Avengers: Endgame, she’s now a major force in the McU. But could the actress move over into a directing role as well going forward? It’s certainly a possibility. At least, according to a new rumor about Captain Marvel 2.
Cosmic Book News notes that an anonymous source has tipped them off that Marvel is considering having Larson co-direct the sequel. She could then step up as solo director on Captain Marvel 3. Even Cbn says to take this with a pinch of salt though, so clearly we shouldn’t put too much stock into this rumor at present. It’s certainly fun to think about, though.

She might’ve already made her impact on the Marvel universe as Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers movies, but Karen Gillan has eyes on joining the DC universe, too, it seems. The Scottish star has voiced her interest in getting to grips with the character of Batgirl – not only playing her, but also directing the upcoming film that Warner Bros. is working on.
While on the Brazilian leg of the promotional tour for Jumanji: The Next Level, Gillan spoke with Omelete, who asked her what other comic book heroine besides Nebula she’d like to portray. “Batgirl would be pretty cool,” was her reply. Having made her directorial debut with recent acclaimed indie drama The Party’s Just Beginning, Gillan was also asked which comic book movie she’d like to helm, and the actress decided to stick with her earlier answer.
“Batgirl would be pretty cool for that as well.

Ahead of its full slate of nominations next month, BAFTA has unveiled the 10 short-listed films that will compete in the category of outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
The nominated works include “For Sama,” a portrait of a Syrian mother’s experience of her country’s civil war, and “Blue Story,” the story of two youths caught up in a South London gang war. “For Sama,” co-directed by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, recently cleaned up at the British Independent Film Awards, winning the prize for best British independent film, while “Blue Story,” the directorial debut of YouTube rap star Rapman, has been in the news because of some theaters’ temporary decision to yank the film because of violence surrounding its screenings.
Other short-listed titles include “Maiden,” director Alex Holmes’ documentary about an all-female crew on an around-the-world yacht race, and “The Party’s Just Beginning” from writer-director Karen Gillan,...

Action thriller Gunpowder Milkshake is putting together an impressive cast, headlined by Guardians of the Galaxy’s Karen Gillan.
Gunpowder Milkshake may sound like an ill-conceived idea for a combustible cold dairy drink, but it’s actually an intriguing action thriller – starring Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji actress Karen Gillan – that’s coming to the table with quite the ensemble for what’s shaping up to be a female-fronted assassin mythos.
Studiocanal and The Picture Company are conjuring the big screen project, which will arrive under the direction of internationally debuting helmers in Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, who achieved acclaim in their native Israel with the 2013 Hebrew-language horror film, Big Bad Wolves, and 2010 horror offering Rabies. The directorial duo wrote the Gunpowder script with Ehud Lavski.

"I can offer you, like, more magic than any mushroom ever picked." The Orchard has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Party's Just Beginning, the feature directorial debut of Scottish actor-filmmaker Karen Gillan, who wrote the screenplay as well. This first premiered at the Glasgow and Tribeca Film Festivals earlier this year, and will be available to watch this fall. The Party's Just Beginning also stars Gillan as a woman named Liusaidh, who's struggling to deal with stress and all the feelings after her friend takes his own life. It's a powerful, darkly comedic film about loss, grief, and survivor's guilt. The cast includes Lee Pace, Matthew Beard, Paul Higgins, Rachel Jackson, Siobhan Redmond, Jamie Quinn, and Lesley Harcourt. This seems a bit wild & crazy but actually looks like an impressive debut. Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan definitely has her plate full. But like any talent in Hollywood, Gillan has spent years working hard to get that hard work, so that’s probably a prospect she meets with a lot of joy. Not only will she be directing her first film — the formerly-titled Tupperware Party (now currently untitled) — next year, but she’s also set to hit the big screen as an actor in the Marvel sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the adventure sequel/reboot Jumanji this year.
Gillan made her Marvel debut in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy as Thanos’ badass daughter, Nebula — a mean-spirited woman with a real chip on her shoulder. We last saw the blue belle ripping a man from his spaceship and taking off, far away from the climax chronicled in the movie. As with ninety percent of the surviving Marvel characters, she was...
