"Killer in Red" is an Italian 13-minute movie that is still very new, very fresh. It was released only a month ago (January 2017) I think and the writer and director here is Paolo Sorrentino, the man behind the Oscar-winning "La grande bellezza". On his more recent project, he worked with the likes of Michael Caine and Jane Fonda. So it is more than fitting that his journey into the world of Hollywood continues as he directs Clive Owen in this short movie. Owen (I never realized his nose was that big) is known for a lot of things. He is an Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner and he was considered to be the next Bond before Craig landed the role. He is also known for his BMW short films as even way over a decade later they are still somewhat defining for the genre. So it is certainly not a coincidence that Bacardi picked him to play the main character in this promo short. The film's title is a drink by the company. Sadly, it is not really working out. The story is as pretentious as confusing with Owen constantly shifting back and forth between being a customer at a bar and being the barkeeper. Many beautiful young women appear and they are basically all interchangeable. Clearly there was never any attention to make them memorable for anything other than their looks. You can't even blame the actresses as it is all about the way they were written. Then again, they are to blame for accepting roles like these. I guess they were fine with the probably decent payment and with appearing in a Sorrentino/Owen film. So yeah, overall it is a very blatant case of style-over-substance and I don't recommend checking it out. Disappointing and I am very glad it was this short as it would have been really painful to sit through for a 90-minute film perhaps and I probably would not have been so generous with my rating.
