  • In fact there are lots and lots of great aspects about the series... maybe it's a bit boring and slow from time to time but over all.... a 9/10 easily (so far from what i've seen) (i've made another review just forgot to mention how good and well fitting the music is so if u can edit/... my reviws imdb team plz combain this into what i wrote)

yeah the music's just a really good fit u know simple deep meaningfull and melodic... sounds really good fits the time and energy of the series... just right in place... (i definatly do not mean the musical scenes and poetry/singing/playing/anything like that without givingspoilers.... i mean the general soundtrack music)
  • Man i did not like the first episodes too much i found them to be well "avrage" but the series kept getting better... so far i haven't finished it yet but the improvment is great

one thing du is that while i won't give any spoilers there are lots of fillers boring moments and episodes full of basically dancing music and gossib not to mention beurocratic circle j***ing i won't say u should skip them because there's still character development and backstory but still a few episodes feel like all the substance could've been presented in 10 minutes..... that's really a drawback (also the effects aren't exactly great but personally i allways cared more about such things as the writing the acting the substance and narrative -which is great btw)

just.... i get it if u don't like the series start but give it some time
  • It is entertaining enough but too often seems contrived. Acting is overall good but characters personalities and moods seem to change to fit the plot. The plot development never had me caring for any of the players, but having said that it is worth a watch even though there are many better dramas out there.

100% entertaining, with laughter, action, sadness, some romance... a bit of everything. The best historical korean drama in my books.

This series has become one of my favorite Historical dramas. Loosely based on a legendary Hong Gil-dong, it kept me entertained, curious, sad, angry, frustrated, laughing out loud, and in awe of the production qualities. This also had a lot of "folk" dancing and actual singing by co-star, Lee Hanee. The sounds of that era is NOT my cup of tea so I would just grin and bear the female orchestra, who totally captivated the cruel King Yeonsang (Ji-seek Kim). The orchestral voices and piano scores that played throughout the series was VERY impressive. So we're the original songs. Bravo to all!!

The cast was excellent! Gil-dong (Yoon Kyun-Sang) was very believable and quite passionate in his love for family. He was strong as a leader of "7 merry thieves" and VERY tall (6'2"). It was perfect for the role of a "Mighty Child". But, casting Chae Soo-bin as the love interest (Ga-Ryun) was wrong in many ways: she looked like a teenager and she was way too skinny and short for Gong. Plus, calling him "brother" in the beginning was very awkward. Not her fault but the scriptwriter? The casting of the brotherhood of thieves was my personal highlight! I prayed none of them would die to the very end. Their love and respect for each other showed throughout - WITH NO FAIL. The amazing actor, Sang-Jung Kim, was my favorite of all. As the father of Gil-dong, Gil-Hyun and their little sister, he was OUTSTANDING!

So many more actors, directors, costumers, musicians to praise for their work...BRAVO, BRAVO!!!!
  • The name of this show should have been The Crybabies, because all they do is cry over every single little thing, especially the main character who spends the first 10 episodes balling his eyes out. The only thing I cried about was knowing what was going to happen to them before it ever happened. It was so predictable, sticking to the same old script where really evil and mean people with power does something horrible to the lowely peasants and their family or friends and so it goes back and forth with one getting the upper hand then the other while we set around waiting for the main character to finally come into his power and break bad on some noble asses and finally give them what they've had coming for 30 episodes.

The drama started off promisingly but took a nosedive after a pivotal moment around episode 7 when the plot took an unfortunate turn with the very conveniently timed amnesia break. This narrative choice not only broke the momentum built up until that point but also shattered the drama's coherence. After this abrupt twist, the series struggled to regain its footing, and the attempts to recover its initial momentum proved futile, leading to a disjointed narrative and a noticeable decline in quality. While attempting to portray the struggles of the oppressed, the series fell into repetitive cycles, as expected. The romantic elements felt forced and superficial. Rather than enhancing the storyline, the romantic subplot felt out of place and failed to integrate seamlessly into the overarching plot. It felt like they had to give the lead a girl, any girl. Would have been better if his siblings occupied that gap instead of being wasted on the love interest. At least the drama didn't end like Hong Gil Dong (2008).
