One of the best war films of all time in India

The first Indian submarine war film the tag is enough to pull the audience to the theaters but Sankalp Reddy doesn't want to disappoint the audience only with the tag line. Ghazi attack is one of the best patriotic films in the recent past.

Ghazi Attack is a great watch for a movie lover. From the word go it engulfs the audience, no commercial elements to boost the box office (Thank god). The first few minutes of the movie is enough to guess the story, but the screenplay plays the hero here.

A captain with 'attack first' mind, a rule breaking is offense kind of Lt.Commander, a good supporting second in command captain are great add. The first half was a bit slow comparing the second, but it doesn't bore.

The second half owns the whole movie. The war sequences are gripping; especially when the Indian submarine faces an uphill task the audience might feel the pressure (Though predictable).

Each move by the submarines, be it the Indian's or the Pakistani's will keep the audience hooked. The unusual situation and the way the soldiers come out of it were pictured well (Though a bit cinematic). The climax and the national anthem were enough for Goosebumps.

Cast performance: Cast selection was great, Kay Kay Menon as the Captain Ranvijay Singh has lived the role throughout the movie. Being a politically correct officer is not his cup of cake and he does it with ease. His acting and expressions plants him as one of the favorite characters form the movie.

His second in command Atul Kulkarni (Devaraj) was equally good. He scores in every frame he is present. Though his expressions are controlled he delivers what he has to. A perfect addition for the character.

Rana Daggubati as the Lt.Commander takes the back seat until the war is way out of hand. His expressionless face bores for sometime but once he takes the control of the submarine he excels both in war and in acting.

Tapsee Pannu doesn't have much screen presence, but justifies her role. She should have got a little more screen presence (after all she is the only female in the crew). All the other characters have done their part, but don't fit the navy dress.

Team review: Sankalp Reddy in his first directorial has impressed with a great story and a first of its kind movie. He has to relay mostly on his story and the cast in which he manages to excel. He didn't waste time in any unwanted songs or commercial elements (Kudos bro). Though he was given limited resources , he has done a great job.

K's music was the pulse of the story. His BGM creates a great cinematic experience. Cinematography by Madhie has another plus of the movie.

Thought the movie has few sidelines like the VFX it's a great attempt for a debut director. He manages to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie. The whole team needs a pat on the back for bringing in the first of its kind movie.

While leaving the theater everyone would feel proud of the country and the soldiers who die for the nation.

Ghazi Attack - a very watchable first-of-its-kind Indian Sea War movie!

Ghazi Attack is India's first underwater war movie based on a real encounter between warships of India and Pakistan during the war in 1971. But in the movie ships have been replaced with submarines, from both sides.

But the movie is totally fictional which just uses that encounter as an "excuse". Even the ending does not match with what may've actually happened to the Pakistani warship (a possible explanation is given after the End of the film) .

The Ghazi Attack is a simple but very watchable thrilling war movie.

MERITS of Ghazi Attack

1 - No melodrama. No meaningless songs. No unnecessary sub-plots. No Dialoguebazi.

It is a movie that sticks to the main point from start-to-finish.

This has to be stated explicitly - what with all the "bad habits" that Indian films are historically (in)famous for.

2 - The background music is thrilling and matches the foreground (or underground) activities.

3 - Visual effects are great! The Submarine scenes (below the sea and on the surface) are very realistic.

4 - Every film story thrives on some "relational conflict" or the other. The one between Rana Dagubatti (a law-abiding officer) and KK Menon (a rebellious captain who wants to do things his own way) creates the right tension in a sensitive war environment, that too well below the sea.

5 - The Pakistani Torpedo attacks on the Indian submarine is thrilling to watch! Edge-of-the-seat entertainment!

But I've NO interest in revealing the results of these attacks. Just go and see it for yourself.

6 - The official/technical dialogues between the crew members in the submarine sounds very realistic. And that is how it should be - not some airy-fairy self-created dialogues.

7 - The disaster that struck the inside of the Indian submarine, when it went too deep in the sea, is well-shot and looks realistic.

8 - Sankalp Reddy, in only his first Hindi film as a director has done a commendable job.

The DEMERITS of Ghazi Attack

1 - Tapasee Paanu's role is that of a mere "extra". She has nothing to do except utter a few lines, dress injured crew members and remain inside the submarine cabin with a child, after being rescued at sea.

That's it! 2 - The BLAST that followed the Pakistani torpedo attack on a Indian passenger ship did not look realistic at all. It looked very "video gameish"!

Builds up good but ends up being over-dramatised. Can be considered a one-time watch for the portrayal of an unsung pivotal incident just before the I971 Indo-Pak war

You don't get bored any time. You can enjoy more if you don't know the actual story. The movie builds up good till interval and runs parallel to history, but towards the later half, in process of adding thrill to the original story, the depiction becomes a bit unrealistic and hard to digest and ends up being over-dramatised! Nevertheless, the cast is great. KK Menon is once again phenomenal. Tapsee takes mannequin challenge into the movie. Rana plays fine. Conclusively, the movie can be called a one-time watch for the sake of portraying the pivotal mission triggering 1971 war.

Excellent movie and outstanding direction

First Indian movie that seems like Hollywood movie and this must be example to the change in Indian cinema.Excellent work done by debut director sankalp reddy, and proud that you are a telugu guy. you showed all the other directors in India, how a movie should be made.you can be role model to all the other debut directors.

The Ghazi Attack (2017): Indian films mostly depend on only 5 genres Action,Comedy,Drama,Romance and Horror.Thrillers are rare and don't even ask about science fictions and War films.Our Indians are the most patriotic citizens in the world but still there are very few films which showcased the true struggle of soldiers and there are still several unknown battles faced by our soldiers.The Ghazi Attack is one such film based on true events where our Indian Submarine S21 should fight the deadly submarine of Pakistan named Ghazi.

Plot: The film is set during the early 70's when Pakistan army sends a special submarine called Ghazi to help its soldiers who are fighting a war with Bangladesh. The only way that Ghazi can reach Bangladesh is through Indian waters and also by destroying the mighty Indian warship INS Vikranth which stands in its way.This news is carried on to the Indian authorities trough some crucial intelligence reports. In order to tackle the deadly Ghazi, the Indian navy deploys the S-21 submarine which is managed by Captain Ranvijay Singh (K K Menon) and officers like Arjun Varma(Rana Daggubbatti). Rest of the story is as to how the entire team of S-21 stay underwater for days and manage to fight the deadly Ghazi.

Plus Points:

1)Screenplay and Direction: One word which I can say is that Sankalp Reddy is a true gem for Indian Cinema.Even though this is his debut film,his skills in direction and writing are more brilliant than lot of experienced ones.He will probably go into the history of Indian cinema for pushing the boundaries of film making and directing a film with a unique script and spellbinding narration. The debutante scores high points for sticking to the story and treating the stars just as actors.There is not even a single moment where we feel bored.Every minute in this movie is gripping and especially second half of the film keeps you on edge of the seat.Especially the scene where they launch torpedoes is more scary than lot of horror films.

2)Performances: Ghazi has lot of talented cast in it and it really helped the movie a lot.Casting is the major pro.Kay Kay Menon has given a top class performance and he is the star of this film.Atul Kulakarni is brilliant too in the role of Officer Devraj.Rana should be applauded for backing up this project and with a stellar performance in the major role.Others like Satyadev gave awesome performances.

3)Art Direction: The major highlight of the movie is recreating the submarine. The detailing is remarkable. This is where the movie has scored.Special kudos should go to the art department for showcasing the submarine and its interior in a splendid way. Not once do you feel that the entire movie is filmed on a set.

4)VFX: According to me,Ghazi is the best technical masterpiece in India after Eega,Visual effects are awesome and are on par with Hollywood.Special mention should go to the VFX team who showcase the underwater scenes in a splendid way.

5)Cinematography: The cinematographer Madhie has given his best. The feel of being inside the submarine has come due to his framing and lighting. It is not an easy task to give such great output in a single location but Madhi gave his career best output.

6)BGM: BGM is very good and carried the feel of the movie whenever required.

So,The Ghazi Attack is one of the best Indian films of all time and should not be missed at any cost.A must watch film

The buzz around the movie was unmistakable. The attempt was first of its kind, and for once, everybody expected a tightly woven tale with worthy gfx in tow. But if one thought that even after a rich history and experience of producing movies since decades + advancements in affordable gfx will finally deliver a tout all time hit, those people need to think again.

The movie starts off nicely. First the baritone of Mr Bachchan, and subsequently the scene involving (Late) Om Puri and Nasser looked like the harbingers of a successful venture. The movie looked en route to a successful journey from the word go. Even after a few minutes had lapsed, one could sense that this is not going let up, as there was very less margin to do so. It had a dash of history, backing of good actors, and tech advancements on its side. But things started to nose dive soon.

While KK Menon looked set to deliver a powerful performance, and ditto for Mr Kulkarni as well, the talent available at hand was not utilized fully. Tapsee Pannu's role could have been managed via an anecdote. The direction just was not able to pull off a nerve wracking thriller expected out of it. Add to it the penchant to include queasy melodrama, and reluctance to learn from existing epic projects, all these became the undoing of a potential hit. There were moments where the direction could have been tighter, and some slick editing would have at least saved the day, but it seemed as if the movie tried hard to include the forced antics. The graphics are good, but do not hold a candle to the ones people are now accustomed to. The maker(s) must have been counting on the emotional + 'its one of a kind' sentiment to see the movie pull itself over the line.

Rana Daggubati does well in bit n pieces, but lacked the aura expected from a defense personnel. Making matters worse, the predictable nature of some of the key scenes stuck out like a sore thumb. They just had to bring in some clichéd stuff and forced suspense.

The audience is now much more mature, and the movie makers have repeatedly failed to acknowledge this fact. The dangerous trend of declaring a movie 'hit' based on box office collection and paid reviews may give such films a fake certificate of success, but unfortunately for the team, such movies will not morph quality-wise in the future and will be panned even more.

I expected a natural progression from the days of 'Lakshya', which was a brilliant movie, but was left sorely disappointed. The Ghazi Attack goes down not mainly due to the weight of a debutante director, but due to the act of pandering to the lowest common denominator.

The Ghazi Attack (2017) - Review

First review of the year, second month of the year and probably the most celebrated movie of the year not in terms of financial budget, but in terms of story line up. Since years, I saw lots of Hollywood movies on War on all three wings of Defense Forces. Famous Bollywood movies were, Border, Lakshya, LOC Kargil and many more (I don't remember much). All these years I was thinking why there is no movie based on Indian Navy and today I got the answer to this question. First thing first, few key points to be noted: 1. Well scripted story. 2. True patriotic movie, would have released on 26th Jan or 15th Aug. 3. Technicality of submarine is well explained on screen. 4. Hats off to VFX director who made look things utmost real. 5. Please appreciate the people who were involved in the development of submarine prototype.

Now not in detail, but overview on movie. The Ghazi Attack starrer Famous Kay Kay Menon (S21 submarine Capt. Rann Vijay Singh), Rana Daggubati (Lt. Commander Arjun), Atul Kulkarni (Exe. Officer Devraj) and Tapsee Pannu (Bangladeshi refugee). This movie is battling with two other simultaneous releases Running Shaadi & Iraada. This is the first Indian War film at Sea.

Movie starts with the ongoing civil war between East (Now, Bangladesh) and West Pakistan in 1971. As Pakistan wants to put firm hold on Bangladesh, they launch an offensive confidential mission to eliminate INS Vikrant. Few of the intercepts are decode which clearly indicated that Indian Navy will go for search operation only, not on attack mode. So S21 Indian Navy submarine was deployed to monitor the location at Bay of Bengal covering East coast of India. Hence during several search operations they detect nothing but yet they find PNS Ghazi is on some mission to Chittagong even though war wasn't declared from both the sides. So there was a tense situation of ethics, rule book theories and orders.

All characters, dialects, interior were so well crafted that there is mere possibility of finding mistakes. And yes audience of India, they take lots of time in accepting these kind of movies. Kay Kay Menon - superb, Rana Daggubati - making a mark, Atul Kulkarni - support to both mentioned characters, Tapsee Pannu - mere role but justifiable.

Defence forces implies on Leadership skills, Team work, Ethics, Valor, Confidence, Decision taker, Discipline and Patriotic. Because of these warriors only we could spend our day peacefully. Must watch movie for everyone. Movie making is an art, not a joke so respect it and appreciate it if possible. See it on big screen only not on your laptop or mobile devices. STOP PIRACY.

This is a good film. Flawed but still good.

Okay, all you haters. Personally, I think you're all idiots. This is a good film. And is riveting from start to finish. What stops it from gaining universal love is the last 10 minutes are an absolute disaster. It's like those Indian cricket team performances about 20 years ago. Tendulkar would hit a ton. But India would lose. In that sense the climax where Rana single-handedly launches a torpedo is ludicrous and destroys everything that the writers had built up until that point. It is this that creates the hatred from some people I think. All right Taapsee Pannu needn't have been in the film.

Now why I think this is a good effort is the until those last 10 minutes, Sankalp Reddy, in my opinion does string together a riveting tale. While his technique isn't that good of a Hollywood A-lister (this lack of technique results in the film not being as suspenseful as it should be)he still knows enough to keep the story chugging along. Also he's attempted a genre that no one has in the history of Indian cinema and he deserves all the praise he can get.

The film lacks a strong lead character and the protagonist duties keep shifting. Is it the captain played by KK? Is it Atul Kulkarni? Is it Rana? This lack of focus prevents the audience from forming the crucial empathy for the lead character which would have made everyone like this film. So while the film has momentum it lacks emotion - simply because we don't know or care who's involved. And here is where I come to the crucial mistake committed by the writer. They killed off their best character. The captain. And from then on it's a downward spiral held together only by the threat of the enemy submarine.

Because of this screenplay blunder the film ends up a like a sports car with a faulty clutch. It can move fast but the gear shifts jar. Resulting in a bumpy ride.

But still all you haters this ain't garbage. Far from it.

It's a good movie. Nowhere near great.

But maybe another director, a superhitmaker (yet to come), will deliver.

Truly deliver.

Until then, kudos to the team behind The Ghazi Attack

Shouldn't have been copies from CRIMSON TIDE

The history should be presented if you have done proper research.

But loosely copying the story of a Hollywood movie and presenting it as a history no one knows is pathetic.

The incident happened and there must be some records and people familiar with, but karan johar and team decided to go against it and prefer to copy a movie.

Great thrill !! I really felt to root for the heroes throughout the film !!

After a long time Bollywood gives such a well scripted, well acted and thrilling film.

I didn't go into the theater with much expectations. I was really surprised by the depth of script in terms of submarine warfare. I cannot say whether it was accurate or not, although it doesn't matter as which Hollywood films are accurate anyways. All they need is to fool the audience well enough.

Accurate or not the submarine warfare was really thrilling and was very well presented!!

And Thank God at least one director in Bollywood is enlightened enough not to put crappy songs in the film to bore the audience.

Engrossing story with expected ending

The Ghazi Attack talks about the war under water between India and Pakistan. The story is about how the attack on city of vizag was prevented by the armed forces.

Acting - The film includes veteran actors like Kay Kay Menon as the Captain, Atul Kulkarni and Late Legend Om Puri and Tapsee Pannu in lead roles. Top notch performances by all of them kept the audience engrossed till the end even though the first half was slow.

Music- The back ground music and use of the national anthem at appropriate time was a good effort by the music department

Direction - Sankalp Reddy as a debutant has done a great job by getting the required performances from the actors and a lot of great work expected out of him with such a start to his career.

Weakness- Tapsee Pannu's role could have been utilized better. Few scenes in the movie could have been avoided to make it more crisp.

Overall - Brilliance by Atul Kulkarni and great performances by the acting staff makes a predictable story a decent watch

Seldom do we have amazing war dramas made in India. The Ghazi Attack breaks the mould to give us an edge of seat, gripping movie. Not many know about this war and I'm among them. Though the movie is a work of fiction and the events have been dramatized, the premise is the same.

The movie has an ensemble cast consisting of Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni, Rana Duggabati. All 3 deliver power packed performance which add to the amazingness of the movie. We also get to see how a submarine works with detailed sets of the interiors of a submarine. Most of the other underwater scenes are courtesy special effects which are mildly average to be very frank. The movie is very tight with just a little over 120 minutes and does not feel stretched even a bit.

The movie beautifully shows the internal conflict in between the indian naval officers. It adds to depth of the film . Sankalp Reddy does a fine job considering this is his directorial debut. He lets the movie stay in its genre and does not indulge in mainstream elements to try and sell the movie. Patriotism and nationalism is high in the film as expected. The unique experience the movie offers being an underwater film is reason enough to watch it.

A certain dramatic thriller

This movie starts of with a very intense peace..

At the start the tension between Arjun and the captain is good.. At the very start it took us straight to the thrilling part of underwater. This movie has really great story line even most thrilling underwater war sequence. This movie has gave us that from the star to finish.

The characters are really well developed. The actors are good specially Kay Kay Menon as the captain kills it on screen.

Only Problem this movie has is the dialogues and some part of the screenplay which seems a little cheesy and more made-up type not a real story type.Rana Daggubati need to improve his acting a little more his dialogues doesn't seems believable. The character of Taapsee Pannu could have been played by anyone.

Other than that this movie gave us a incredible light somewhat of the true story of that day which is great..... 7.7/10.....

Copy from several Hollywood movies with no research at all

In all the excitement of recreating a major historical event, don't you think that the director or anyone involved could have done a basic research on the naval uniforms of both sides - at least the difference between those of Officers and Men. Here the Indian officers are seen with their shoulder boards as well as insignia of sailors. Commander of the boat also has a Petty Officers arm badge. Engineering, communication and other officer ranks also messed up. Plots shamelessly copied out of Crimson tide, Das boot, U 571 and Hunt for red October to name a few that I have watched. Why do they have to show the opposite number captain as "angry". The creators of such movies should stop taking us audience for granted

Thanks to the world of cinema, we get to hear so much of unknown stories which is stunning and yet nerve breaking. The Ghazi Attack is one such dynamic and encouraging story of our Indian soldiers fighting to save the country which was never heard of.

The Ghazi Attack tells the story of Indian men on board the submarine S21 when it is attacked by the Pakistani submarine, PNS Ghazi who intend to take out the city of Vishakapatnam from the map of India.

Directed by debutant, Sankalp Reddy, The Ghazi Attack is one such film which will keep you engaged right from the beginning till the electrifying climax. The powerful true story of our Indian Navi, The Ghazi Attack is the first Indian which talks about the submarine and the makers have done a fabulous job in portraying the stress, blood and sweat displayed by our honorable soldiers. Couple of scenes did caught my attention - Pakistani missiles missing the Indian submarine by few meters have been brilliantly portrayed. The interaction between Rana, Kay Kay Menon and Atul Kulkarni is one of the highlights of the film. Performances by each and every actor is mesmerizing, especially Kay Kay Menon and Atul Kulkarni.

Overall, a spellbinding tale of war which is cherished and witness on silver screen. Excellent 4/5

A good Indian movie on war.

To be really frank, I enjoyed the movie. There were certain reviews stating the movie was an insult to the naval forces. I found that, it was not the case. The movie was definitely appealing and patriotic.

Direction, Screenplay, story: Sankalp Reddy steals the show with this maiden attempt. The modification and the construction of this story (if any) are mind blowing.

Cinematography: To invest into cinematography, when it comes to such a movie where one knows it would run at most average is a tough decision. Yet the investment has been struck at proper angle turning out into great cinematography.

Tone: The tone that describes the movie is of naval defense in nature. The contrast thinking between officers is portrayed well. Singing out patriotic songs out loud in extreme conditions, add to the tone.

Music: Music is below average.

Acting: Acting is terrific.

Victory of the Tiranga

When was the last time Bollywood thought of not going by the winning formula of Song-dance-revenge formula or following the way of being over intellectual? The Ghazi Attack marks the beginning of a new era, heralded by the young directors like Sankalp Reddy. Tense from the word go, the movie is a captivating tale of patriotism,one's duty to his nation and victory at the cost of sacrifice.Throughout the movie you root for the Indian forces and for the tri-colour. Unfortunately this movie has not minted money like the way Bahubali or other movies have done.But for a connoisseur of movie, it is a wonderful gift. go and enjoy with your family.This is going to stay in your heart for long.

Excellent Movie. Everybody acted very well in the movie. The movie was so interesting at 1st half. The movie was somewhat lagged at 2nd half. The movie had many interesting scenes. The movie had an excellent VFX. This movie was one of the the best movie of 2017. The Tamil dubbing was good in the movie. Excellent Movie.

An insult to the INS

As a veteran of the U.S Navy and the son-in-law of a retired LCDR in the Indian Navy, I was appalled by this movie.

The technical aspects of submarine life as portrayed in this move are simply ludicrous. The list is endless, but here are four examples. 1) When a submarine employs active sonar (pinging), it immediately broadcasts its position to any and all who are listening. The proposition that an alert enemy would be unaware of the location of an active sonar source is absurd. 2) Torpedoes, even of that era, were not thunderous beasts, crashing through the water. They are streamlined, high-speed, killing machines that are as stealthy as the manufacturers can make them. 3) Seawater reaching the batteries, as shown in the move, would have released large amounts of poisonous chlorine gas and/or created an explosion sufficient to breech the hull and sink the boat. 4) During an active combat drill, members of the crew are shown at ease in the crew quarters. In a combat drill, every sailor has a combat station, and nobody would be idling about in their quarters.

Even worse, is the unprofessional and incompetent behavior imputed to members of the INS. The assignment of a psychologically unstable officer to command a submarine is unthinkable. Verbally bullying his subordinates, brandishing a pistol, drinking alcohol with his subordinates while on duty (and he was a Sikh!) - these are not qualities associated with anyone who would even be considered for submarine command. To state otherwise maligns the integrity of the admirals who commanded the INS in general and the submarine forces in particular.

Undoubtedly, there is a very interesting story to be told about the sinking of the Pakistani submarine, quite possibly involving bravery and heroism on the part of INS forces, but this movie is not that story. The lengthy disclaimer displayed on the screen and read aloud, in full, prior to the start of the movie, does not justify or excuse this collection of junk technology and transparent appeals to blind, unthinking patriotism.
