    Storyline

    Edit
After Peel airs his misgivings over wily French king Louis Philippe betrothing his son to Isabel, the Spanish infanta, fearing a Franco-Spanish alliance against Britain Victoria travels with her entourage to the French court to dissuade the king. She is frustrated by his refusal to discuss the reason for her visit and puzzled by the reluctance of Albert, to support her, until he admits to her Leopold's revelation and is reassured by her view that it changes nothing between them. As a result the pair form an entente cordiale whilst closet gay lovers Lord Alfred Paget and government aide Drummond enjoy a nude dip with Albert. However, on return to England , Victoria learns of the French king's duplicity though she does have a pleasant surprise for Albert. —don @ minifie-1

    Edit
    • Trivia
Harlaxton Manor in Harlaxton, Lincolnshire, was the filming location in lieu of the Château d'Eu in Seine-Maritime in France were Victoria and Louis-Phillipe actually met.
    • Goofs
The many many views of Victoria at her writing desk show her holding her writing pen in the way that was normal in the past, that is with the index finger aligned with the pen to guide it and the thumb and middle finger providing the support. In this episode especially Jenna Coleman is clearly jabbing at the writing paper in the non tutored style that resembles a monkey grip. This would have appeared barbaric to the real Victoria.
    • Quotes

Sir Robert Peel: Our ambassador in Madrid writes that the French are, as he puts it, "sniffing around the young Spanish queen". The Duke of Montpensier was there last week and he presented her with a zebra.

Victoria: What a curious present. I'm not sure I would have married you, Albert, if you'd given me such a thing. So inconvenient. And the poor beast. Coming all the way from Africa, it must find the climate most trying.

The Best Laid Plans or Victoria Goes to France
There are two focuses in this episode. The dominant one is a trip to France by Victoria to put off a marriage of convenience to the Queen of Spain. It would not be England's interest to have a union between France and Spain. So off goes the entourage to a foreign land. Louise Phillip is the king and he is blustery egoist. Victoria believes she can charm him into going along with her wishes. Meanwhile, Albert has been moping around, full of despair over the news he received at the funeral of his father. He feels amazingly alone, especially as he has kept his secret from his wife. There are some delightful moments in this episode, having a lighter theme. Enjoyable respite.
