Mr. Link recruits explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, this trio of explorers travel the world to help their new friend.
This movie interestingly had a much higher budget than all of Laika's previous movies. Their first four movies had budgets of around $60 million, while this movie had a budget of $100 million. It's possible the bigger cast, filled with more well-known actors and actresses compared to their previous movies, resulted in the higher budget.
Sir Lionel Frost:
A map of the United States is shown in the film. It shows several states which weren't yet states as of the film's 1886 setting (for example, Arizona didn't become a state until 1912).
At the end of the closing credits, the Laika production logo displays tributes to its previous films (as the previous Laika film Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) did), but Mr Link himself joins the logo: he is seen walking through trees.
