This is one of the best Indonesian movie I've ever watched. The cast, the plot, the comedy, the drama, they are packaged in a very good way. This movie fells like a roller coaster, you'll laugh out loud at some moment, and fell like gonna cry in few minutes after. I'm looking forward for Ernest Prakasa next movie from now on. (I'm sorry for my bad English :D)

rgamawann22 September 2017Cek Toko Sebelah is a film written and directed by a talented young comedian, Ernest Prakasa. It tells us a story of a Chinese family and their problems in life, ranging from work-related problems, romance, inheritance, and jealousy. Centered on Ernest as the main actor himself, the story bring about a nice familial atmosphere and well-presented the interaction between various cultures and kinds of people in Indonesia. As the comedian's second movie, it was being widely accepted by the audience and received many good responses from them, although there are some minor problems that we need to look up into.
My own first impression when I watch this movie is, honestly, quite bad. The jokes are quite lame, and the movie seems like a boring one with too much jokes in it. However, as the story progresses, it's getting better and better. The delivery of the plots is well-executed and the emotion in it is being build up perfectly for the audience. Oh, and the jokes are getting better too!
Now, when we see the actors and actresses line up, we would be surprised to see quite a few well-known names such as Dion Wiyoko (Yohan), Adinia Wirasti (Ayu), Gisella Anastasia (Natalie), and various other famed names. Sadly, however, most of them lacked the expected screen time befitting of their popularity. The background of each main characters is also quite lacking in our opinion, making the audience failed to relate the story to an even deeper level. Well, allocating a proper screen time for each plot is hard, with the need of jokes and all in a comedy films especially, so the present condition is quite well done.
Overall, it is a good movie, and I recommend you to watch it. Why? Well, it is quite rare for an Indonesian comedy film to get this deep of a plot, especially in the recent times. Not sure? You will know when you watch the movie yourself. Prove it. Prove my words, watch the movie. -
unhealthyobsession21 October 2020Earnest Prakasa is a brilliant storyteller. The premise is very simple, and yet it is what makes the storyline relate-able. A story about the ups and downs of each family members, each character can resonate with the audience in some way.
With excellent comedic performances by the actors and great writing, Cek Toko Sebelah addressed real social issues in a light-hearted approach -- yet it did not take away from the message.
Cek Toko Sebelah is a great movie to add into your Indonesian repretoire. -
imdberc7 February 2017I am a movie-lover person that mostly watch Hollywood movies and it is very rare for me to find Indonesian movies that suit to my criteria. But, this film give me some insight that Indonesian movies are very good, too. Because of the intriguing title and many positive reviews from my relatives, I decided to watch this film and can't wait no longer to know whether this movie is like what the positive reviews said. Yeah, and it was EXCELLENT! It has comedy, romance, drama and many cameos from well-known Indonesian celebrities (I was quite amaze when I seen the cameos). Additionally, this movie also gives some life lessons that we can learn. I hope excellent Indonesian films like this is not come out rarely and I pray for the future of National film production to make many and many excellent movies!

Recommended going with your Family especially your father. Thank you So much with your movie can inspiring from this Movie I hope Indonesian Movie Industry will make a film better and better like this. Nice Works! ini_ynti-2245726 October 2017Well, I never thought this movie would be so damn funny. Thank God I finally decided to watch this one. It's such a great stress relief from work. This movie provides a great stock of laughter from beginning to end, even in small details when you did pay attention to it, such as the logo of products. That was quite entertaining. Not only laughter, this movie also delivers a great story about family which, in certain scene, moved me to tears. How could I not when I watched that part with such a perfect song?
I have to be honest I never knew any work from Ernest Prakarsa unless that he is a stand up comedian. I also heard that he's written a book, a comedy book or something like Raditya Dika. As one of main actors here, I think he acted pretty good. What Giselle did also quite surprising. That was pretty natural, except when she yelled in English language near the end of the movie. That was not so good. Over all, it's a great movie about family with great casts and great original songs. What disturbed me a bit is the details about the calendar shown pretty often. That's all. -

The Father, a victim of 98 tragedy find it a struggle accepting daughter in law. But the movie also observe the perspective of younger generation that dont dwell on past pain, and brings new energy of optimism. The story delve deeper with younger son need to decline his father offer to take over the business while also wanting to be a good responsible member of the family. This is a real family issues that the movie brings with grace, fun and easy to enjoy and understand. A triumph for indonesian movie making and a wonderful new perspective of indonesian diversity.

Some of the scenes are heartouching like koh Afuk becomes ill because both of his son fighting over the jaya baru stores. Some of the scenes are funny as well and each of characters are unique in the movie because their showing strange and funny personality like koh Amiau where he likes to touch his armpits and other acting like a sissy.

bram_yohanes14 June 2017This is my first Indonesian movie I watched in cinema and it was awesome. It represents daily life of Indonesian people in good way. Well, in Indonesia, especially in Java island we has a lot of ethnic groups live together, like Javanese, Sundanese, Chinese, Bataknese, Betawinese, Arabians, Indians, and so on. The cultural richness is described by the characters of the movie. Ernest's life represents Chinese family with kid's specific problem in real life: choose a job. He must choose to become a successful businessman or inherit his father's small shop. At this moment, Ernest took a break for some weeks because of his promotion into his new office and then he try to work at his father's shop. Beside that, he still has an older brother who was an unemployment. This is a simple movie which managed very well. The story is funny, it has a lot of comedy sessions, but at the same time it is very touching. So, I am sure that this is one of the best Indonesian movie I had ever seen.

I watch this at disney plus coz i got a free subs. Just bored and dont know what to do. Thus i watch this movie coz one of the scene is pretty popular, and then, Boom. I watched a good movie, with plenty of undeniably good joke with a quite Story. Yeah just good.
