In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.
Good for Richard Osman, it all seems to be very going well for him. But for Pointless?
Taking its cue from satirical current affairs show Have I Got News For You?, which settled on a revolving carousel of guest hosts when its regular host Angus Deayton was forced to step down instead of plumping for a permanent chair, Pointless has welcomed a series of co-hosts in the past couple of years.

After becoming an Academy Award winner in 2021, Brad Pitt has launched three new careers: amateur treasure hunter, “The Great Pottery Throw Down” fan club leader, and now professional sculptor.
The “Bullet Train” star unveiled nine sculptures at a Finnish art museum, the Sara Hildén Art Museum, as part of a larger exhibition by British artist Thomas Houseago and a ceramic series by Australian musician Nick Cave. To note, Pitt’s longtime collaborator, director Andrew Dominik, has helmed two Cave documentaries.
“For Nick and I this is a new world and our first entry. It just feels right,” Pitt told Finnish broadcasting company Yle at the opening ceremony (via The Independent).
Pitt, billed as a “largely self-taught” artist, explained his pieces are part of his emotional rebirth.

Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. has commissioned 149 hours of new and returning lifestyle shows in the U.K.
The programs include “The Big Body Clinic,” “The Edinburgh Auction House” and “Charlotte Church’s Dream Build,” and will air on Discovery’s stable of U.K. linear channels. They will also be made available on streaming service Discovery+.
The sheer volume of unscripted commissions for Warner Bros. Discovery’s linear channels in the U.K. sends a clear signal that the unscripted pipeline for the combined Discovery+ and HBO Max platform — when it does eventually launch — will largely stem from the Discovery side of operations.
Discovery+ launched in the U.K. in November 2020, but HBO Max has yet to roll out, due to the legacy output deal between HBO and Sky, which sews up the vast majority of HBO and some HBO Max content for Sky channels and its SVOD service Now TV.

Get ready for Brad Pitt to recreate that famous “Ghost” scene.
The “Bullet Train” star professed his love for British reality competition series “The Great Pottery Throw Down” during an interview with Joe.ie. The video interview soon became a lovefest for British television with co-stars Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson weighing in.
When the trio was asked what their favorite explosive escapist films are to watch, Taylor-Johnson gushed over Pitt’s “Fight Club.” Meanwhile, Pitt cited Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” as a recent “musical explosion,” to which co-star Henry added “The Great British Baking Show” is one of his favorite binges.
“Let me tell you something, when those soufflés explode, man, you watch some stuff go down,” the “Atlanta” star joked.
Pitt responded, “Well, if we’re going that route, I’m going ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down,'” with a surprised Henry saying, “Brad! How come we’ve never talked about this?...

What is going to happen to the unscripted department at HBO Max? It’s a question that the TV industry had been asking before Discovery and WarnerMedia even tied the knot in April to become Warner Bros. Discovery. But after recently crossing the 100-day post-merger-mark and approaching the company’s second quarter earnings reveal next Thursday, the question is being raised more and more by those outside and within the David Zaslav-run company — which has more cooks in its unscripted programming kitchen than it needs — especially if it’s still intent on hitting its promised 3 billion cost-saving synergies over the next three years, and working to reduce its approximately 55 billion debt load on a market cap of 36.3 billion.

The latest season of Channel 4’s “The Great British Bake-Off” has gone down like a deflated soufflé with U.K. viewers.
Season 12 launched on Tuesday night with an audience of only 5.7 million — its lowest ratings yet since moving from BBC to Channel 4, industry outlet Broadcast reported.
It marks a dramatic decline even from last year, when the show’s season 11 finale set records for Channel 4 with an average audience of 9.2 million viewers, making it the highest-rated Channel 4 show since records began in 2002.
The latest season will air in the U.S. on Netflix on Sept. 24.
Tuesday evening’s numbers were not helped by the fact that some viewers trying to watch the episode online were met with a “technical error” on the Channel 4 streaming platform All4.

Just days after the Television Academy announced the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Award nominees, where the Apple TV Plus comedy picked up 20 nods and therefore became the most-nominated freshman comedy in that organization’s history, it scooped up five TCA Awards nominations, the most for any series celebrated by the Television Critics Assn. (TCA) this year.

Mere days after the TV Academy announced the nominations for the 2021 Emmy Awards, the Television Critics Association — made up of more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists — shared its own batch of nominees for the 2021 TCA Awards.
This year, the TCA embraced new shows and limited series with Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” leading the way with five nominations, including nods for Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Program of the Year, along with recognition for both Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham for Individual Achievement in Comedy.
HBO Max’s breakout comedy hit “Hacks” was hot on Lasso’s heels with four nominations, also garnering recognition in New Program, Comedy, and Program of the Year, as well as a mention for star Jean Smart. Also nabbing four nominations were three of the season’s standout limited series: HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and “Mare of Easttown” along with Disney+’s “WandaVision.

You better believe: “Ted Lasso” led Thursday’s 37th Television Critics Association Awards nominations with five bids, including Program of the Year, in the awards’ largest slate of nominees yet.
All 13 categories have expanded from six nominees to eight (variety series has nine nominees) this year, five years after they were expanded from five slots to six. For the top prize, “Ted Lasso” will duke it out with “Bridgerton,” “Hacks,” “I May Destroy You,” “Mare of Easttown,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Underground Railroad” and “WandaVision.”
Fresh off 20 Emmy nominations, “Ted Lasso” also earned TCA nominations for comedy series, new program and two in the Individual Achievement in Comedy category for Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham.
Four shows scored four nominations apiece: “Hacks,” “I May Destroy You,” “Mare of Easttown” and “WandaVision.” These four are all up in Outstanding New Program against, as aforementioned, “Ted Lasso,” “Bridgerton,” “The Flight Attendant” and “P-Valley.

Love Productions USA (The Great American Baking Show) is set to produce Rhino Reboot, a series following the rebuilding of perennial underdog soccer team, The Rochester Rhinos, after sealing a deal with newly announced co-owners Jamie Vardy and David and Wendy Dworkin.
The Rhinos, a club that has struggled to find itself and establish a winning streak, last played professionally in the 2017 Usl season, but are anticipating a turnaround as they gear up for action in 2022.
The series will document the growth of the franchise as global football phenom Vardy and the Dworkins fill senior roles, including identifying a head coach and chief business officer, sourcing talented young local players who haven’t yet played at the competitive level, and trying to build a team both on and off the pitch. Rhino Reboot will have unfettered access to management, the coaching team, the owners, players and backroom staff. Vardy was...

The Sunset Tower is getting ready for Oscar night. Owner Jeff Klein tells me that freshly minted winners will be treated to dinner if they come in after the show with their statuettes. The public can also book a meal at the hotel, and rooms are available for private Covid-safe viewing parties. Options range from four people in a deluxe king suite with Champagne, popcorn and movie candy to a sit-down dinner for 15 in a townhouse or penthouse. Plus, Klein is doing away with the hotel’s no-photo policy for the night so guests can share their evening in social media if they’d like. And it looks like swag suites are back. The Gbk Brand Bar & eOn Hand Sanitizing Mist lounge just sent out a release that it will be handing out freebies on April 21 in West Hollywood. Attendees will have to take a rapid Covid test before entering the suite.

Looks like Tom Hiddleston won’t be taking much of a break from the small screen after Loki. The actor has joined Claire Danes in the forthcoming Apple TV+ period drama The Essex Serpent, TVLine has learned.
Based on the bestselling novel by Sarah Perry and set in Victorian England, the series centers on Cora (Danes), a widow recovering from an abusive marriage who moves from London to the small village of Aldwinter and becomes “intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.” Hiddleston will play Will Ransome, the...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety“…
Rupert Grint may have co-starred as Ron Weasley in all eight “Harry Potter” movies, but he hasn’t actually watched most of them. “I’ve probably seen the first three at the premieres, but after that I stopped watching them,” Grint, 32, tells me from his home in the U.K. “But now that I have a daughter [Grint’s wife, actor Georgia Groome, gave birth to baby Wednesday in May], I will probably have to watch them with her.” Speaking of the hit franchise, Grint says he doesn’t expect to be a part of the “Harry Potter” series being developed by HBO Max. “It’ll be weird if it was a continuation kind of thing,” he says. “I weirdly feel quite protective of that character. Even when I saw the stage shows, it was a very strange experience. … If it’s like a different group of friends,...

From launch, critics dogged HBO Max about its higher pricing, the lack of access via Roku — and most of all, the apparent dearth of must-see shows that would make the streamer essential instead of one more platform among so many. Last summer, the complaints were still fresh when HBO Max announced a slate of international acquisitions: There, next to “The Great Pottery Throw Down,” was “Gomorrah.” All four seasons, companion movie “The Immortal,” and a fifth season to come. An Italian mafia drama didn’t get much attention; it wasn’t the stuff of corporate strategy.
But “Gomorrah” is much more than a quirky streamer pickup. For its Italian producer, Cattleya, “Gomorrah” sparked a trend in gritty, real-world storytelling that reshaped Italian TV. Beta Film — a company founded to exploit Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” — licensed “Gomorrah” in nearly 200 countries, and it became one of the most successful properties in its history.

When you’re 12 the main thing you want to be is 13. You’re desperate to be older. Desperate to grow up. This feeling is particularly acute when you have older siblings. (I’m the youngest of three.) You see them doing exciting teenage stuff like going to the pub and watching inappropriate films and you think: “I want a piece of that.” Since any attempt to join them in the pub was rightly met with an invitation to “sod off”, watching inappropriate films it was.
