  • This would have been a great 50 minute episode of The Twilight Zone, but as many of the reviews here say, it drags in middle. Good acting, nice FX, but not enough of a story to carry the running time.
  • Warning: Spoilers
"Fast Color" is a story about mother and daughter relationships, the only thing is each of them have supernatural skills to manipulate weather and matter. At the one point in the film, one of characters, "Ruth" played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw says, "We are not superheroes ... we are just trying to get by."

At a recent film festival Q/A session, Jordan Horowitz (co-wrote the screenplay) and Mbatha-Raw explained that the story is not trying to follow the current Hollywood trend of making violent and action-packed films about super heroes with powers to destroy or help humankind. It looks into the idea of women, in this case... women of color trying to empower each other, after they all suffered from an emotional trauma due to Ruth's powers becoming unstable.

Lorraine Toussaint, who play Ruth's mother, "Bo" does a wonderful job of helming the powered-up matriarch by trying to suture the broken relationship between her granddaughter and Ruth.
  • Not a bad movie, this has a good cast and I love anything about people with super abilities, But this one really is a slow burner that fails to take off..i would say there are but a few moments in the whole movie and the very end is good but could have been Great...The director never gives it its wings...Pity.. great actresses here who arent given enough to work with..I actually dozed off during it, yeah, its That slow...If you are looking for Incredible displays of otherworldly power you will be dissapointed...If ur looking for a brisk pace that keeps you on the edge of ur seat, this is Not it.. You would better enjoy an episode of Heroes.... A decent movie though that could have been a Great one!
  • My wife and I watched this at home on DVD from our public library.

It is set in an unspecified place at an unspecified time, it could even be a fictional parallel universe. A running theme is that water is very scarce, crops are drying in the fields, rain is badly needed, towns are becoming ghost towns.

British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw (I love that name) is the lead character Ruth who must go on the run because of some incidents resulting from her "gifts" that we eventually learn run in the women of that family, passed on to each new generation. We meet both her mother and her young daughter.

It is hard to say what the story is really about. It isn't clear what their "powers" can accomplish, but we mostly enjoyed the movie as an entertaining 100 minutes. It appears that the ending set up for a sequel and in fact I read that Amazon has begun to make a series that probably will be available on Amazon streaming.

The filming was done in New Mexico and the small, dusty town is Estancia. Online maps street view clearly show the Blue Ribbon Bar, for example.

Pretty good movie, if you don't expect too much.

Recent years have shown a surge in superhero movies. Yet while most of them are "popcorn movies", there are also a few that try to change the formula a bit and go into different genres alltogether. Like this one, which may be described more like a drama than a movie that is there to just plain entertain you. Now I do feel that other superhero movies tackle social issues too - their main goal is to entertain or please fanboys though.

Acting is rock solid in this and the movie really has some interesting twists and turns throughout. The special effects also work really well in it. They are not that many, but when they appear on screen ... no pun intended, but let's say you won't be dissapointed. The story may or may not work for you, but is quite stellar - if as slow as it gets, which again may be something you either appreciate or are annoyed by.
  • This slowly unfolding dystopian film offers a fresh and original take on the superpowers theme. But you'll need patience, as this is more of a quiet and cerebral film than the usual action laced type movie in this genre.

Fine performances here from Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Lorraine Toussaint as two women who have been gifted with the supernatural abilities, as part of a generational line of women in their family. But in a world which has had no rainfall for 8 years and is dying out, and where Federal Agents fear what these abilities can do, there may be no safe place for them.

Although I thought some of the elements here were nonsensical, once it all started coming together I found it quite engaging and interesting, and, as mentioned, offered a different slant on this type of movie.
  • I love the main actor, actually all the main characters. Something felt like it was missing. The 'baddies' were somehow made redundant. Why were they chasing the her? The first scene baffled me. She exhibited powers to escape from what? Or who? In some way the plot felt the wrong way around. It was enjoyable but not great. Worth a watch.
  • What we have here is good story-telling. It is as simple as that. Add people who possess powers, hidden secrets, and the lure of what those powers are and what they can do. The movie may cause you to ask what would you do with these powers? Before you boast a perfect answer everything comes with a hitch in life. So you may use these powers but at what cost? Will others just stand still while they watch you do what you do? The old "what's in it for me" kicks in and that is why the premise of secret powers is so powerful. People with them hide them. Superman and his alternate Clark Kent is a good example as is Batman and Bruce Wayne and Spiderman with Peter Parker. Powers have a way of their own and learning to live with them and by them is not so easy. Of course you will say no problem and let me have them. Well, watch the movie then. Also pay attention to whatever is happening in this movie as it can be controlled or corrected and at some point this may dawn on you or not. There was a Twilight Zone about a boy with powers to do most anything which this story may stir up in your memory. The kid was a brat however and in the remake not so much or at least reachable. Here those with the power are still learning but hiding as they do. Interesting concept. It does entertain however

I do have respect for all those trying to make movies based on supernatural forces, including use of visual effects. this film has it all, not too much and not the kind that will blind you by the light, just pure magic that dissolves or appears in front of your eyes with a very well adjusted score, lifting these sequences sky high.

its a film about 3 women and their abiløities, grandma, ma and daughter, living somewhere beyond the frontiers in a dried out place somewhere in the united states. the ma is on the run from a group of people wanting to test her , so its a bit cat and mouse hunting.

the filmo are great with some lovely scenic views, its well edited, and the special effects are good. the story and plot are a bit slow, and underdeveloped, i felt like sitting and waiting in between the supernatural stuff for more, but it didnt, thats a drawback.

acting are nice, specially the main female actress with the difficult name were good, and that goes for the other 2 mainroles. i guess there will be a sequel to come in the future, because the message at the end says, there are more of you,go find them.

  • Starts well and promisingly, but in the second half you quickly realise that there is nothing more to the story. The film lacks a good and intelligent developed fantasy or sci-fi idea. Thats why the film is quite boring and unsatisfying.
  • Movies like this make the little kid come out in me. Nice pace, good acting and imaginable. Great family movie for all ages. Just remember this is fiction/fantasy don't over-analyze, enjoy the ride.
  • I would have been surprised NOT to see David Strathairn, as this unique story fits him perfectly. Although Julia Hart is inexperienced as a writer and director, the same can not be said for Jordan Horowitz-and I was expecting a lot more than what we received. The screenplay is pretty much half-baked and needed to stay in the oven a little bit longer. There are many moments in Fast Color that were just not thought out all the way, leaving the viewer bewildered as to how and when and why things come about within the film. The ending was a complete disappointment-again, this is a screenplay that was not put to the test before going to production.
  • A stronger plot and character development was needed. It would have given me a stronger impression of the super natural and a higher rating.
  • I did not find this movie slow at all and I thought the movie told the story really well. It is not a Marvel movie or an action movie, it has so much character and the situation of what is going on is implied, not spelled out. I really enjoyed it and I really hope there is a sequel.

The production is like a soft version of X-men. During an 8 year drought, Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw ) is 11 months sober and has seizures which cause tremors. The Feds are after her. She returns home, a bit unwelcome, and we discover that her mom and daughter likewise have gifts. The film becomes a drama of their life with a sci-fi fantasy background.

What really made the film was the young girl Lila (Saniyya Sidney ). Her role was interesting.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
  • This is a very interesting and compelling mix of drama and fantasy. The great acting delivered by 3 amazing actresses spanning 3 generations turns this simple albeit intelligent plot into a delightful experience. One through which we can all feel for the main characters and step into their shoes. As some of the other reviews in here already mentioned, the script is a bit far from perfect. For instance, the government men are a somewhat pitiful caricature, lacking any semblance of character, and the sheriff character also lacks more development, but overall this is a very nice movie and I would like to see more like this. Last but not least, I can't help but stress the fact that the lead and the child actresses are absolutely amazing. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is so photogenic I bet she can even look good in surveillance footage. The little Saniyya Sidney is so cute she almost makes me wish I had kids. The rest of the cast turns out ranging from "good" to "good enough". Finally, extra points must be awarded for the central role of Punk Rock, in the incarnation of X-Ray Spex. If you don't watch this movie, at least go and listen to X-Ray Spex!

Fast Color: The near future, it hasn't rained for 8 years, Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) has extraordinary powers and is being pursued by government agents. She starts to have seizures and causes earthquakes, her powers were subdued by her drug and alcohol use, but now that's she's sober she will have to learn again to control them. She returns to her home where both her mother Bo (Lorraine Toussaint) and daughter Lila (Saniyya Sidney) have telekinetic powers. It's not an original story, both cinema and tv screens have been overrun with tales of Mutants with ESP talents lately. But the story unfolds in an interesting manner here, we see Lila practicing, developing her skills. Ruth attempting to hone and direct her own powers, while Bo claims that she herself is only capable of parlour tricks. Ruth also has to rebuild a relationship with Lila. In the background there is the constant danger of all three of them being seized by federal agents. A Science Fiction story about superhuman powers being passed down through many generations in the same family. Written and directed by Julia Hart. 7/10. On Netflix.
  • "Fast Color" 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠 Starring the beautiful Gugu M-Raw I was delighted to see her as the lead. A very talented actress who did a good job in this film but a few scenes felt redundant and forced on her part. All around the actors were above par in this one but the story's progression lacked cohesion at times. The pace was all over the place and with a movie about super human abilities there is no reason for 75% of the storyline to be boring. It also was way under developed. Actors were just blurting out past memories to fill in obvious plot holes. The adversaries had no back story's so we have no idea what the bad guys are trying to accomplish. We know nothing about the lead characters past except a few details that don't go into any specifics, I mean if this were a TV series with 10 more episodes then it would of been better because character development was totally non-existent for this film. Special FX were ok but the usage was far and in between I felt as though the budget wasn't equipped to perform too many parlor tricks which in turn forced many needed scenes to be cut or never filmed. Very predictable and the mystery was futile the characters were not surprising as to who they were or their intentions. The ending was a little tacky and didn't feel heroic at all, I had no emotional connection to any of the characters so the on screen antics at the end felt phony and contrived. Not a bad film to watch it definitely had some substance but it never made it to the destination it was heading for.
  • This movie had surprising talent and emotional acting. I did not expect to be wrapped up like I did with this story... Definetly a refreshing twist on the "superhero" genre. I really hope that Amazon kves forward with the series that is in development. This new world they've created has a plethora of avenues to explore and directions it can go in. Very cool, very exciting.
  • The characters are so appealing that the enjoyment which comes from spending time with them doesn't require more action or a quicker pace.

Fast Colour film is for me, a very difficult one to write a review because I don't even know how to review. So, I only write as much as I know.

The film is very different from those films I've normally seen. Mostly because I don't quite understand it's concept. I get that she has the ability that normal people don't have. And for those other people who have those abilities, those all are very different from one another. It's like mutants' abilities from X-Men film. What I don't get is that what it does have to do with the colours? If they could've done a simple thing like they have abilities to do very different awesome things, it might turn out to be a fine film. But when they've mixed with colours thing, it sort of becomes very confusing state. I guess they want it to be different from X-Men, so, they've added that unnecessary colour thing.

I found it the film was somehow so boring. I was about to fall asleep when I watched it. Maybe because I was feeling sleepy. 😂 That's the reason why this film couldn't keep me awake. 😁 All those talking is so dull. And also the screenplay is not that much good. I think they should've improved somehow to make it colourful.

Talking about screenplay, I should also mention that the end part is quite ridiculous. I mean they are catching them (the ones with abilities) because the world is ending. As much as I understand the story, the reason is no rain in that region. So, no water and they can't plant anything. Hence, the world is ending. It leads to the state where they are trying to find a way to save it. In the end scene, they got the rain. So, what's the benefit of detaining Bo? If they afraid they wouldn't get rain at the later time, they could've make some agreement with them. They don't really need to capture anyone. That's why I said it's quite ridiculous.

The acting is quite fine. But the score is very loud. I had to adjust the volume level all the time. It's really annoying. That being said, the score is very harmony to the film. I give you that.

All in all, it might be very good film to enjoy for you. But for me is that it's a boring, somehow ridiculous and the plot is too simple. If they could add some awesome things and make it less boring, yeah, this film will turn out to be a fine one.

Sometimes you need to watch a movie that doesn't appeal to your nature. Well this is a feel good movie in its own right. If you aren't smiling at the end then I feel badly for you...
  • The vibrant and lovely tones of colours just skips over your mind and makes u go lost in their world of fear and beauty
