Three decades ago, Tina Turner reclaimed her history with the soundtrack album for the movie What’s Love Got to Do With It. She re-recorded hits she’d originally cut with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner so that they could stand on their own as testaments to her survival. These included “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” and “A Fool in Love.” She was in her early 50s, her voice still sounded great, and the album became a hit. Now, the record will be even bigger when it’s reissued on April 26 as an expanded box set.

Music legend Stevie Wonder led the charge as stars paid tribute to the music legends the world lost last year at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
He kicked off the ceremony’s annual ‘In Memoriam’ segment by paying tribute to his late friend and fellow musical icon, Tony Bennett, who died in July 2023 at age 96, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“I remember hearing Tony Bennett singing ‘For Once in My Life’ when I was like 13 or 14 years old,” Stevie, 73, began the tribute. “But what’s amazing is I was able to actually sing the song with someone that I admired for so long, not just because of his voice, which was incredible, but because of his art, his love for art, his love for peace, his love for unity, his love for civil rights.”

Oprah says that there is no bad blood between her and The Color Purple actress Taraji P. Henson, who has over the past few weeks shared her poor experiences with things like pay and on-set accommodations on the film, as well as other projects.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Winfrey addressed online speculation over Henson’s treatment on the film after the award-winning actress opened up about her pay equity struggles while on the press tour for The Color Purple. Winfrey, who is a producer on the film and appeared in the original 1985 non-musical version directed by Steven Spielberg, told the outlet she “heard I was trending yesterday” after more comments from Henson, this time in The New York Times, about transportation to set and trailers while filming the movie.
“People are saying that I was not supporting Taraji. Taraji will tell you herself that I’ve been the greatest champion of this film.

There’s a reason the word honors is in the title. To help celebrate the lifetime contributions of artists in music, dance, theater, opera, movies and TV, the Kennedy Center Honors routinely pay tribute to its recipients by rewarding them with memorable performances.
Scores of artists have been feted since the Honors got their start in 1978, but there are certain tributes that remain sketched in our hearts forever. In anticipation of the 46th annual event honoring Billy Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick on Dec. 27, we look back at some of the show’s most unforgettable performances — starting with Lenny Bernstein’s opening speech from the very first Kennedy Center Honors, of course.

Taraji P. Henson broke down in tears during a SiriusXM interview with Gayle King while promoting her new film, “The Color Purple.” King asked the Oscar and Emmy-nominated actor if she was still thinking about quitting acting, which King had heard rumors of Henson previously saying. Henson responded by revealing she has hit her breaking point in Hollywood since she continues to be underpaid.
“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,” Henson said. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ Well, I have to. The math ain’t math-ing. When you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone. It’s a whole team behind us.

With more than 20 years on the air, American Idol continues to be one of the most popular singing competition series of all time. Every year, thousands of young singers fight for a chance to be the next idol. But who can blame them? After all, stars such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Adam Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson got their big break on this show.
In addition to great singers, American Idol has given its audience plenty of drama. One of the best examples is the on-screen feud with Nicki Minaj that led Mariah Carey to quit the show and avoid talking about her time on American Idol in interviews. Most recently, American Idol is going viral after a former contestant announced that she wants to sue the show for breaking labor laws and mistreating competitors behind the scenes.

Simply the best. On Sunday night, Patti Labelle paid tribute to her late friend and musical icon, Tina Turner, with a soul-stirring performance during the BET Awards.
Labelle took the stage to honor the incomparable Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, paying tribute to the late Turner with a rendition of “The Best.” Wearing a sparkly fringe minidress reminiscent of Turner’s signature style, the Godmother of Soul showed off her powerhouse vocals as she belted out the song’s lyrics — but not without a stumble here and there as she struggled to keep up with the teleprompter used to guide her through the song’s entirety.
Although Labelle’s vocals were solid, she admitted she wasn’t able to see the lyrics on the teleprompter throughout the tribute, telling the crowd, “I can’t see the words and I don’t know. I’m tryin’, y’all!”

In the opening of Tina and Ike Turner’s rendition of Creedance Clearwater’s “Proud Mary,” Tina gives a disclaimer to the audience: “Every now and then I think you might like to hear something from us nice and easy, but there’s just one thing, you see: we never ever do nothing nice and easy.” When Angela Bassett took on the task of portraying Turner in 1993 for “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” she took that to heart.
In the 30 days between landing the role and the first day of shooting, Bassett worked 16-hour days, exercising each morning before learning dance numbers with Turner and choreographer Michael Peters. Bassett also worked with her co-star Laurence Fishburne to act scenes depicting the violence and domestic abuse that Tina endured through her marriage. It was anything but nice and easy.

When I was a child, my mother would play “Proud Mary” on repeat as I danced around our living room, singing along into my toy microphone at the top of my lungs. The power in her voice and in that song made me a lifelong fan of Tina Turner.

Like many of today's biggest musicians, Beyoncé paid tribute to her idol Tina Turner. Following the death of the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll on May 24, the 41-year-old singer - currently in the midst of her Renaissance World Tour - released a statement on her website.
"My beloved queen. I love you endlessly," she wrote. "I'm so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done."
Beyoncé continued to pay tribute to the icon during one of her tour stops on May 29, performing a stripped-back version of Turner's 1966 hit "River Deep - Mountain High" at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. "I want you guys to help me...

Beyoncé made an amendment to the setlist of her “Renaissance Tour” (grab tickets here) in light of last week’s passing of Tina Turner. During the “Opening Act” section of her first show in London Monday night, Queen Bey honored the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll with a cover of “River Deep – Mountain High.”
Released in 1966, “River Deep – Mountain High” came to be one of Turner’s defining songs — and among the best in her expansive discography. Although the track is credited under Ike & Tina Turner, Ike — whose years of abuse cast a harrowingly dark shadow on his wife’s career — doesn’t perform on the original recording at all. Tina’s vocals take the lead, making it the perfect song for Beyoncé to tribute her with.
Beyoncé, who performed with Turner at the 2008 Grammys, shared some emotional words on social media shortly after the news broke of Turner’s death: “My beloved queen.

Like all of us, Oprah Winfrey was a Tina Turner fan. Unlike most of us, however, she was lucky enough to become Turner’s friend. In a new interview with CBS This Morning, Oprah and Gayle King, who also knew and loved Turner, looked back on their friendships with the performer, and even revealed details of her final years.
As Oprah and Gayle pointed out, Turner suffered numerous health issues before ultimately passing away on May 24th, 2023. She suffered a stroke in 2013, which King recalled “you could still see in her face” when she joined her for a CBS Sunday Morning interview in 2018. In 2016, she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer, and the following year, she underwent a kidney transplant thanks to her husband Erwin Bach, who gave her his kidney. Just this February, Oprah revealed, she had back surgery.

Music legend Tina Turner died on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83, and it's time to revisit some of the most memorable American Idol performances of her songs. Tina was a singer, dancer, and author. Audiences first fell in love with her when she was the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, and she later became an iconic solo artist. During her illustrious career, Tina earned three American Music Awards, seven Billboard Awards, eight Grammy Awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Throughout its 21 seasons, American Idol contestants have paid tribute to the Queen of Rock & Roll with performances of her songs. Some memorable contestants who sang her songs were Naima Adedapo, Olivia Ximines, Layla Spring, and Todrick Hall. Although taking on a Tina Turner classic is a monumental task for any singer, the finalists enjoyed performing her songs because they're challenging and entertaining.

I’ve been a fan of Tina Turner — the electrifying rock and soul goddess who died Wednesday at 83 after several lifetimes’ worth of legendary performances — for as long as I can remember. Probably since “Nutbush City Limits” hit the airwaves when I was a kid and those swaggering guitar riffs and Moog synthesizer sirens sunk into my bones.
I still can’t hear that song, or other early classics I discovered later, like the volcanic “River Deep — Mountain High,” or Turner’s cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit “Proud Mary,” with its teasing slow start and Richter scale-busting explosion into hyper-speed frenzy, without wanting to drop everything and dance.
But I only ever saw her once in concert.
That was at London’s Wembley Arena in June 1987, a month after the U.K. paperback release of her autobiography, I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder. A friend in marketing at...

Tina Turner didn’t just pull off the greatest comeback in music history — she invented the whole concept of the comeback as we know it. She became a solo superstar when she was 44. Things like that simply don’t happen. That’s how old Brandy, Usher, Adam Levine, Lance Bass, and John Legend are right now. At that age, Tina Turner was just beginning.
Turner, who died Wednesday at 83, carried the whole story of American music in her voice, because in so many ways, she was that story, but she was also a lot more.

Tina Turner was, by all accounts, simply the best. Not just as a musician, where she released unforgettable hits like "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got to Do With It?", but also as an actor. You probably remember her scene-stealing, villainous turn in the classic post-apocalyptic action thriller "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," where she played a woman trying to reboot the world by bringing barbaric capitalism and grotesque industry back to the wastelands.

Tina Turner, the legendary performer whose hits included “Proud Mary,” “The Best” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” died Wednesday at age 83 after a long illness.
She started her career as a teen singing with her future husband Ike Turner’s band, Kings of Rhythm. Her first recording came in 1958 for the song “Boxtop,” where she was credited as Little Ann (her birth name was Anna Mae Bullock). Her collaboration with Turner turned the duo into superstars from the ’60s to the ’70s. After they split, Turner found solo success in the ’80s, and was dubbed “The Queen of Rock n’ Roll.”
