Sanju is a biopic of the controversial life of actor Sanjay Dutt: his film career, jail sentence and personal life.
Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher were briefly attached to play Sunil Dutt. Sanjay Dutt himself was very keen to take up the role at one point, so that he could play his father on the big screen.
Sanju, where are you? We missed the sunrise shoot?
Sanjay Dutt: There was a lot of traffic... so many cars in the way...
Mahesh Manjrekar: I'm on a landline!
Winnie and Kamli head to the jail to listen Sanju's radio show in a Mercedes E Class. That face lifted model of the E Class was launched in India well after Sanjay Dutt got released from jail.
Part of the closing credits are a dance number with Ranbir Kapoor (Sanjay Dutt) and the real-life Sanjay Dutt.
In India, the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) demanded one aesthetic cut for a U/A rating (which allows viewers under 12 to view the film with parental supervision); the cut demanded removed a scene in which a toilet overflows while Sanju is in prison. The cuts was required as the board felt that the scene was gratuitous and unnecessary. The film was released uncut in other countries worldwide.
