Sanju is a biopic of the controversial life of actor Sanjay Dutt: his film career, jail sentence and personal life.
Speaking on his role, Vicky Kaushal revealed that his character is an "amalgamation of three or four other friends" of Dutt and is thus "fictionalized".
The first time I took drugs, it was because my father didn't like me. The second time, it was because my mother was dying. The third time, I was an addict.
When Ranbhir bangs his head in the jail he is bleeding only on 1 place but in the next hospital scene he has lot of scars.
Part of the closing credits are a dance number with Ranbir Kapoor (Sanjay Dutt) and the real-life Sanjay Dutt.
In India, the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) demanded one aesthetic cut for a U/A rating (which allows viewers under 12 to view the film with parental supervision); the cut demanded removed a scene in which a toilet overflows while Sanju is in prison. The cuts was required as the board felt that the scene was gratuitous and unnecessary. The film was released uncut in other countries worldwide.
