Exclusive: Members of the first ever Berlinale Series Award jury have predicted that TV awards could soon rival film at the world’s major festivals.
Former Yes Studios boss Danna Stern, Moonlight star André Holland and Danish writer Mette Heeno sat down with Deadline on day one of the Series Market – the TV section of the European Film Market – to discuss their role choosing the debut Berlinale Series Award winner, which is the first ever TV series award at an A-list festival. They forecasted more recognition for the small screen in the not-too-distant future.
“I have been doing international TV for years and the fact that an A-list festival is finally recognizing us and putting us at the same level as big budget films and filmmakers is really special,” said Stern. “I hope [other festivals] will follow suit.”
Stern said the “time feels right” for TV to be put in the same category as film.

“Rutherford Falls” co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas has extended her overall deal with Universal Television.
The deal, which was first signed in 2019, made it so Teller Ornelas would develop and create new broadcasts across broadcast, cable and streaming. The extension continues that pact, although the studio (a division of Universal Studio Group) did not share details on the length of the extension.
“I am elated to continue this wonderful partnership with Universal Television,” said Ornelas. “Pearlena [Igbokwe], Erin [Underhill], Jim [Donnelly] and Megan [Macmillan] have all given me immense support and are honestly the most solid humans around.”
In addition to “Rutherford Falls,” which launched its first season in April on Peacock and will soon start Season 2, Ornelas is also working on Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard’s upcoming, still untitled comedy for Apple TV Plus, starring Maya Rudolph. That series is also produced by Universal Television.

Hudson is joining as a new series regular in a recasting that involved a role redevelopment. He will play FBI Agent Garrett Miller, a newly created character that will replace FBI Special Agent Gavin Ross, the character played in the pilot by Vincent Piazza who has exited the project.
The Cleaning Lady, based on an Argentinian format, stars Yung as Thony, a whip-smart doctor who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. Sierra Teller Ornelas has introduced us into the world of Rutherford Falls and we are totally on board.
The freshman Peacock comedy marks a reunion between Ornelas and Michael Shur who previously worked on Brooklyn Nine-Nine together. Ornelas’ resume also includes work on acclaimed comedies such as Happy Endings, Splitting Up Together, and Superstore. On top of all that, Ornelas inked an overall deal with Universal Television in 2019. She’s making moves.
Co-created by Ornelas, Shur, and Ed Helms, Rutherford Falls follows best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and Reagan Wells (the hilarious Jana Schmieding), who find themselves at a crossroads–quite literally–when their sleepy town gets an unexpected wakeup call. Nathan is a descendant of the town’s founder who takes pride in his family’s history; and Reagan is a member of the Minishonka Nation, who has dreams of championing her own history. From there, things get wonderfully complicated.

The planned spy series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger has been set up at Netflix for development, Variety has confirmed.
The series, which hails from Nick Santora and Skydance Television, is described as a global spy adventure with a father and daughter at the center of the story. Monica Barbaro is attached to play Schwarzenegger’s daughter in the show. Should it go to series, it would mark the first regular television role of Schwarzenegger’s career. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the deal is still coming together but it would be a script to series order should it close.
Santora created the show and will executive produce as part of his overall deal with Skydance TV. He is also attached as showrunner on fellow Skydance show “Jack Reacher,” which is set up at Amazon. Schwarzenegger is executive producing alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost for Skydance.

Exclusive: Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) has been cast as the co-lead alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in a global spy adventure series, which is in the works at Skydance Television.
Created by Nick Santora, the series has a father (Schwarzenegger) and daughter (Barbaro) at the center of the story.
Barbaro was approached for the series on the heels of her starring turn as Phoenix, the sole female fighter pilot, in the upcoming Top Gun sequel, which Skydance co-produces with Paramount. It is slated for a theatrical release in July 2021.
Schwarzenegger’s involvement in the show also stems from his existing relationship with Skydance on the feature side, having starred in Terminator Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate for the studio.
Santora is developing and executive producing the untitled series as part of his overall deal with Skydance Television. He also serves as executive producer/showrunner of the studio’s upcoming Jack Reacher drama for Amazon.

It’s hard to believe that American Pie arrived over twenty years ago as it seems like just yesterday that we were all listening to wild band camp stories and getting hilarious advice from Jim’s awkward father. Over two decades later, the iconic R-rated comedy has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and inspired tons of other comedies, but as of yet, we’re still left waiting for a proper American Pie 5.
Whether or not the fifth installment ever happens remains to be seen, of course, but in the meantime, the brand is continuing to pump out spinoffs and the latest is American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. As you can see in the trailer up above, it’s not exactly the new outing that fans may be hoping for, but it’s still the first entry in the franchise in quite a long time and looks to be following...
