  • Spyder (2017): Who wouldn't have high expectations on the most unexpected and stylish combo in recent times, Muragadoss - Mahesh Babu combo.Even though the teaser and trailer have disappointed, expectations didn't flutter as Muragadoss rarely disappoints (Except in Stalin and 7th Sense). So how is it? Plot: Shiva (Mahesh Babu) is an Intelligence Bureau officer who works in Call Tapping department. He hears everyone's problem and helps them. His life turns upside down when a psychopath named Bhairavudu (SJ Suryah) enters his life. How he captures Bhairavudu and stops all the evil plans is what the film is all about.

My Review: AR Murugadoss is without any doubt an excellent storyteller. His talent lies in inducing social message perfectly within the commercial movie terrain. It is the reason why he is a brand in his own right, and people develop certain expectation when a film comes from him and to an extent he never disappoints. In his career, just Stalin and Seventh Sense are his weakest works and now unfortunately Spyder joins the list.

First half of the films takes lot of time to get into thrilling track.Till then an unnecessary but mandatory romantic track tests our patience.Even the placement of songs is so bad.But the film gains pace with the murder of a girl and female constable and the scenes where hero investigates about Bhairavudu and especially Bhairavudu's flashback is spine chilling. The entire sequence of Mahesh Babu going to the village of Bhairavudu and getting to know the childhood story of Bhairavudu is told in highly engaging manner. This is stamp of Murugadoss. That flashback episode has a touch of horror to it and raises the hopes on the film. The interval scene and the conflict between hero and villain are all well done.

However, the film kind of goes downhill after the interval. Scenes start to become far-fetched (an episode involving Shiva using women to save a family held captive by villain) and after a point, totally implausible (Shiva trying to stop a massive boulder from wrecking havoc). The boulder scene, roller-coaster fight, the hospital climax these all appear like specially designed items on a big scale to divert the audience from the distinct lack of story. The problem with second half is the screenplay jumps from one block to other, and one can feel the jump.

Even technically this movie has nothing new to offer.Except for cinematography, rest of the departments fell flat.Editing is messy and music is one the biggest disaster in recent times.Even the background score reminds us of Harris's previous work.

Undoubtedly, Mahesh is the biggest asset for the film. His screen presence and intense acting will impress the audience completely. Mahesh's dedication and determination are clearly visible on screen through his fights and performance. He has carried the entire film on his shoulders.SJ Surya gave a good performance as psycho and the kid who played villain's child episode role deserves applause.

So,Spyder may have all qualities to be qualified as a perfect action thriller but weak narration destroyed the chances miserably.

When Tollywood has lack of potential concepts,it severely disappoints when the movies like this wastes what they have.

    My Rating 6.25/10
  • The movie was so good. Everybody acted very well in the movie. The main highlight in the movie were SJ Surya's acing and Harris Jayaraj's BGM. Songs were not so good in the movie. The movie has some unwanted scenes mainly heroine is not needed and songs are not needed in this movie. As it is a thriller movie. Good Movie.

After Kaththi Murugadoss new venture is Spyder, for this movie he took 2 years to complete. Murugadoss has not even compromised for the script and has delivered a good movie. Mahesh Babu has done a perfect job for the film,be it the lip sync(Tamil),his action, his emotions. His character is portrayed in a manner as a socially responsible person. The other good thing about the movie is contribution of normal people to the society and they have been shown as heroes(This is new for a Mahesh Babu movie). SJ Suryah, he has took a correct decision by leaving the direction and choosing acting as his mainstream. His role and his acting skills will be spoken, he has delivered his career best performance. His role has been designed in an excellent way(shades of Joker-Batman). The first half of the film ends on a higher note, but the second half starts in a slower manner and ends abruptly. This movie doesn't engage you fully, but the scenes are written very well. Coming to VFX, this is a spoiler for the film. Some VFX scenes are not good to watch and the VFX is decreasing the quality of the film. They could have spent more for a quality product. But 120 Crores is a huge budget or they could have reduced the VFX scenes. Overall the movie is a one time watchable venture which has all the good elements for a movie.

Mahesh Babu (Shiva) plays the lead role in this movie. He works in CBI and is fond of helping public. For this, he has invents a piece of software using which he can monitor voice calls (not here to discuss if this is right or not). He happens to hear a conversation where a young lady mentions to someone over a phone that she feels someone is following her and that there is no electricity only at her house. He takes this very casually and sends one of his female colleagues. The next day he comes to know that they both were killed the previous night.

He feels really bad that he could not save them and resigns his job but his father talks him into taking his job again and ensuring he catches the culprit. He investigates the case innovatively using social media and he reaches to a duo-brother-psycho-killers Sudalai and his brother (S.J.Surya / Bharath). Flashback explains that they both are sadists and draw happiness from other's cryings. They have been involved in mass murders in the past and have planned multiple such killings

The movie unfolds on how Shiva stops Sudalai.

Good thing in this movie is that no one from the hero's family is killed, just to agitate hero (which happens in most of the movies)

The bad thing is, there is so much of destruction of public property even after Shiva finds our the motives of the villain
  • When you have 125 crore movie, you have really high expectations from this movie but i watched this movie with not much expectations and i would say i am satisfied with the movie even though there were certain things which were not so good,it had some good visuals and some not so good visuals and in some parts, certain things were not believable but overall, they tried to do something new and almost succeeded

Spyder ******* Synopsys – A surveillance intelligent bureau officer at a lower rank creates his own spy software for his rescue missions off course with help from his friends in office. His mission gets in to another level when he engages in tackling a psychopath who terrors the public.

When AR Murugadose collaborates with Mahesh babu the expectations were sky-high and undoubtedly, he delivered an engaging thriller with few lets downs in the Visual effects here and there. This time ARM shows how smart is the lead actor than how physically engaged he is in all the frames. And this time again ARM didn't get bogged by the star, the movie is purely based on the story & characters written. The Plot have had scope for a better script which would have become an action- packed edge of the seat thriller, however that lacks from the movie in some places. The extended family scenes distracted the audience inside hall, but loved the villain intro and flashback scenes, which others may claim that quite tedious to experience on screen. Through Spyder ARM applies the same formula of a CAT and mouse game, the battle between the good & bad. Neither the CAT nor the mouse would be aware of each other's actions until the plan is executed. ARM proves how vulnerable the human lives are though some sequences & the climax lengthy dialogue rendered by the hero.

Mahesh Babu once claimed that his directors are God for him - Only a director's own actor could perform absolutely stunning in all major sequences when the film is run by its script & story and not even marketed well with the lead actor's presence. He just amazed me with the performance. There was a moment when a women constable and teen- age student gets killed by the psycho villain and the director managed not to showcase us the blood and chaos, it's through his terrific performance on screen that led us to feel the depth of crime that happened.

I am unsure why SJ Surya's psycho character reminds me of epic role of Heath Ledger's Jocker in Dark Night. Here in the movie the villain kills people for fun, just to enjoy the way people weep. He keeps terrifying them. Murugadose managed to bring the fear among audience even before the introduction of main villain. SJ Surya just nailed portraying the role so perfectly that he just fits in the shoes of "Bhairava" quite comfortably. Just for the mandatory romance track of the film there was Rakul Preet Sing.

Harris Jayaraj's background score and Santhosh Sivan's cinematography are terrific. Santhosh's epic mirror reflection shot is the signature one that I personally loved watching on big screen. And especially during the villain's into with the magic of Haris's terrific BGM the way Santhosh showcased much confident eye of the villain was just mind-blowing. Haris Jayraj's songs were not that impressive as expected except the intro song "Boom Boom". Other songs did help the movie to extend little bit and managed to cop up the length.

The biggest let down of the movie is its Visual effects. They haven't much concentrated on the same. Both the VFX and Climax action scenes could have been much better.

Bottom Line – Spyder is not a mass masala movie and an edge of the seat thriller either. Spyder has a different tone from the very beginning. Expect an intelligent Cat & Mouse game and experience how through the smart move by the lead character tackle the psycho serial killer. Watch it on Big screen and experience the stunning visuals. Thumps up for Spyder.

  • Let's first acknowledge the few things that 'Spyder' gets right: 'Heroism' in all its cinematic sense, is pretty dumbed down in the flick - the protagonist Shiva (Mahesh Babu) enjoys a desk-job where he operates as a peeping tom in people's lives (by tapping into their phones). Borrowing a cue from Spielberg's 'Minority Report', he uses an application he has developed on his own, to serve as a (relatively unknown) vigilante by bringing criminal deeds to a standstill. It's the kind of story befitting Tier-II (or aging) stars of Indian cinema, where the punchlines are practically non-existent, public acceptance of the hero is negligible and the fight scenes aren't marred by excessive slow-motion. Kudos to Mahesh Babu (a superstar in Telugu) for taking up such a role in the prime of his career. His superb Tamil diction might even put industry A-listers to shame.

Unarguably the best thing about the film is the pre-interval stretch where the evolution of the antagonist is disclosed. Sudalai spends a good part of his childhood in a graveyard lending ears to the screams and cries of the dead's kindred. As time progresses, it slowly grows into a fiendish 'addiction' of sorts for him. When the number of visitors start to dwindle, he commits murders just to listen to people weeping - a form of perverse delight ascribed to 'Sadistic Personality Disorder'. The evil aura surrounding this character is further accentuated by the elucidation of his present exploits: people are chopped into pieces and their limbs mixed up. Reason? There is NO freaking reason! Touché Mr. Murugadoss. Thanks for not adding Sudalai to the overdone 'killing for vengeance' list.

Now, the drawbacks: The visual effects are appalling. For a film with a whopping 120 Crore budget, one would have hoped to see better work done on that front. It also doesn't help that the director is vainly attempting to outdo each set-piece fiasco with another. The settings must have sounded like aesthetic marvels during early discussions: one at a theme- park involving a roller-coaster, one involving a massive boulder crushing everything in its path, and one set in a collapsing hospital. The ideas are somewhat poorly construed - even with seasoned technicians such as Santhosh Sivan, Sreekar Prasad and Harris Jeyaraj on board, the outcome is astonishingly subpar.

Not to forget the weakest element in most star vehicles these days: the heroine. While it's quite unconventional (in South Indian cinema) to see Shalini (Rakul Preet) wanting to pair up with Shiva on a friends-with-benefits kind of relationship, this isn't the film where the topic gets fully tapped into. What we get are ho-hum song & dance routines that only act as 'pee-breaks' (why do directors consider stuffing songs in a thriller when their contribution is just to prolong the run-time?). Murugadoss in fact, wants to appease both rural and urban viewers - so on one hand, we have porn-watching women ready to experiment, and on the other, soap-watching housewives ready to save innocent lives and kick some baddie-arse.

'Spyder' is yet another case of teasers giving the wrong impression. What someone would naturally expect (by just seeing the teaser) is an international espionage thriller that makes good use of technology and advanced gadgetry (like the rather slick-looking CGI spider) to nab a villain à la Blofield from the Bond series or Thomas Gabriel from 'Live Free or Die Hard'. Which is also why I must insist on the character of Sudalai being used in a different film altogether (one with a more ghastly tone preferably on the lines of a 'Raman Raghav 2.0'.). The Chanwook Park ('I Saw The Devil') or Christopher Nolan (Batman trilogy) style of pitting 'flawed-hero against menacing-villain' doesn't translate effectively on screen here, even though Suryah's act is remarkable.

Verdict: At best, 'Spyder' is an okay watch for the rendering of the near-mythical antagonist. The second half has 'exaggeration' written all over it, and surely won't go down well with most viewers!
  • Mahesh Babu has nailed it with his bilingual. Superb story and a grippy screenplay is the crust of the film. Mahesh Babu, acts as an intelligence bureau officer whose motive is to help the innocent before any mishap. But one such case, a mysterious one, forms the crust of the story. The expectations created by the first half is let down by the second half. Ineffective romantic portions and logical lapses in fight sequences had slowed down the pace. Even though such lapses are present, they could be overlooked for the sake of SJ Suryah, the main antagonist. His role is effective and at times reminds us of the JOKER in The Dark knight and the film also contains a similar interrogation scene. The villains past aka flashback is not a cliché and is convincing. The heroine is the weakest of characterisations in the whole of the film containing little screen space. RJ Balaji too doesn't have much scope in his character.

Overall it is the usual cat-and-mouse game with some amazing touches by AR Murugadoss. It is a more than a one time watchable entertainer. AR Murugadoss has given the audiences an amazing entertainer with a strong social message inside.
  • It's a good movie. But the story is inspired and some scenes are the exact copy of Christopher Nolan's batman movie THE DARK KNIGHT. But S.J.Surya nailed it
  • Warning: Spoilers
I am giving 1 star because the director wanted to deliver a message to the audience, there should be empathy among us human beings, very truly said and should be embraced by the human clan. That being said, the rest of all, be it story, direction, plot everything was a nightmare. ARMurugo probably has a good name in the industry, if you look at his work, most of it is copied Ghajini from Memento, direction is poor, rather it was a disaster, the only reason the movie is making money is because it was released on a 4-day holiday weekend dussera, look at movies like Baby, Naam Shabana from Neeraj Pandey, or Phantom from Kabir Khan, they raise the standards of film-making. Murugo has taken his audience for granted.
  • Must watch Telugu movie.

Wonderful subject told in a beautiful way.

Edge of the seat thriller for audience.

One of the best scenes in the entire movie is the feat done by few ladies to save their neighbors in the street. Hats-off to Director.

There is an underlining message to audience right from start till the end. Anyone who tries to catch the suspense built to experience the thrill and understand the message by end of movie will never be disappointed with Spyder.

Happy to have seen this movie on release day.

    Good Luck to entire unit.

Do not miss the movie, meaning and message.
  • I usually refrain from commenting if I didn't like a Movie, so I'll keep it short. First half is super boring and unimpressive. There are some good scenes in the second half. But, if you're a Nolan fan, DON'T WATCH IT. It's not worth it. If you thought A.R.Murugadoss would have by now changed the way he shows women on screen, I'm sorry, that again doesn't happen (I would say it's worse than Samantha's role from Kathi). Overall it was super embarrassing to have taken my parents to this Movie. I don't recommend it to anyone.
  • B grade copy of dark knight( same masala, slightly different presentation, but really bad taste, like those fake dairy milks in the market), some moments and thoughts were great and smart, but too much of forced heroism, could have been great COPY but failed, didn't expect this from AR. I have seen his earlier movies they were original and fresh, this is just suffocating at times, also at the start the hero gives a great speech and then goes on to creep out and stalk a girl with whatsoever no link to mission. The scene was super creepy. Fails in mostly every department, poor editing, screenplay, vfx. Better watch Dark Knight and save your brain.

S J Surya's acting was fantastic. A superb villain! And a variety concept.
  • Warning: Spoilers
    Spoilers at the end.

If you are reading this review to decide whether to watch or not watch SPYDER on the big screen. Don't think. Just go watch the movie in a good theater. Its super entertaining and original.

Mahesh Babu(MB) is very convincing (but that is a given... why am I even wasting words on this...sheer audacity on my part). He is convincing as a do-good very young software genius. He creates a software to detect people in distress. He uses the voice calls and social media data sent to the Intelligence Bureau where he works. The software sends him alerts. He uses it to prevent crime. And no he is not a boring geeky nerd either. Breaks into a smile easily. Sheepish ones too. His work is illegal so...he is like a digital-age Zorro.

SJ Surya as villain is too convincing - meaning - very disturbing. The child who plays the psycho's early years freaked me out. I was like - okay i get the idea - enough ...go ahead.

Romance is not given much screen time but whatever is there is super entertaining and fits into the flow seamlessly. Quality makes up for quantity.

Rest of cast all do a great job. I especially like MBs mom, dad and friends Priyadarshi and Balaji. The child who plays the villains early years looks an exact miniature of adult villain. Is Sayaji Shinde in the cast for good luck!!! But I was mighty glad to see one familiar face.

Songs seem forced into the flow of the story. You cannot fault with the songs by themselves but ... MBs clothes in the songs are WHAT!!! But Sigh!!! Even those pieces of mismatched tatters put together look good on him. Lyrics witty with references to Marvel Comics, Hogwarts, Confucius, cloth-wrinkles and Ironman, etc...

VFX scenes do not impress in the roller coaster or rolling boulder scenes. VFX good in the climax.

But there are lots of other stuff that justifies watching SPYDER on the big screen e.g. crowd scenes, MBs office floor, equipment, the computer screens on which he analyses data. Its these displays that really connects the viewer with the attack-strategies MB plans.

Script is very clever in parts. Gives you a high. It is sprayed with witty dialogues. Main background music is very digital-like and catchy.

The digital data in the plot brought an originality to the script.

I enjoyed the 2+ hours immensely and so did everyone around me. I have watched this movie twice...once with family and once with a friend. And I can watch it again and again.

    Spoilers ahead.

    Spoilers ahead.

    Spoilers ahead.

    My favorite scenes are

    1. how MB scares away the villain from his home

    2. sisters-HSC-certificate-call-for-help whatsapp video and its responses.

    3. Mom and Rakuls conversation.

I felt cheated that there was no SPYDER-ROBOT from the first trailer. I missed the news item about the robot's absence.

I am confident I saw Balaji holding a tiny bag with bloody-flesh in a trailer. There is no such scene in the movie. I almost decided I don't want to watch SPYDER if it has such scenes and because AR Murgadoss also made Gajini (a movie that i am scared to watch even with a remote control with finger on pause button).

I am happy I did watch SPYDER.
  • This film revolves around a low-level employee for the Intelligence Bureau named "Shiva" (Mahesh Babu) whose job consists of monitoring private telephone conversations between everyday people to try to prevent crimes if he can. To help him accomplish this he has developed a software application that keys in to certain words or phrases and then he dispatches one of his contacts to the potential crime scene to intervene if necessary thereby stopping a crime before it can be committed. The beauty of it is that his superiors have no idea of what he is actually doing as it's all off the record. His satisfaction in helping others, however, is put to the test when he sends one of his colleagues to a destination where a serial killer by the name of "Sudalai" (S. J. Suryah) is secretly hiding and both his friend and the innocent person he was hoping to help are brutally murdered. From that point on he makes it his mission to track down this murderer before he can kill any more people. What he doesn't know is just how clever this maniac is. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a good action film for the most part but it struggled somewhat with the romantic element between Shiva and "Charlie" (Rakul Preet Singh). Likewise, the ending also got a bit out of hand as well. Even so, despite these faults I enjoyed this film and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I was never hyped about a Telugu movie as I did about Spyder in recent times and I was just awestruck in disgust as movie goes on and I just couldn't stop looking at my watch wondering when this torment is going to end. Points supporting my claim. -> Rakul Preet. I wonder if ARM ran out of ideas to squeeze Heroin to match typical Indian movie formula, just dance beside Hero and he presented in most distasteful manner. I just could't look at screen when Rakul is in it. She contributed nothing to story or movie except huge cringe which made audience uncomfortable as she plundered the flow of movie. -> Music. Even though I am not fond of Songs in Indian movies, music was just awful. Title BGM was kind of better but misplacement of it in scenes where there is literally no 'heroism' ruined it. And villain's BGM was funny where it should be scary which disturbed the mood of scene altogether. And don't even get me started on music in songs. ->Direction. This movie is a ripoff of famous THE DARK KNIGHT. Guess what I just realized 1000 words aren't enough to describe this atrocity. Just don't waste your time on this huge pile of typical routine movie even though some are claiming that it is a experiment and innovative. IT IS NOT. Just copied every sense form one movie or another like SEVEN and THE DARK KHIGHT and stitched together is worst way possible.

My first Telugu movie in the cinemas, that too seen first day first show did not disappoint me at all ,the movie was great like not even a single scene was boring "an absolute thriller". Mahesh Babu and SJ Suriya nailed their roles it was so good seeing them in the screen. Did not find any big deal with actress ,i believe she did not have much to do. Even though we can find some glitches in action scenes ,it was great. Hats off to A.R. Murugadoss sir for delivering us such a wonderful movie. Songs were average ,it did not have much impact but the BGM was great .

overall a good entertaining action movie "A GREAT POPCORN FLICK"

This review is all about my opinion and it may not be applicable to all viewers
  • Warning: Spoilers
I will not write much about it, just that it's a good movie, properly acted by Mahesh Babu and S Justin Surya but ***SPOILER*** it's also a copy of Dark Knight and somewhat of Snowden. This is was not expected from Murugadoss. When a movie like Dark Knight is copied, please give the credits as well. The movie will show signs of Dark Knight within an 1 hour of the movie and then everything becomes predictable.

Those who've watched Dark Knight will definitely like it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
ARM takes a lot of inspiration from C. Nolan movies. While it worked nicely for Ghajini (Memento), he made a bad attempt in this case - Dark Knight! Mahesh's character was not developed well and Rakul's role was created to add romantic songs which were forgettable. The first half builds up nicely for the antagonist, SJ Suryah but what follows next, it is a big let down. The parts that are supposed to be clever, turns out be funny (Aunties) and outright silly (big boulder). The climax falls flat as the antagonist too fizzles out. My biggest disappointment was that the movie couldn't match up to exorbitant tickets prices in US. P.S. There is no robotic spider that was shown in the teaser :( SPYder is an effing call tapping software.
  • Good movie. must watch !!! thriller . Acting is good .most recommended

    pros:- cons:-

    * new concept * Songs * nice acting by all characters * less ( no comedy ) exception as it's a * nice story and direction thriller move

    * roller coaster seen (-_-) X over expected

over all 8.0/10 good one if you are a action thriller fan , --must watch it-- .villain and hero acting is above average. best Telugu action, thriller movie so far in 2017
  • Warning: Spoilers
This movie had great potential but unfortunately, an unclear focus on the overall storyline lead to the movie being fairly average.

Spyder is a spy-action thriller which revolves around the talented spy (Mahesh Babu) who tries to stop the psychotic killer (SJ Surya) from creating chaos. The story is very thrilling and it really could have been an amazing movie had the director focused more on the plot rather than trying to incorporate masala elements. The result of this was that the movie did not satisfy Mahesh's fans who were expecting a mass type movie, and it did not satisfy those who were expecting a nail-biting thriller. In the end, you just got a half-baked movie which is a real shame seeing the big names involved in this film.

    Pros of Spyder:

Plot: The plot is an excellent plot which really could have been something spectacular. Despite the flaws of the movie, the plot is strong enough to make this movie watchable. There are some moments in the movie that were executed perfectly. It's a small demo of what the movie could have been.

SJ Surya: Pulls off the character of Sudulai, who is a psychotic killer. Watching his acting is a real treat.

Background Music: Great throughout the movie. Sudulai's BGM is very chilling to listen to.

    Cons of Spyder:

Mahesh Babu's acting: I rarely criticize Prince Mahesh, but his acting was very restrained and wooden throughout the entire film. The emotional scenes were not convincing at all.

Rakul Preet Singh: For what she was given, she didn't do a bad job. However her character was completely unnecessary and her only purpose was to fill up songs.

VFX: For a big budget 150 CR movie, the VFX was very bad. Scenes looked too cartoonish.

Illogical Scenes: There are far too many illogical scenes that test your patience. The fight on the roller coaster sounds cool, but it was incredibly stupid and unrealistic. A half-conscious Mahesh who just got impaled by a metal rod is able to accurately shoot Sudulai in his non-vital organs? Give me a break...

Lack of focus on script: I wish they just stuck to the spy vs criminal story but instead Mahesh is dancing in a song after every 2 scenes which is annoying. There is a severe lack of seriousness in this movie.

Songs: Songs were below average. Except the first song, I didn't really like any of them. I'm only speaking about the Tamil version, but I heard the Telugu version is even worse because the lyrics were directly translated from Tamil and don't make any sense.

Terrible Climax: Sudulai succeeds in bombing the hospital and killing hundreds of people. We would expect the hero to experience a setback, but he just kills Sudulai in the span of 5 minutes and gives an emotionless speech. What about all those people who just died? The way the movie ended was incredibly abrupt and strange, almost as if we are just supposed to ignore what just happened. I expected a more epic confrontation between Mahesh and SJ Surya.

Spyder isn't bad by any means, but it isn't exactly great either. The flaws are very obvious, but It's a decent movie to watch. Keep your expectations low however.
  • johnbt2930 August 2018
A crap movie by THE stupidiest director (ARMurgadoss)
  • Nice story..little more required from direction...
  • Movie Message: When Humanity dies, it leads to the end of the Mankind.

Mahesh Babu performance is peaks. He never hesitate to do experimental movies , Spyder is one of them.
