The first "Trolls" film was released in 2016 during Hollywood's 2010s franchise boom. It was a solid hit that gave rise to a sequel, which arrived in the form of 2020's "Trolls World Tour." AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron remains as fiercely optimistic as ever that brighter days are ahead for his theater chain and the box office as a whole. But he thinks they’d be even brighter if Hollywood’s studios got back to a longer, industry-wide exclusivity window.

In AMC’s latest earnings call on Thursday, Aron stressed, as he has in past calls, that his company does not need the box office to return to pre-pandemic levels for it to once again turn a consistent profit. He pointed to increased per patron spending despite a steep drop in admissions as proof that if studios significantly increase their theatrical film output, AMC will be able to draw in a wider swath of moviegoers who have shown they are more willing to spend more on premium screens and concessions when the movies they are interested in are on the marquee.

“Wicked” is “very very popular” — on the big screen, and now on video-on-demand. In a rare display of transparency for downstream revenues, Universal reported the big-budget musical has racked up $26 million in its first day and $70 million in its first week of digital release in the United States and Canada.

“Wicked” debuted on home entertainment on Dec. 31, for $30 to buy and $20 to rent the original or sing-along version of the film. According to the studio, the Broadway adaptation delivered the largest first day and initial week of sales for any Universal theatrical title. For comparison, the studio’s second-largest video-on-demand (VOD) launch was 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” with $44 million from its first week of digital rentals and sales.

It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.

Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.

“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

“Trolls Band Together,” the third chapter in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, gets psychedelic with the introduction of new worlds and characters, helped along by some trippy 2D animation from Titmouse. It’s a musical tribute to ’90s boy bands, fittingly enough, as Justin Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his long-lost brothers (known as the family band BroZone): Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), and Clay (Kid Cudi).

It was bad enough for “The Marvels” to suffer a Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise low $46.1 million opening amidst fan reception that was mildly positive at best. It’s likely to get worse this weekend as a slew of pre-Thanksgiving newcomers, led by the return of “The Hunger Games,” will peel away much of the lingering interest in the new Marvel film among casual moviegoers.

Likely to take No.1 will be Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel to the YA novel series that Lionsgate turned into four films in the early 2010s that still remain the highest-grossing in studio history.

Other films arriving this weekend include Universal/DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together,” Searchlight’s “Next Goal Wins,” and Sony/TriStar’s tongue-in-cheek slasher film “Thanksgiving.”

“Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is expected to emerge victorious in this weekend’s box office battle royale.

It’s competing against two fellow newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s threequel “Trolls Band Together” and Sony’s gory thriller “Thanksgiving,” in this crowded pre-Turkey Day corridor. Despite the stacked race, all three films could work as counter-programming against each other and carve out solid box office receipts. That may not be the case for last weekend’s champion, Disney’s $220 million budgeted superhero sequel “The Marvels.” After a disappointing $47 million debut, the comic book tentpole is bracing for a 50-55% drop, which puts ticket sales around $21 million to $23 million in its sophomore outing.

October was another winner over 2022, thanks mostly to “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) and early stellar results for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Universal). That makes 10 of 11 months that improved compared to last year, with May only slightly down.

That could continue in November, but it might be close. The weight is on three franchise titles: “The Marvels” (Disney) on November 10, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) and “Trolls Band Together” (Universal), both November 17. Those three, plus “Wish” (Disney) on November 22, have the best chances of surpassing $100 million in domestic gross, with “The Marvels” and “Hunger Games” the most likely during the month.

October’s improvement over last year will be around 20 percent. That’s off from the 26 percent improvement year to date, but still better than comparable Novembers.

Culture minister talks cuts after state funding for film soared to €800m in 2022

Italy is to cut the €800m of funding it currently earmarks for film production per year, according to Italian minister of culture Italian Gennaro Sangiuliano.

The move comes at a time when Italy is producing a high number of Italian and international films. However, Italian films are continuing to underperform at the box office compared to the pre-pandemic era.

“It’s time to intervene,” Sangiuliano said, noting that state funding for film soared from €400m in 2019 to €800m in 2022 according to data from the Investments in Cinema and Audiovisual Development Fund.

Indie films have scored some impressive figures at Spanish box office this year.

As the Spanish film industry comes together at Valladolid International Film Week (known locally as the Seminici), one of the big talking points will be how to make independent films stand out at the local box office.

Universal Pictures has released a new BTS featurette of Trolls Band Together’s star-studded cast voicing their iconic characters and having the time of their lives. The animated musical-comedy film comes three years after Trolls’ second installment, Trolls World Tour — which ends with Queen Barb coming to understand and appreciate the importance of all kinds of music. Now, Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, after three years, reprise their beloved roles as Poppy and Branch, now colored by romance and the discovery of Branch's secret past as a former boyband sensation.

DreamWorks Animation has laid off 70 employees, or approximately 4% of its workforce, amid production slowdowns caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and rising production costs.

“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a Dwa spokesperson said in a statement. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.”

DreamWorks Animation, which was acquired by NBCUniversal in 2016, found success this past winter with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which legged out for months at the box office and grossed $484 million worldwide.
