Circa 1969, several strangers, most with a secret to bury, meet by chance at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one night, everyone will show their true colors - before everything goes to hell.
Released the same day as First Man (2018), another period piece set in 1969, shot on film, with Shea Whigham in the cast.
So, Miles, what is this? Some sort of pervert hotel?
Father Daniel Flynn: The kid can't answer you, you tied his mouth shut.
The presidential news conference seen on the lobby television places the action during late January of 1969. That was in the middle of a record winter for snowfall in the area where the hotel is said to be located, yet there is no snow on the ground. Lows that night in Reno were below freezing, yet it rains in the nearby mountains in the film.
There are almost no opening credits. Only the film's title is shown after the first scene.
