In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.
Actress Millicent Simmonds has been deaf since infancy due to a medication overdose. This was the second film she starred in, with Wonderstruck (2017) being her first.

Lee takes his son to the waterfall to note that loud natural sounds can mask their noises, with both yelling to demonstrate. If Evelyn was so far along in her pregnancy he should have set up some kind of camp there so that any screams from the childbirth could be masked. However, it's not very practical - or safe - for the family to be living outdoors day and night in this situation.
The main title appears after about nine minutes, created to look as though it is made from sand, and is the only on-screen credit aside from the opening production logos.
