The final look of the creature wasn't fully figured out until pretty late in the process, during post-production.

Corn in a grain silo does not act like quicksand. A person can walk around in it fairly easily, sinking to knee level at most. And while grain entrapment accidents do happen in real life it is not a slow sinking but a sudden and violent affair as the grain shifts and collapses.
The main title appears after about nine minutes, created to look as though it is made from sand, and is the only on-screen credit aside from the opening production logos.
