Netflix has ordered a second season of the documentary series “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.” Season 2 will premiere with all three episodes on September 20.
The series covers the true story of Alex Murdaugh, who was found guilty of the murder of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul in 2021. Season 2 will feature first-hand accounts from those who were there the days leading up to and following the murders, including the family’s former housekeeper Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, Libby Murdaugh’s caregiver Mushelle “Shelly” Smith, Alex Murdaugh’s cousin Curtis Edward Smith and juror Gwen Generette. Returning voices from Season 1 include Paul’s ex-girlfriend Morgan Doughty, Paul’s friend Anthony Cook and Wall Street Journal reporter Valerie Bauerlein.
Season 1 of “Murdaugh Murders” debuted as Murdaugh’s trial was actively unfolding. It premiered on Feb. 22 and Murdaugh was found guilty of both murders on March 2. The attention on the case propelled the series to solid viewership numbers,...

Directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason were never short on angles through which to investigate the crimes, casualties and collusions of the powerful Murdaugh family of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
The most obvious one would have been to tell the story through Alex Murdaugh, a former solicitor who’s currently on trial for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Thanks to dozens of live feeds on YouTube, the ongoing courtroom drama has emerged as the trial of the year.
But once they were on the ground in the Lowcountry, the directors behind Netflix’s new docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” were told there was only one place to start –– the 2019 boat crash that had killed Mallory Beach.
“I think what people don’t understand is that had there not been a boat crash years prior, and had Mallory Beach not died the way she did...

In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve gathered a list of special programming across several networks to commemorate the holiday that celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, and delivered the news that all enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is still not recognized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized by several states — and this year, many companies are declaring it a paid holiday in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and national protesting that has taken place following the death of George Floyd.
This special programming celebrates black history and educates viewers on the history of the black experience in the United States.

Paramount Network is to be lauded for its recent documentary series “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.” Jay Z produced this critically acclaimed in-depth exploration of the background and story of the murder that ignited the Black Lives Matter movement. Martin was just 17 when he was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member in the Sanford, Florida community on February 26, 2012. He had been there with his father to visit a family friend. George Zimmerman was acquitted of a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.
Recently, we’ve experienced a rise in black horror in cinema, including last year’s Oscar winner “Get Out” to this year’s sci-fi hit “Sorry to Bother You. As Robyn Bahr of The Hollywood Reporter observes “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” tells a harrowing tale of real-life horror and that’s what makes this film so affecting.

It's been over six years since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Florida. The new docuseries Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story takes a deep dive into the tragedy, as well as the ensuing media coverage, public outcry and political response.
"It was the number one story in America, and that, surprisingly, doesn’t lead to deep coverage," says co-director Jenner Furst. With Julia Willoughby Nason, Furst spent a year collecting footage and conducting interviews in order to build a more nuanced and complex narrative than the one ...

There are few who will watch “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” who will come to the series completely unfamiliar with the individual at its center. From his 2012 shooting death to the emerging generation of activists and engaged citizens that arose from the 2013 verdict in George Zimmerman’s resultant murder trial, the name Trayvon Martin carries with it associations in different corners of the country. If Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason‘s six-part documentary series shows one thing definitively, it’s that Martin’s senseless killing has come to symbolize so much more about how America sees itself today and the elements of American life that remain unchanged after centuries of turmoil.
One clear goal of “Rest in Power” is to reframe the story as that of individual human beings and not as merely pawns in an ideological or societal struggle. The breadth of interview subjects helps to...

My mother sat next to me as we listened to Trayvon Martin die again and again. Millions of Americans have heard the 9-1-1 calls from the gated Sanford, Florida, community where, six years ago, an armed George Zimmerman felt compelled to follow a black kid carrying snacks while wearing a hoodie in the rain. We have heard the struggle and the anguished voice silenced by the sole gunshot. But even a deep familiarity with the incident couldn’t stop my mother from gripping my jacket sleeve as the audio...

Paramount Network has set a July premiere date for “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” a six-part documentary series from executive producer Jay-Z. Based on the book by Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the series will offer a definitive look at one of the most galvanizing events of the last decade that provided the foundation that launched Black Lives Matter.
Per the official synopsis: “Martin was an unarmed 17-year old high school student shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman, in the Florida community where they both lived. Zimmerman was acquitted on a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense, sparking protests and outrage worldwide. The series delves deep into the heart of the story which is more than a tragic narrative about a young man’s life cut short – it’s a story about race, politics, power, money, and the criminal justice system.
