  • Bhaagamathie is kind of different movie which we never used to watch before. Its on socio-political issue as well as horror and thriller movie. There are 5 reasons given below that why should you watch this movie.

    * Anushka Shetty's performance - Anushka Shetty's outstanding performance as Chanchala (which we have seen in her other roles e.g. Devsena, Sweet etc.) * The versatile star cast - the other stars of movies, Unni Mukundan, Asha Sharath, Jayaram, are versatile actors and well-known in their own industries. * Thaman's BGM - The background music and songs are really very sweet. * Film Direction - Direction of movie is too good that it has scary scenes, but more focused on its story. * Tailor-made script for Anushka - The script of movie written by Director G Ashok specially keeping Anushka Shetty in mind. He waited 4 years for her to give the dates.
  • I am a big fan of horror movies, and really like some classic ones like Pizza (Tamil) , Shutter (Thai) etc. So I definitely wanted to see this movie irrespective of the ratings. It's a horror movie and it's got Anushka Shetty, what more can I ask ? Well, I should have asked for a more convincing script and non-cliched scenes ! Nevertheless I think you can watch this movie. It's extremely cliched , with the same old same old. Her acting is fantastic, and towards the end, with all the twists etc, you still want a more convincing story. At times, it will also remind you of Manichitrathazhu ( or Bhool Bhoolaiya, if you must ) . Most of the movie will keep you interested, but if you are horror fan like me in general, you won't find the movie that scary. You will laugh at what you predict also.

    Bhaagamathie (2018):

Bhaagamathie is one of few such films which was under production since 2 years and faced lot of inconsistencies which resulted in delay in its release. After several hurdles, the movie got released with decent buzz because of its lead actress and genre.Even the promos generated curiosity among audience.SO how is it?

    Plot:

Eshwar Prasad(Jayaram) is an honest minister who appoints Chanchala IAS(Anushka) as his personal secretary. As time passes by, he opposes the high command for a cause. In order to pull him down, the government targets Chanchala. They take her to an undisclosed location called Bhaagamathie bungalow. Upon their investigation, they get the shock of their lives when they start to see Chanchala behaving like Bhaagamathie. Who is this Bhaagamathie? What does she have to do with Chanchala? and what is the twist behind the whole political set up? To know the answers, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

    My Review:

Even though Bhaagamathie is touted as a scary horror with periodic elements,it is a political thriller filled with supernatural elements. He has used horror elements and royal setup to cash in on the image of Anushka who is known for such movies like Arundhati. The story of Bhaagamathie, is nothing like what was suggested by the filmmakers through the theatrical trailer and the nightmarish posters. It was supposed to keep the audience on the edge-of-the-seat with a spine-chilling backstory of the central character Bhaagamathie, a ghost from the past century. It was supposed to send the shiver down our spines while we witness the horrors suffered by the characters that wander into Bhaagamathie's territory. Instead, we get a blown-out version of Tamil film Pizza. And shades of all horror movies that have been made in the South Indian film industry thus far.

There's always a thin line between being scary and being loud. Horror films are always difficult to make because you cannot really tell if you're scaring the audience or boring them. Director G Ashok's flirts with this thin line on more than one occasion in his ambitious venture 'Bhaagamathie' but with no success.

The scary moments that the director has relied upon are outrightly boring. Much of the movie is passive, only after Bhaagamathie's role gets introduced does it turn a bit interesting.Second half is decent but climax twist may sound interesting,it is heavily inspired from Pizza (which is in turn inspired from The Usual Suspects). Even the ending scene is inspired from Pizza.

Anushka has got a role that puts her at the center stage of the proceedings. She gets to play a character that has scope for multiple variations and thrill the audience. Unfortunately, despite the presence of all the elements she only manages to scratch the surface when there was much more to achieve.Unni Mukundan and Jayaram shined in their roles which brought us a fresh feel even when their roles are cliched.

Technically,Bhaagamathie is just average.Especially I was disappointed with Madhie as this is his weakest work.Thaman is as usually loud.

So,Bhaagamathie is a typical political thriller dressed as a supernatural thriller and hugely inspired from Pizza.

    My Rating 5.75/10

    Warning: Spoilers
For once, it's good to see a telegu movie with a female lead and not the usual over-the-top hero. The screenplay is a bit messy and tries to mix several genres but fails flat. I'd prefer they keep the movie as a political thriller. The supernatural elements does generate suspense and adds more mystery to some scenes but after the reveal that it's all a facade, it raises more questions like how did she able to pull off one character's through the door with seemingly no rope of any kind? the horror elements are just too good to be staged like that. Anushka Shetty is very good and able to carry the movie, her dialogue delivery is decent in serious scenes especially in scenes where she gets possessed by Bhaagamatie's soul. Jayaram does an impressive job as the cunning, smiling snake politician, on the front he's a saint, selfless and man of the people while behind the curtain he's a corrupt and greedy like most politicians are, I enjoyed his performance because he is able to fool the viewer that he's the former and not the latter. Asha Sharath played a confident, smart officer, she's the one who questions Chanchala, but as smart and intelligent her character supposed to be she seems pretty daft at times, and how they were able to orchestrate all those illusions without her getting a hint is a bit baffling. As per usual, there are two to three comic relief characters, that might or might not provoke any laughter from me. In the technical department, the score as well as the cinematography do keep trying to give the film its much required lift sincerely. Overall, the film is entertaining and will keep you guessing about what's coming next.
  • The movie was so good. Anushka and everybody acted very good in the movie. The movie lagged a lot at the 1st half of the movie but the 2nd half of the movie was very interesting and thrilling. BGM in the movie was very good. There are many twists in the 2nd half which was very interesting in the movie.

Once you watch this movie, you can not simply go away without puting a review. This movie deserved a 10/10 vote since it has a excellent story, script, acting and back ground. A very good acting from Anushka and the others. Specially Anushka performing a tremendous charactor here. I was wondering why she is acting like "not natural" with the doctor, while she is performing very naturaly with the other scenes. just realized at the end of the story. And only negative from this, is what happens if "Sampath" the ACP, decides to take he to some other place than "Bhaagamathie Bungalow" ? Overall a good Movie again. Thanks to the Team Bhaagamathie.
  • Movie: Bhaagamathie (UA): Action/Horror/Thriller - Telugu

BHAAGAMATHIE is the first film I've seen in theatre, first day first show. Plus, unexpectedly it was without subtitles! But I was able to understand the story and many of the dialogues.

    Positives:

    • Anushka's performance is extremely mindblowing and realistic. She is the soul of the film and doesn't fail to impress. All other actors too deliver great performances.
    • The screenplay of the film is watertight and razor sharp, and as a result it doesn't deviate at all.
    • The thrills of the film are impressive and the film uses humour in some proportions, very well.
    • The film manages to scare you right from the beginning, and as a result does justice to its genres.
    • The production values are excellent, grand and top notch.
    • The music by SS Thaman is melodious and exciting at the same time.
    • The interval blockade is excellent and drew a lot of whistles and applause from viewers. Even I was left stunned and my mouth was left open.
    • Some of the action blocks are also impressively done.

    Negatives:

    Seriously, nothing!

    Repeat value: Yes

Overall, BHAAGAMATHIE is a highly entertaining action-horror thriller which has all the necessary elements to keep you hooked to the edge of the seat. Since I saw it without subtitles, I've got a reason to watch it again when subtitles will be available. But language barrier can be broken, and films from the southern filmmakers have already proven that. Even without subtitles, I had no problem in following the story and ended up enjoying it as a whole. Go, book your tickets soon!
  • Horror and mystery movies needs to get you hooked from the starting but for me this started with disinterest , just before climax it gets me slightly interested and by the end of it I felt dissatisfied with the convenient screenplay they have used to merge the 2-3 genres they have used .

Chanchala(Anushka shetty) is an IAS officer, who is undergoing trial for murder of her husband . CBI on orders of State Chief Minister take her from jail and confine her to a haunted place for questioning her about her Ex boss - a minister suspect of corruption and stealing idols from temple. Mysterious things start happening in that house where the brother of her deceased husband was supervising her stay.

It has same cliched 2-3 comic characters to give comic touch during the horror scenes and a screenplay full of loopholes.

All characters were decent to good , Anushka stand out especially in scenes where she gets possessed by Bhaagmaathi's soul.

Props , camera angles and Background music is good for horror and thrilling scenes but as they say , these can enhance the impact of a good screenplay but when the moves lacks a good screenplay or soul how would these things matter .

Unless you are an Anushka fan , this movie isnt worth wasting time . Its a 4/10 but giving 1 extra for Anushka's performance
  • A wonderful movie made me felt WOW while watching. The entire movie tied the audience to focus it, as there is no such distractions or unwanted stuffs. Each scene had its important, though some scenes are illogical and confusing.. that did not spoiled the interest. Wonderful architecture can be seen in the movie.. even little things will wonder us.. Like in a scene when anushka open the door a hand like lock will hold her hands that was really nice.. The entire palace and the ideology was awesome and it perfectly matched with the story.. Anushka's acting was brilliant and the credits should goes to the director. He utilized her talent well to renovate the movie. Such a good mysterious thriller movie in Tamil.

They Just put the twists for the sake of thrill by sacrificing basic sense. Making fool of audience by showing all the stuff first which later makes no sense at all after the twist. And then they cook up useless half boiled foolish forced explanations
  • If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? Just watch it! It is such a masterpiece & Anushka Shetty did a fantabulous job! Sucha great actor! Loved it so much! Everything about this movie is 10/10, i can go forever praising this iconic piece of art!

Remarkable performance from Anushka. You rock the show beauty. Kudos to the director for the screen play. The hero material could have been used in some other way but that was not a spoiler in the over all screen play. Asha sharath stands unique as usual and those imagining this with Arundati will definitely have a surprise. As a whole awesome entertainment and the central stage has been capitalized by the outstanding performance of Anushka.

So, I saw Bhaagamathie yesterday. I'm giving it 5 stars only for Anushka. The movie was rubbish. The only reason I watched it is because Anushka was starring in it. I love watching her in warrior princess roles. This was something like that. Well, there was a warrior princess. It's a one time watch, only if you want to know what the hell is going on in the movie. The trailer was quite intriguing.

Chanchala IAS played by Anushka is accused of murdering her boyfriend. She was the personal assistant to Minister Eshwar Prasad played by Jayaram. The CBI wants to nab the minister for fraud or something and decides that Chanchala is the best person to help them. They take her to an old, possibly haunted house (god knows why) for interrogation. They leave her locked up in that house at night, because apparently there's no way she could escape, right? They also leave two constables outside to guard her. Anyhoo, mysterious things begin to happen and she gets thrown around and beaten up by invisible forces and soon enough becomes possessed by the ghost of the queen of the house.

If you haven't watched the movie, *** DON'T READ ANYMORE; SPOILERS AHEAD*** Ending was a variation of The Usual Suspects. She used clues around her to make up a story and pretended to be possessed by Bhagamathie or pretend that she has a split personality disorder or something. Point is, nearly all of it was her doing. Here's my problem- the first time she showed that she was possessed, she was dressed in Bhaagamathie's sari. But merely 2 minutes before, she was dressed in her kurta and pants. Not possible. Then there was her attacking the doctor who came to examine her. The table had a ridiculously long table cloth. That was so the awesome scene of her transforming could happen. WHHHYYYYY?????? There were so many things in the movie that didn't make any sense with the ending we were given. Her bag of stuff was what someone gave her. It couldn't have the wires she needed to make it so that things were moving around on its own. There was one scene in the end when Asha Sarath's character finds one wire attached to a chair. The movie just pretended that was an explanation for everything we saw. It was not. What about the doors closing? Or her being pulled back into the room? Her ability to hit people so hard that they flew across the room? Where did she get identical substitutes for the stuff the exorcist left in the house? EEEGGGAAAAD!!!

If the writers had paid a little bit more attention, this would've been a good movie. There were just too many unanswered questions for me.

  • Movie will be better without love angle and 30mins less

Nice direction, best acting... love South Indian movies....
  • An absolute stunner movie.very good acting from each and every actor. some comedy punches were also good A must watch movie for thriller lovers 😍 The other directors should follow this movie to make a class suspense movie..... Totally loved it 💓💓💓💓
  • A political thriller setup that has been used to death in Indian films, a haunted house setup and even some of the shots reminding of Manichithrathaazhu, a brilliant Anushka reminding of her own Arundhati in the horror sequences, Malayalam actors in the other main roles and Tamil actors in the comic relief(?) roles in this Telugu film. Then there are the twists reminding of The Usual Suspects and Pizza then to get over that they use twists over twists till they contradict each other. On one hand there is this silly over the top script filled with ridiculous dialogues that moves from one preposterous scenario to another and on the other hand there is the capable cast who gives their best and pretty good production design but at the end it is easily one of the worst films of the year.

Story Chanchala (Anushka) is an IAS officer who works as personal secretary to irrigation minister (Jayaram). A lot of precious idols are stolen from temples. Irrigation minister who is an honest politician threatens the high command in a public meeting. Home department orders a CBI enquiry into this issue with an intention to frame irrigation minister in a scam. Chachala who is serving jail term for killing a guy is taken to a secret location of Bhaagamathie Bungalow for interrogation. Rest of the story is all about what happens in Bhaagamathie Bungalow. Artists Performance Bhaagamathie jeevi review Actors: Anushka is elegant as Chanchala. She is terrific in interval scene as Bhaagamathie. This is her 1st release after Baahubali 2 and it's nice to watch her on big screen again. Malayalam actor Jayaram does justice to the pivotal role of a politician. Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan Nair is okay as love interest of heroine. Malayalam actress Asha Sharath is good as a CBI officer. Dhanraj, Prabhas Seenu and Vidyulleka Raman provide entertainment and Dhanaraj's character is story driven. Murali Sharma is good as a cop. Director G Ashok comes up with strong characters and a screenplay that holds well. The basic story idea seems to have been taken from the Hollywood classic 'Usual Suspects'. Concept of narrating a fictitious horror story in a thriller came first in Telugu films with Pizza.

Though the screenplay of the film is good, the director has taken a few liberties. 'Usual Suspects' film is about telling an imaginary story by using the names/brands written on objects in that room. The investigators realise it after the suspect is let off. In 'Bhaagamathie' too, Anushka creates an imaginary story based on wordings and books in Bhaagamathie Bungalow and misleads the investigator. But in the process, the director has deliberately misled audiences in these two aspects

    1. Home Ministry sending an investigator without briefing her with the facts they have. (this is purely to make audience to presume that Jayaram is good and HomeMinistry/Govt is bad at the beginning of the film)

    2. The scenes in which Murali Sharma enters Bhagamathie Bungalow with an intention to shoot (Bhaagamathie nailing her palm, burning of the book etc). These scenes are shot to establish that Bhaagamathie is a ghost. Since it's not on spy cameras, it's only meant to convey to audiences (not to the investigator)

People wouldn't mind such scenes in a regular commercial film. But a content/screenplay based film like Bhagamathie, these misleading scenes may not go well with narrative!
  • Bhaagamathie is a perfect example of a film that starts in one vein and ends in another. Borrowing elements from films like Manichitrathazhu (1993) and The Usual Suspects (1995), it narrates the story of a murder convict and former IAS officer Chanchala (Anushka Shetty) who is locked inside a haunted mansion by the CBI so that they can question her about a minister (Jayaram) who they think is corrupt. With shades of the horror genre evident in the cinematography (jump scares) and the background music, the film situates itself on a plot that is crooked at best. Why would CBI choose such a location even when they don't want publicity? The contrived nature of the plot plays against the purpose of the film as the discerning viewer is already fed up with convenient storytelling. However, if you ignore this nature, Bhaagamathie can turn into a passable affair as pretty-faced Shetty leads the show with her subtle performance, supported heavily by the electrifying Jayaram. The first half manages to create a setup that you will expect more from in the second half, but unfortunately, it dilly dallies around for long before expediting the wrapping process. At the end, there are just one too many twists and turns for one to follow, giving you a feeling that Bhaagamathie is more of a cheap thriller than a horror film. If you have nothing better do and love either of the actors I mentioned, then this is a watchable film. Otherwise, skipping wouldn't hurt. TN.
  • So many twist beautifully executed. Hat's off. Best suspense movie till date in the Telugu film industry
  • I don't know how everyone liked the film!

I didn't enjoy it even one minute and has nothing interesting...

Not a worth watching. Over the top acting and sluggish and immature impractical storyline.
