Are you ready for the “splashiest season in herstory”?
MTV’s Emmy-winning reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race returns for its 17th regular U.S. season on Jan. 3, 2025. The 14 new queens range in age from 22 years old (Lana Ja’Rae) to 34 years old (Lexi Love), and all have vastly different levels of experience in high heels. The winning contestant who survives all of the “sashay aways” will gag over their $200,000 grand prize and earn the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.”
As usual, host/producer RuPaul Charles is joined at the judges’ table by Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews, and Ts Madison. Special guest judges throughout the competition will include famous faces like Katy Perry, Sandra Bernhard, Adam Lambert, Hunter Schafer, Jerrod Carmichael, Paul W. Downs, Quinta Brunson, Sam Smith, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
Just like last year, the participants will initially be ranking each other’s main challenge performances in a “Rate-a-Queen” segment,...

In 2015, the TV academy decided to split the variety series Emmy category into two separate ones in order to better recognize achievements in the talk and scripted subgenres. This year, there are 14 shows vying for spots in the Best Talk Series lineup. For comparison, the 2022 and 2023 ballots each included 19 hopefuls. Four of the series listed below will reap bids this year, giving each entrant pretty good odds.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 24 to cast their ballots for their favorite talk shows. Each person is limited to four choices, reflecting the number of eventual nominees. Which of the talk series listed below do you think will make the final cut on July 17?

There was much concern within the late-night community that there would only be three nominations for the Emmys’ Outstanding Talk Series category.
However, this morning as voting for nominations opened, it has emerged that the category will have four nominations thanks to 14 submissions in the category.
This means that the category has only lost one nomination slot from last year, as opposed to two, which was the worry before voting opened.
Last year, The Daily Show, then hosted by Trevor Noah, won the Talk Emmy, beating out Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Problem with Jon Stewart.
Emmy rules suggest that because there were 14 submissions, this is divided by four and rounded up so 3.5 turns into four nominations. Had there been one fewer submission, it would have only been three.

Mo also knows Q personally and agrees with Trixie that her looks are “ridiculous” because “the boy can sew,” thinks Morphine Love Dion was sickening “from the moment she walked in,” and that the Sapphira Cristál “stumble” last episode gives the other girls a chance to win.

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Jessica and Trixie agreed that Sapphira Cristál is a queen they would be intimidated to compete against because she’s so successful in many areas, and of course Trixie wanted to know Jessica’s thoughts on Morphine Love Dion‘s makeup skills. Referring to the mini challenge, Jessica said that Plane Jane is the most delusional on the cast and Trixie made the point that delusional drag queens are not a bad thing.

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Angeria backed Dawn and Morphine Love Dion up for being “so irritated” that they don’t have a challenge win to their name yet, but she was not forgiving of Nymphia Wind‘s ongoing reputation for feigning insecurity during challenge prep because it’s happened too many times. On her own chances competing in this challenge, Angeria said that she would have handled the “funk” aspect really well and she’s capable of singing and dancing. She also spoke very highly of...

In their recap of the episode, Luxx tells Trixie that she’s enjoying the new season and claims credit for the “Rate a Queen” twist because of how she rated the girls on her own season. Once again, Trixie wants to gag over how flawless Morphine Love Dion‘s makeup skills are and Luxx agrees that she’s “the mug of the season.” They also understand Dawn and Sapphira Cristál growing frustrated with their placements near the top because while they’re very good at their own crafts, other queens with more wins like Plasma, Q...

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.

In their recap of the episode, Orville tells Trixie that he’s watched the show since season one and she shares that he acts like a drag queen when they spend time together in their personal life. Orville calls season 5 his favorite of all time because of how classic their “Untucked” episodes were. The two share commentary on large makeup like Dawn‘s considering former contestants like Trixie, Mimi Imfurst and Bianca Del Rio had to explain their “club kid makeup” back then, but now queens like Dawn and the Methyd family just get to exist.

In their recap of the episode, Crystal confirms that she’s rooting for her Missouri sister Q and that after a few episodes she finally gets the “character” of Plane Jane and is hoping for her to get in a physical fight. Crystal likens Jane to her own drag family member Daya Betty, saying she “knows what she’s in there to do,” but admits that she doesn’t like “Burger Finger” and doesn’t have as clear of a point of view with her drag as other girls like Dawn and Plasma.

Following Friday’s fifth episode, season 14 queen Maddy Morphosis made her debut on the show and proved why she would be a great future host. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, both Trixie and Maddy gave Q grace for her emotional reaction to being safe yet again because they see her as someone so very close to a win that they can understand the sting of not getting it. When it comes to Plane Jane‘s villain edit, Trixie can appreciate that Jane shouldn’t “punch down” in her comments on Amanda Tori Meating‘s drag, but at the end of the day it’s making good cat fights that we haven’t seen on the show in a while.

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Trixie and Brittany liked Geneva Karr‘s entrance look, but were confused over whether her name is intended to be a pun or not and appreciated her pride in being a leg hair artist on the internet. When it came to the divisive Plane Jane, they both lived for her first impression look and think that only someone that looks that good could come in guns blazing. In their recap of the episode, Deja tells Bianca that she thinks Kahanna Montrese has been “killing it” on the runway and that Jessica Wild is the one keeping her entertained. Still, Bianca found time to point out how big of a fan Deja is of Bianca and then continued to make Deja fall out of her chair laughing throughout the episode. In their calmer moments, Deja was able to explain to Bianca that like Peppermint last week, the game should not be based on track record and each queen should play for themselves.

In their recap, Kornbread thought that queens who won their original “Snatch Game” competitions had the bigger task to live up to the expectation and queens who hadn’t competed in it before, like Lala Ri, were in a better position to perform well. Kornbread never got to do “Snatch Game” herself and told Bianca that she had planned to perform as Leslie Jordan or the Tiger King. Like other queens before her, Naomi also took offense to queens like Luxx Noir London and Loosey Laduca being so pressed about their placements, especially Loosey trying to count mini challenge wins in her record.
