I can't believe Hasbro ripped off My Little Pony!
I had heard over the grapevine that My little Pony: Equestria Girls was the best trilogy out there, but I bet to differ. For the longest time I thought I was watching Monster High, but then I was reminiscent of characters such as Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie. It was at that moment I realised I was watching a My Little Pony ripoff.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls is a three-part mini series that are all connected in some way. It kind of reminded me of Donnie Darko, where I wasn't sure I understood the episodes themes and characters. The stories are so complex that you would need to re-watch them all at least three times to really understand it. There is a scene where one of the characters comes out of a portal to the My little Pony universe. It is hilariously meta and self aware, like Rick and Morty. And the characters are also so relatable and likeable. I especially adore Twilight Sparkle, whose character is stereotypically nerdy and smart which really helps me identify and relate to her the most. I have no idea who Sunset Shimmer or Starlight Glimmer are, but god dam are they funny!
The villain of the series was also a great twist and really held the series together. I was not expecting this character to be the villain, it was as if M. Night Shyamalan secretly directed it, it was so good.
Overall, My Little Pony: Equestria Girls is a fantastic mini series that really improves the quality of Monster High and was not something I expected to like. However, I cannot forgive Hasbro for shamelessly ripping off My Little Pony and for that I have to give it a 1 star.
