In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

Nearly six years after the release of his last comedy special, Adam Sandler is returning to Netflix with “Adam Sandler: Love You.” The comedy special directed by “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems” co-director Josh Safdie will premiere globally on the streamer Aug. 27.

The first trailer for the special shows Sandler in a surprisingly intimate theater rather than a large arena. After joking with the audience a bit, he gets down to the brass tacks of what everyone can expect.

“Anyway, I talk a lot and then I sing and then we do a bunch of s–t. All right, so here it goes,” Sandler says.

The ever-moving camera then cuts between Sandler onstage with mic in hand, closeups of him signing shirts and a car driving away as its being chased by a crowd of people. “We’ve lost control,” Sandler says as a dog appears from backstage and happily greets the audience.

Suzanne Shepherd, an actor known for her roles in “The Sopranos” and “Goodfellas,” died Friday morning in her home in New York City, her agent confirmed to Variety. She was 89.

Shepherd portrayed Mary DeAngelis, the mother of Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco), in HBO’s crime drama series “The Sopranos,” as well as the mother of Lorraine Bracco’s character Karen Hill in 1990’s “Goodfellas.” She also had roles in “Jacob’s Ladder” (1990), “Trees Lounge” (1996), “Lolita” (1997), “American Cuisine” (1998), “Living Out Loud” (1998), “Requiem for a Dream” (2000), “A Dirty Shame” (2004), “Harold” (2008), “The Week Of” (2018) and “The Performance” (2023), among other films.

Kevin James’ new Netflix comedy “Home Team,” inspired by the life of NFL head coach Sean Payton, has drafted the rest of its cast.

There’s still no release date for the fourth season of the widely acclaimed “Fargo,” but FX Networks’ latest teaser for the upcoming season promises an installment as hilarious as it is action-packed.

The new teaser, titled “Big Fish,” primarily consists of criminals threatening violence, interspersed with slapstick comedy — be it four adults awkwardly hanging out on see-saws or someone haplessly tripping on a pile of snow. The 30 seconds of material offer little in the way of revealing plot details, but there’s more than enough gun-toting and goofiness to warrant plenty of excitement for the upcoming season, whenever it ends up premiering.

Proving that taste is somewhat relative, Netflix subscribers have reportedly consumed over 2 billion hours of Adam Sandler material since the 2015 release of his movie The Ridiculous 6 on the streaming platform. Sandler, who has a deal with Netflix for original content, has produced the likes of The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, The Week Of, Murder Mystery, and 100% Fresh since 2014, and has four new movies in development. What, then, can account for the un-satiable interest in Sandler’s output among Netflix subscribers?

Although the Happy Madison pics for Netflix have been routinely slammed by critics, they’ve been delivering significant audiences to the streaming site, and also featured in the most popular overall content on the platform last year with Murder Mystery. In terms of Sandler’s popularity, we were surprised (and even a little dismayed) by Netflix extending his deal in 2017, but the millions of people turning up for his comedies may actually be onto something.

Netflix is quadrupling down on Adam Sandler, signing a four-film deal with the noted filmmaker and his studio Happy Madison Productions.

In announcing the deal, Netflix said that its subscribers have spent 2 billion hours watching Sandler films since 2015, which is when the streamer premiered Ridiculous 6 -- Sandler’s first Netflix film. All told, Sandler has created six films for the streamer to date: The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, The Week Of, Murder Mystery, and still-to-come Hubie Halloween -- which will arrive on the streamer later this year. (Hubie Halloween is a family title co-starring Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, and Maya Rudolph).

According to Netflix, audiences have spent two billion hours watching his films since 2015, when “The Ridiculous 6” premiered. Additionally, the streamer noted that “Murder Mystery” was the most popular film on Netflix last year.

Netflix has struck another four-film renewal deal with Adam Sandler as the service unleashed a volley of larger-than-life statistics, claiming among other things that subscribers have spent two billion hours watching Sandler’s films since 2015.

The pact with Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions follows an original four-film deal in 2014 that was itself renewed for a further four in 2017.

When it comes to combined star power, Netflix’s “The Week Of” can hardly compete with “The Avengers”, and yet this latest reteaming of the two former “Saturday Night Live” comedians should earn its share of eyeballs this weekend, at least among those who weren’t clever enough to get their “Avengers: Infinity War” tickets in advance. Meanwhile, it allows Sandler to cross off yet another commitment in his eight-picture deal with Netflix — a steady source of mediocrity briefly interrupted by the release of Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” last year, in which the actor reminded everyone of his actual potential.

Back in autopilot mode, Sandler phones in what may qualify as the lowest-concept comedy of his career — which, thankfully, is not the same as the lowest point in his career. He and his “Longest Yard” co-star play fathers...
