In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

Horror Feature “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded” to Premiere in June: "Writer/Director Scott Bryan’s puppet-filled existential horror feature, “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded,” will have its two-weekend world premiere this June.
“My (Best Friend’s) Head Exploded” is a rebellious, existential, terrifyingly messy puppet feature made out of material things by actual people. It tells the story of Lydia, a coming-of-ageless vampire forced to deal with the loss of her best friend, Sam, after the pair conjures a moment of complete clarity which causes Sam’s head to explode.
In the aftermath, Lydia must contend with old ghosts, generational trauma, oppressive authority figures, and the confusing fear of infinity to set reality right and save her own sanity.
“I love making weird stuff that a studio would be afraid of and a computer couldn’t replicate,” Bryan said.
The film will show at the Salem Witch Board Museum in Salem,...

Yellow Veil Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to “The Becomers,” a genre-bending comedy written and directed by Zach Clark. The company will launch the film at the Marche Du Film in Cannes this week. “The Becomer” tells the story of a body-snatching alien who comes to Earth, reconnects with their partner, and tries to find their way in modern America.
“During the pandemic, I binged the original ‘Star Trek’ series for the first time and then I made this movie” Clark said about his latest film. “It felt like life as we knew it was ending, but then again, it also felt like that might not be the worst thing either. ‘The Becomers’ is a story of love, longing, and alienation. A kitsch-soaked, pathos-laden melodrama about our sad, sad planet. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever made and I can’t think of anyone better than Yellow Veil...

Arriving in theaters and on VOD platforms everywhere on Friday, September 14th is writer/director Michael Tully’s Don’t Leave Home, his thoughtful and thrilling exploration of the obsessive nature of art and the lengths one will go to feed their creative beast. Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Tully about the project, and he discussed the inspirations behind his story, collaborating with his tight-knit cast, how an Edm (electronic dance music) festival threw their location plans for a loop, and much more.
Great to speak with you, Michael. In terms of the story, was there something that you based this on that's from some urban legends or local myths, or was this something purely from your own imagination?
Michael Tully: It's kind of a combination of both. I could list 20 different reasons why I wanted to make this movie, what it means to me, but...

"You might hear some strange things... don't pay any attention to it." Cranked Up Films has released an official Us trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Don't Leave Home, the latest feature from filmmaker Michael Tully. This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and it also played at the Sarasota, Montclair, and Galway Film Festivals. Don't Leave Home is about an American artist's obsession with a disturbing urban legend that takes her to an investigation of the story's origins at the crumbling estate of a reclusive painter in Ireland. It's being called "Get Out with Catholic guilt in the Irish countryside" and a film that proves "not all mysteries should be solved." The film's cast includes Anna Margaret Hollyman, Lalor Roddy, Helena Bereen, David McSavage, and Karrie Cox. I like all the shots of the animals creepily staring at her. The film looks quite good, I will admit, and fairly creepy.

There's almost enough exposition before the main title appears in Don't Leave Home to fill most movies. But writer-director Michael Tully dispatches that challenge with brisk economy, laying intriguing foundations for a story in which religion, urban legend, dreams and surreal waking nightmares collide in a landscape both beautiful and unsettling. While this twisty tale of an "evil miracle" connected to a self-exiled former priest ultimately withholds too much to resolve all of its enigmas, the atmospheric mood and persuasive performances keep you watching. It's definitely on the more subdued end of the Irish horror spectrum, but that shouldn't keep...
