Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

“True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.
Sophie Butcher (Empire) observed: “Moore is on great form here. She spits out profanities and ultimatums in a clipped, crisp accent, wearing...

Robert Pattinson impressed the DC fans with his Bruce Wayne/Batman portrayal in The Batman. Challenging him in the movie was the Caped Crusader’s old rival, The Riddler, which Paul Dano portrayed. Given that it garnered positive acclaim amid a time when many were going through superhero fatigue, the latter seems to have a definite answer.

Variety reports that HBO is developing a limited series based on Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places. If that strikes a chord, you might remember that Dark Places was previously adapted into a film starring Charlize Theron. The film received mediocre reviews and only grossed $5.1 million upon its release in 2015, so it’s entirely understandable if you don’t remember it.
The logline of the novel, which was originally published in 2009, states: “Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in the famous 1985 ‘Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.’ She survived—and famously testified that her teenage brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, a pair of mother/daughter true crime ‘detectives’ locate a grownup Libby and pump her for details, believing that Ben is innocent. Libby, having spent her youth working the talk show circuit, hopes to once again turn a profit off her tragic history:...

Despite the seemingly Christmassy title, Nutcrackers does not appear to represent David Gordon Green aiming to make a new festive classic. What it does, however, represent is him luring Ben Stiller back to a lead role for the first time in several years for his new comedy drama.
Written by Leland Douglas, Nutcrackers follows the work-obsessed Mike (Stiller), who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to look after his four rambunctious nephews after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day trip to find foster care turns into weeks of farm-life mayhem — and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.

Ben Stiller has found his first starring role in several years in David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers. More details here:
Ben Stiller has signed on to star in David Gordon Green’s next project, titled Nutcrackers, as reported by Deadline. Stiller will also be producing the film through his production company, Red Hour Films.
Nutcrackers is currently in production in Ohio, but this is the first we’re hearing about it. Green has been busy rebooting the Halloween and The Exorcist franchises, the latter which will keep him busy until the release of The Exorcist: Deceiver, the sequel to this year’s The Exorcist: Believer, in 2025.
Stiller has recently been focusing on work behind the camera. The Zoolander actor executive produced and directed six of the nine episodes of the first season of Severance for AppleTV+ recently and also directed all episodes of Escape at Dannemora for Showtime. Stiller hasn...

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Patricia Arquette is an Emmy favorite nowadays, and she’s not even “High Desert’s” most decorated performer. Between her, Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”), Rupert Friend (“Homeland”) and Bernadette Peters (“Ally McBeal”), the main cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming comedy series from “Miss Congeniality” writer Katie Ford and creative partners Nancy Fichman and Jennifer Hoppe-House has a total of 16 acting nominations and five wins.
Set in Yucca Valley, California, “High Desert” follows addict and former dealer Peggy Newman (Arquette), who decides to become a private investigator following her mother’s (Peters) death. Along Peggy’s hazardous journey toward self-discovery, she meets the uptight business owner who hires her (Garrett) and an anchorman-turned-desert-shaman (Friend). Other characters include her on-and-off parolee lover (Matt Dillon), best friend (Weruche Opia) and sister (Christine Taylor).

Patricia Arquette needs a change of pace, not to mention a car that isn’t crumpled, in the first full trailer for Apple TV+’s High Desert.
The eight-episode dark comedy series is set to launch May 17 from director Jay Roach and executive producer Ben Stiller. Arquette stars as Peggy, a former drug dealer and recovering addict who seeks a new path after her mother’s death and decides to become a private investigator in the desert town of Yucca Valley, California.
At one point in the trailer, Arquette’s character gets grilled about her past and admits to having sold marijuana but fires back after she’s accused of dabbling in cocaine. “Well, that was much later, and I did it — I didn’t sell it,” she clarifies.
Matt Dillon co-stars as Peggy’s ex, Denny, who has his own criminal past, and the trailer shows his rousing pep talk: “This is the time,...

The Emmy winner collaborates again with “Severance” and “Escape at Dannemora” director Ben Stiller for Apple TV+ dark comedy “High Desert.” Arquette plays Peggy, an on-again-off-again addict who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother, with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator.
Matt Dillon, Christine Taylor, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, Rupert Friend, and Keir O’Donnell also star in the series. “High Desert” is created and written by Nancy Fichman (“Grace and Frankie”), Katie Ford (“Miss Congeniality”), and Jennifer Hoppe (“Nurse Jackie”), who all also serve as executive producers. Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”) directs all eight episodes of the half-hour series.

The Emmys are suckers for limited and anthology series based on true events. Since the academy made consequential tweaks to its eligibility rules in 2015, 35 limited/anthology series dramatizing real-life happenings have received at least one citation in any above- or below-the-line category. Twelve of those were nominated just last year, when a whopping 25 of 43 total slots in the above-the-line limited or anthology series/TV movie races were occupied by fact-based shows. While such a clear domination of one particular genre feels like it should be a one-off, its recurrence this year is likelier than you might think.
According to our (very) early combined odds, which are currently only forecasting the series and acting races, 18 of the 30 limited or anthology series/TV movie slots will be taken up by fact-based shows. Find these shows plus the nominations they are each expected to scoop up right below.

How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.

Jessica Chastain took home the limited/TV movie actress prize at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for “George & Tammy,” defying the odds, where she was in fourth place. Not only did Chastain stop Amanda Seyfried‘s awards run for “The Dropout,” but it ended a six-year streak of one person sweeping the winter awards in this category.
The previous six years have seen Sarah Paulson, Nicole Kidman, Patricia Arquette, Michelle Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and Kate Winslet in collecting the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and SAG Award in the early months of a new year. This annual one-woman supremacy was a hard pivot from 2016, when three people took home these three awards. The Golden Globes infamously went with Lady Gaga for “American Horror Story: Hotel,” while Kirsten Dunst prevailed at Critics Choice for the second season of “Fargo” and the SAG Awards crowned Queen Latifah for the HBO film “Bessie.

With 17 of the last 20 DGA Award winners going on to secure the Oscar for Best Director, the Director’s Guild of America plays a pivotal role in who wins an Academy Award. Momentum is key for film’s grueling winter awards circuit, and now we’ll wait and see if Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have enough to make it 18 of the last 21.
In TV, there is no waiting — not this year. While the DGA Awards can certainly play their part in the Emmy race — having boosted future darlings like “Succession,” “Watchmen,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” — the 2023 winners already had their shot at Emmy glory. Nominations may still prove valuable to freshman series like “Wednesday” and “The Bear” (not to mention “Better Call Saul’s” last chance to win its first Emmy), but Saturday night’s ceremony will have little to no effect on what’s next.

Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.
Reps for Stiller and Sony did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment, but according to Variety, Stiller is set to lead the production company's forthcoming series.

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.

Tomorrow, the guild will announce its full film nominations, including its lauded First Feature.
The DGA Awards are voted on by over 18,000 members of the guild. The 2022 nominees include TV series broadcast between March 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022. Voting for the awards occurred between December 9, 2022, and January 6, 2023.
First question: Did members of the Director’s Guild watch any TV dramas this winter? The Dramatic Series field is stocked with long-time DGA favorites in Vince Gilligan, who snagged a nomination for “Better Call Saul’s” final season, Jason Bateman, who earned his third nomination for “Ozark,” and Ben Stiller, who won for “Escape at Dannemora” in 2019. But rather than spotlight new series like “House of the Dragon” or “Andor,” the final two...

Months after achieving what was widely considered an easy Primetime Emmy win for Hulu’s “The Dropout,” Amanda Seyfried is now poised to sail through the rest of this awards season as the recipient of every major Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress prize. By the end of February, she can pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild trophies for her portrayal of biotech fraudster Elizabeth Holmes and thus emulate five other women who have each collected all four pieces of hardware for a single non-continuing program performance.
The very first Critics Choice Award for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was bestowed upon Julianne Moore in 2012 for her work as Sarah Palin in “Game Change.” She then similarly triumphed at the Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG Awards over the next seven months. She remains the only woman to receive all four of these awards for a...

A week after picking up a Best Limited/TV Movie Actress nomination at the Critics Choice Awards for “The Dropout,” Amanda Seyfried added a Golden Globe nomination on Monday. Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations are still a month away, but the actress is the runaway favorite there as well. Should she score all three trophies in January and February, it will mark the seventh consecutive year in which one person swept the winter awards in this category.
Seyfried, who won the Emmy in September for her turn as Elizabeth Holmes on the Hulu series, would follow Sarah Paulson, Nicole Kidman, Patricia Arquette, Michelle Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and Kate Winslet. 2016 was the last time no one went three for three in limited/TV movie actress — in fact, there were three different winners: Lady Gaga‘s instantly memed Golden Globe victory for “American Horror Story: Hotel,” Kirsten Dunst at Critics Choice for...

Who would have expected that Derek Zoolander himself would end up becoming one of today's most prominent dramatic storytellers? In recent years, Ben Stiller has set his comedic aspirations aside for an emphasis on prestige television. He directed the entirety of the riveting prison break miniseries "Escape at Dannemora" and the psychological thriller "Severance." If you've been paying attention, it's been clear that Stiller is a creative storyteller who knows how to surprise an audience. It's only a surprise to see the new direction in his career because he's always been making us laugh so much.
In the late 1990s, a group of comic actors known as the "Frat Pack" began to dominate mainstream comedy. While the careers of Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Steve Carrell, Jack Black, and Paul Rudd were fairly consistent, Stiller managed to mix in a variety of independent projects alongside mainstream studio films. Although...

Over the past seven years, Patricia Arquette has pulled off the impressive feat of scoring three Golden Globe wins in as many acting categories. After first being honored with the 2015 Best Film Supporting Actress prize for “Boyhood,” she received two television trophies for her work on the limited series “Escape at Dannemora” and “The Act”. Now, her dramatic performance on Apple TV+’s “Severance” could lead to her second supporting TV victory, which would make her only the fourth actress to ever achieve four Golden Globe wins in less than a decade.
Discounting non-competitive awards, the first woman to become a four-time acting Golden Globe champ in under 10 years was Helen Hunt. Her 1998 Best Film Actress win for “As Good As It Gets” was preceded by a trio of Best TV Comedy Actress triumphs for “Mad About You” (1994-1995; 1997). Her record of four victories across a four-year span was later matched by Sarah Jessica Parker,...

In 2021 Gillian Anderson won a Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for “The Crown” 24 years after taking home the corresponding lead prize for “The X-Files.” This made her the fifth woman to earn TV academy honors for both lead and supporting dramatic work, after Patricia Wettig (“Thirtysomething”), Tyne Daly (“Cagney & Lacey”; “Christy” and “Judging Amy”), Allison Janney (“The West Wing”) and Julianna Margulies (“ER”; “The Good Wife”). This year, past Best Drama Actress winner Patricia Arquette has a shot at becoming the sixth member of this group if she triumphs on her supporting bid for Apple TV+’s “Severance.”
