  • Nice depiction of our real war heros. Shows we too have our fare share of women warriers.
  • At first, hope this movie does not damage the old legends in any wrong way.

One of Kangana's best. Have seen her other movies and it is good to know that she is a multi-talented actress. Make-up and Costumes did not make the audience tired; also the graphics and stunts are at a good level.

Some have mentioned this movie has created an ordinary Queen as a Queen with superpowers. But when seeing the movie all I could think of her as a super Queen. Even without all that stunts, what she had done is outstanding. Her bravery, her courage, her confidence... of course she is a legendary person. Cannot understand what is so harmful when adding some sugar to praise such a great character.

Hope to see another good work soon.
  • MANIKARNIKA REVIEW :-

Indian History is always something where every Film-maker try to find a story which should be liked by audience. Then how could a story of The Queen Of Jhansi, Rani Laxmibai left out? If not today then tomorrow someone would have surely made a film on it as we all know it is a Potential Story to make a Great Film. Team Manikarnika Glorifies this Great story in thier stucked and average execution.

The first half of the film is nothing less than a Fiasco where you keep waiting for Quality but you never find it. At one point it even feels like this one might turn out to be a huge disappointment. But somehow the second half does the job, it saves Manikarnika from that Debacle tag and pushes it to safe Average mark. And there also most of the credit goes to the Actual Story which happened 170 years ago. Thanks to the sympathy which goes to the Legacy of Rani Laxmibai and her Bravery despite knowing that the film is not justifying her standard upto that level. It was a Script with Potential of turning it into a Best Historic Film of Bollywood but the entire team of Manikarnika Misses this Opportunity.

Kangana Ranaut as Manikarnika doesn't look like the one in the first half, she looks a cute and sweet doll. Then in 2nd half you see real anger and that enthusiasm in Kangana. Supporting cast could have been much better, so does the direction. I could even say that Make-up man does a better job than Director. Writer too doesn't bring anything interesting, neither in script nor in screenplay. Dialogues are much better comparatively, though. Execution is mediocre, it has unnecessary loudness, poor VFX, goofs, loo breaks, couple of songs on wrong occasions etc. Overall, Manikarnika is a Golden Opportunity missed, and reason could be the pressure of handling big story of big name from the history, so big responsibility it was aftreall. But still the questions appears that it had all the needed ingredients like story, budget, production value, canvas, everything then why? This one is still watchable for some Goosebumps moments of Pride, war, patriotism and our Precious History.

    RATING - 5/10*
  • Kangana's brilliance is a slap on all haters. What intensity, what valour Kangana showed in this brilliant film, awestruck. After a long time enjoyed a film in the cinema this much, literally had goosebumps while watching this film. Only Kangana could have done this amazing acting and directing (70%) at the same time, no other actor male or female is on a par with Kangana Ranaut. She proved it once again that she is exceptional and on another level, sheer brilliance, prowess and aptitude. While watching the film, I couldn't see Kangana anywhere, only manikarnika, Jhansi ki Rani. Another national award definitely coming her way for sure.
  • Movie has really down the expectations.Bad direction.Such good actors but it seems Kangna is alone doing everything and wanted to be seen in every scene. Movie is slow and boring. To an extent background music is somewhere adding good flavour in the movie.Dialogues has no impact. Such a strong theme but Kangna this time have not done justice with the role.

Literally, by the end of the movie my brain had been blown to bits - in a good way that is. The second half of the movies is so shockingly intense that I, for one, wanted to join in the battle, particularly because I saw the movie on a big screen. And that seems to be the main goal of the film-makers here - bring the legend of the great warrior queen, sensationalized not only by historical records but also a famous Hindi poem by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, alive on screen, so that you can live the experience of the events that occurred more than one and a half century ago. And how the film succeeds in doing so!

Performance (especially Kangana, though the supporting cast is exceptional too), costumes, score, cinematography - everything in the film works very well. Editing could have been better - in many places, the events feel disjointed, though admittedly, because the screenplay had to jump places, I cannot imagine what could have been done to make it more easy-flowing. Kangana;'s performance goes a full arc from an innocent but brave teenager, a wife and lover, a mother and to finally a patriotic warrior, and she nails every shade with priceless facial expressions.

To be clear, if you are expecting a multilayered biopic that explores the Rani's character in depth, this movie is not that and it is very obvious that the film-makers did not have that goal in mind. The Rani is therefore depicted somewhat like a real-life superwoman from the annals of history, and just like 'Gandhi' did for Karamchand Gandhi, everything in the film, including the supporting cast, has the sole purpose of polishing that image of Rani Laxmibai's as a virtuous warrior and a superwoman. I think it is very important for the audience to understand what expectations to go into the theater with.

Having said that, it should be mentioned that the audience will be treated to a pretty well-depicted backstory of the Rani's life in the first half - before she became the "veerangana" who fought the British. It would not be incorrect to say that if you love emotional drama, the first is your half of the movie and if you love action, the second is your half.

To conclude, you are in for a huge treat if you are Kangana's fan and if you have loved movies like 'Braveheart', 'Gladiator' and '300' - this movie glorifies the Rani's saga in pretty much the same manner that '300' glorified that of the Spartans.
  • Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi will raise your patriotic feelings and expand your chest to 56 inches or even more.

Kangana breathes Fire & Fury in her role as the iconic Rani of Jhansi! That she herself has directed the film (although not necessarily fully) puts her in a different league - with other actresses "looking up at her with awe"! LOL!

Story is not 100% true! Some portions might be fictional!

I'd have preferred a realistic presentation - without too much Glamour and Melodrama. Like in those dumb & glamorous TV serials...in this film too, ladies are wearing Make-ups at all times. Ridiculous!

Special effects are NOT that realistic, esp. the Cannon Balls banging on the walls of the Fort. It clearly looks artificial! Even the long trail of fire on the ground during the War looks artificial and the soldiers are clearly shown stepping on it. LOL!

Cinematography gives us a colourful canvas of visual splendour. The sets are Majestic and 100% Royal!

The acting of the English actors is poor! It looks very "stagey" and the dialogs contrived!

Finally, there is TOO much of Violence and explicit scenes of bodily injuries! Strange that no one is objecting to that! After all, this wonderful movie is for everyone. Therefore, such gory show of bodily harm should have been avoided altogether.

Why the hell is it ok to show explicit violence, but not Nudity and explicit Sex? Even if the latter is shown, the films gets "A". The same standard should be applicable to explicit Violence!
  • While the story tries to stay on the historical facts, over dramatics tends to lose focus and makes the movie disinteresting. The 3 stars are for good set/cinematography, veteran actors & Kangana.
  • Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is a biographical account of how Rani Laxmibai waged a war against the East India Company.

Manikarnika starts with Amitabh Bachchan's booming baritone where he throws light on how the riches of India are fast being plundered by the British. Within seconds, we are led into the world of Manikarnika through Kangana Ranaut's imposing screen presence.

Kangana captivates your attention in every frame and grows from strength to strength as the film progresses. This is clearly one of her best performances.

The narrative of the film directed by Kangana Ranaut and Krish, stays on course showing the internal struggle within Jhansi's royal family and unraveling important historical events during the 1800s. Some incidents like the Meerut Sepoy mutiny of 1857 are used as reference points, but the focus remains on Jhansi's rebellion against the British.

Film succeeds in stoking the patriotic passion within the audience without being too overbearing.

The second half is where the real drama unfolds with scenes on the battlefield, intense action sequences, bloody killings, escape, loss and triumph.

There aren't much dull moments in this rousing war drama.

Overall, Manikarnika is a well-made film that highlights Kangana's prowess as an actor.

Short of an epic, this larger-than-life war drama has enough valour and spirit to keep you engaged in these pages of history.

    Worth a watch..!!
  • Manikarnika has everything, but lacks the same intensity of direction almost for the first 40 minutes. It is noticeable, had this movie been in the hands of a more experienced director, this could have been improvised here and there. I cannot conclude that the movie hasn't much to offer the audience as well, even in those first 40 minutes. But the direction seems a cracked spell at times during the movie which seems crackled further through poor VFX during few instances. Songs are amazing, which is as a matter of fact drew me to the theater. Shankar Ehsaan Loy are back with a bang, that has complimented Prasoon Joshi's lyrics so rightly. But what is lacking, is timing in the movie. Songs seem a bit too many in the movie which would have sounded even better if their gelling with the flow of the movie was better. Songs should always be rightly placed, and must compliment the movie rather than being an impediment to its flow, is what I believe.

Having said that, there is no doubt that the battle scenes, scenes with weaving battle strategics are commendable. Kangana Ranaut has proved yet again that she can mold into any character that comes to her in making. Supporting crew has done their job great. A one time watch, and lore to sing in bits for a long time, for sure.

A very poorly researched movie that focused more on Kangana preening than in bringing out the depth of Rani Laxmibai's character. I was looking forward to this movie from the first time I heard of it. And after watching Kangana in Queen, I thought she would blow my mind away. Unfortunately, her focus was more on preening and pouting in most scenes (except the war scenes which were the only good parts of the movie). Very very disappointing.
  • After much controversy and hiccups, Manikarnika -The Queen Of Jhansi finally sees the light of the day in the theater and after watching the war drama, the only thing which came to mind - SUPERB !!!

Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi is a story of popular freedom fighter, Rani Laxmibai, who sacrificed her life fighting the British soldiers in the pre-independence era.

Directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi and partly by Kangana Ranaut, Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi will grab your attention right from the beginning as the hefty voice of Amitabh Bachchan breaks through the clouds and tells the story of how East India Company divided and conquered India. The entry scene of Kangana Ranaut is sparking while the subsequent scenes of her marriage to the Maharaja Of Jhansi (Jishu Sengupta) and her interaction with British soldiers are solid. First half does gets interrupted by frequent songs which could be trimmed (especially when Kangana Ranaut bursts into a dance at the village). However, the scene before the interval where she transforms herself and vows to protect Jhansi from the clutches of British is just mind-blowing. This might be the first time when I heard audience whistling and clapping for an actress.

The second half starts with Rani Laxmibai evacuating the fortress as the British officers threaten but she comes back with a bang after getting adequate support from local people. She finally recruits the women from her village and trains them to fight the British officers. The war scene between the British army and Jhansi's soldiers is well-executed especially the scene where Rani Laxmibai drags the officer into her fortress. While the screenplay drags little bit but the climax scene is beautifully shot especially the scenes involving Kangana sword-fighting. I felt that ending scene where Rani Laxmibai died in the battle ground could have more impact and intensity which was missing. Also, the CGI was poor especially when Rani Laxmibai decides to engulf herself into the flames rather than surrendering to the British army. Also, except for "Bharat" (mind-blowing lyrics by Prasoon Joshi and tune given by Shankar Eshaan Loy) none of songs stand out in this epic drama. Few factors makes a negative impact to the film - the length of the film (2 hours 28 minutes), loose editing and unnecessary inclusion of songs. Manikarnika is well-written by KV Vijayendra Prasad (Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan)

Nevertheless, the art direction is eye-catching. Each and every frame is beautiful depicted on the silver screen while cinematography captures the exotic locales of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The production design is eye-catching and will take you back to the forgotten history. The costume-design is mesmerizing while the background score was very good. The sets looked grandeur and magnificent and did have shades of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. The action sequence is brilliantly choreographed by the Hollywood choreographer Nick Powell who was the stunt coordinator in films like X-Men: The Last Stand and The Last Samurai.

I could not imagine anyone apart from Kangana Ranaut playing the powerful character of Rani Laxmibai. What will catch your attention is the impeccable transformation from Manikarnika into Rani Laxmibai as the reels moves forward. Kangana Ranaut looked perfect as a Rani Laxmibai as she makes her grand entry and spits venom as she fights the British soldiers. The fiery looks in her eyes and the commanding voice will make you fall in love with her wonderful performance. Ankita Lokhande makes a good debut. Danny Denzongpa as Ghouse Baba is superb. Jishu and Mishti Mukherjee does well in small role. However, Atul Kulkarni and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub does not get much scope.

Manikarnika The Queen Of Jhansi is definitely a good watch if you are a fan of Indian History and Kangana Ranaut. It should be lauded for bold direction, exemplary CGI and commendable performances. Good 3.5/5
  • The production of this film was a big mess. But still a good effort was made to portray Rani LaxmiBai's epic persona on Big Screen. Kangana leads the movie with a mighty performance, properly embracing the courage & rage of her. The dialogues are mostly well written except the parts where British officers speak. Some of the action scenes were done well, others were awful. Some songs were totally unnecessary, supporting actors didnt have much to do but the actors gave credible performances. Overall an above average movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
    This movie was a DISASTER!!

I've watched Krish moves before and loved how he can transfer emotions - Vedam, Gamyam are two solid examples

But with Manikarnika - first half was like a bunch of remotely related stories / scenes patched together to make some sense

I was about to leave after the first half, but my sister wanted to continue watching

Second half only gets worse. When Kangana tries to inspire women to join her army, she Bart delivers two lines of dialogues and scores of women begin chanting "har har mahadev". That's not how it's done! Remember the Chak De locker room speech by SRK?

Same disappointing show when Kangana goes to Gwalior to strip him off his kingdom. She barely says 15-18 words and the king agrees to abandon his kingdom and leave! Seriously!!??

They tried hard to portray Kangana as a valorous princess like Jhansi Laxmi Bai - but that emotion NEVER comes across

All in all - I'm giving it 2 stars because I like Krish and don't see any other reason for this movie to receive any better reviews
  • My Rating : 7/10

I honestly wanted another 30 minutes before the credits rolled as I thoroughly enjoyed the slow-burning narrative and felt immersed in the movie! It also feels like an early 2000's movie and those were all 3 hours plus.

The simple story, on-point performances, beautiful locations, characters, dialogues, costumes needn't be rushed through and like wine required a bit more breathing and perhaps further expansion into an epic saga a la 'Gadar' or 'Lagaan' which are both 3 hours + ; that would have truly cemented the movie to an All-Time Blockbuster status.

My only critic would be that it needed to cater to non-Kangana fans through better management of audience engagement via other storylines, more interesting scenes/songs and developing other characters more.

For Kangana's fans - well, it's an ABSOLUTE treat! She's done justice to her role and really proves that you don't need a strong male lead for a Bollywood movie to be worth watching anymore.

Overall, a superbly crafted film with great dialogues - the team behind and in front of the scenes have all done extremely well - treading the line between commercial versus making a film with your heart and gut is difficult and the movie manages to follow both right til the end.

A VERY FINE BALANCING ACT INDEED.

Please go and see this movie. The sets, the acting, the dialogues, are all spot on. I am a fan of Kangana after watching this movie. Many scenes thrill you and chill you, you may even weep at times with tears rolling down your cheeks. You may exit the movie hall but the movie doesn't exit you easily .
  • Great storytelling with superb acting by kangana Please don't take this movie as history lesson that you have skipped in school.

I don't know why it is rated 7.2 on IMDb. I've loved Kangana for Queen and Tanu weds Manu series. But this movie was horrible. Neither did the movie had that zeal that is required from a war film nor did it had any acting or directing sense. There was no justice to the character. Sorry, but the movie was not upto the mark at all.
  • Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is truly a must watch blockbuster movie which gives us the essence of the sacrifices made by our ancestors so that we could live in a free country. It shows how a young girl who turned into a queen, broke all stereotypes while making all the sacrifices for the motherland. Coming onto the movie, the direction is absolutely beautiful. The cinematography has also been done beautifully and successfully connects us to that era where all these incidents took place. Before the release of the movie, their were some critics saying that Kangana Ranaut may not be perfect for the role. But I have to admit it that she has answered very well through her acting skills. Personally, after watching the movie, I can't think of any other actress who could have done this role better than Kangan Ranaut. All the war scenes, especially the sword fighting scenes have been beautifully choreographed. If their was one thing where the movie needed more attention, it was the visual effects. There were many scenes which could have had much greater impact with some better visuals. Other than that, the movie is simply awesome.
  • Amazing Movie. Feraless story of Jhansi ki rani. Very well acted by most of the actors. A Must see for Indian Patriots and Feminists.
  • Watched it last night. Unfortunately, I was taught history at school s could see that each scene was full of caricatures - several songs, religious chants, saffron dresses, designer bindis, women empowerment, punishing deshdrohis, proclamations of akhand bharat and of course cow protection. A respected freedom fighter gets depicted very poorly.

Came out with a splitting headache. If you like watching badly made over the top films, go for it. For the rest, dont fall for glowing fake reviews
  • Loved the whole direction, narration and dialogues were bit weak. Good work Danny,Kangana and other actors. Kangana made a great impact on movie and did justice to her role.
  • It's always tough to make a come back after few flops, it's always challenging when there's many walk-outs in the middle of filming, which further forces you to helm the project - A period film - do or die situation in all means and to add more miseries; when the entire environment around you is scheming and hostile. It takes Kangana Ranaut to once again rewrite her own trajectory, which once again propels North-bound and this time it's with Manikarnika.

Kangana Ranaut is the heart and soul of Manikarnika and none of her contemporary can ever come close to her, none could have performed like her. She retreated herself and lived as Jhansi Rani Laxmi Bai to retell the legacy and bravery which will forever remain in the hearts of Bharatvarsh's people.

Manikarnika is a well made film with good performances by all, Dialogues, BGM, VFX works goes well with the theme. Kangana excels even in her maiden directorial venture.

Though the first half drags and goes a bit slow with unwanted songs, but it's the second half which complements the cause. The war episodes, the action sequences are well choreographed.

PS: Shut the left-biased media and keep thronging to the movie halls to watch Nationalists films which are literally burning them. Many more in the offing in the coming months.
  • Please any filmmaker who is reading this, remake this title...I was always fascinated with the story of Rani Laxmi but this people ruined it...her voice is soo fake and she is not what I imagined as Rani! First of all movie was too long, and there were many scenes which can be edited out. The character development was a complete waste so you cant expect the movie to go smooth. Bad direction.
  • The movie is good but it could have been better. Weather it is directed by Kangana or Krish. They should improve themselves.Climax of the movie is better. Kangana is fantastic but the supporting cast is not upto the mark.
