  • Aanand L. Rai brings us back the iconic pair of 2015's hit movie- Dumb Lagake Haisha, that is Ayushman Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar. Each one has a successful movie in last month itself. So, it is obvious to expect high from this film.

Trailer shows the basic story line up. Mudit and Sugandha are going to be married, but before two days of their wedding, Mudit realizes he suffers from an erectile dysfunction, which almost sabotages their wedding after both the families get involved. Which also leads to some comical incidents. That's how the film goes to the completion.

Ayushman Khurrana is my most favorite man in the current lot. He actually lives the exact character every time and leaves you speechless! After the successful Bareily, this will also count in his hit list. Bhumi Pednekar is also enjoyable. Toilet has more work for Bhumi, but here, she has to just support Ayushman, and she does a great job. This pair deserves your love this time and for the time to come, too. We also have to appreciate the work done by supporting cast in this type of films. So claps for all the actors! Music is suitable only in the film, otherwise not a single song is worth a download. I liked the Sainyaa song the most.

Dialogues and screenplay are worthy enough for the audience to not lost interest throughout the movie. Some scenes are extremely good! I liked the scene where Mudit reenters with his relatives to pleas Sugandha. I also got shocked to see Aanand Rai's favorite man's cameo in this film at the perfect moment. But, I could not be able to understand why they were shooting condom ad in Haridvar! LOL.

I request all the Adult people to go and watch this sweet movie. I wish girls should learn from the character of Bhumi to support your love unconditionally. I mean, that thing is required, but you have to understand His problems, too.

Overall, worth a watch. Bollywood is getting better with this kind of films in the remaining period of 2017.
  • Well, a very enjoyable film indeed in both style and execution, which works well as a romantic story even beyond the core issue it wants to deal with. The reason for it is probably that at the end of the day it is not really a core issue but just a plot element, and it's handled very subtly. What this film has going for it after all is its lovely romance and how beautifully it celebrates the Indian culture. Just to think that a decade before big banners were so pathetically obsessed with making films about Indians living abroad when there's so much to explore in India itself, which happens to be one of the most culturally rich places in the world. The film, through its nice story both embraces tradition in many ways but at the same time defies it more than once, making it an interesting study of the new life of Indian middle-class youth. They respect elders, they accept traditional customs of arranged marriages and everything that comes with it, but they have no qualms about premarital sex.

The film is technically impressive, it's natural and authentic, and above all it's humorous and wonderfully charming in its simplicity and comic tone. The dialogue is most casual and realistic, the story develops really well, and it manages to turn its core issue (the guy has what they call erectile dysfunction, a formal name for his actual struggle to engage spontaneously in sexual activity, probably due to being too nervous), as mentioned above, not all that central. It is the larger message of the story that provides a meaningful commentary on gender stereotypes of masculinity, on the pressure that new-age relationships place on today's often unassuming youth, and basically on the loss of innocence which manifests in over-exposure to the big world (and the west, in particular), and, in turn, demands everyone to meet some pretty high social expectations. It is this message of the film which thinking youngsters might like and relate to, and even the less thinking ones might become less judgemental.

All of what the film addresses is brilliantly encapsulated in Ayushmann Khuranna's compassionate performance. He manages to make his character an unlikely hero because he is as funny in his problem in the context of the story as he is touching in his obvious insecurity, always drawing the viewers' sympathy and affection. You really feel for him through his struggle and want him to get over it. What makes the story all the more so substantial in this regard is that he actually speaks about it (or hints at it), something few would probably do. His leading lady is the immensely pretty and likable Bhumi Pednekar, who is the right mix of sweet innocence and smart sophistication. Her gradual change throughout the story is very well done, and she shows great understanding and sensitivity. She really gives the vibes of a simple small-town girl. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a nice little film, a charming romantic comedy which is entertaining but also very educative and meaningful.

R.S. Prasanna remakes his tamil-hit Kalyana Samayal Saadham & gives us 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan'. And this hindi remake, is a deliightful ride!

'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' Synopsis: A couple ( Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar) fall in love but then the groom discovers that he suffers from erectile dysfunction. Chaos Ensures....

'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' humorously conveys stereotypes on masculinity & societal hypocrisy's. Hitesh Kewalya's Screnplay explores the journey of a couple dealing with an important issue, that ensures much chaos, not in their lives, but also in their respective lives. And its all done in a funny, yet affecting manner. This isn't a sex-comedy nor it does it ever get vulgar in its language, this is a family-friend romantic-comedy, made with the sensibility of ensuring a wide audience. And to their fortune, the film was roaring success last year upon its release!

R.S. Prasanna's Direction is wonderful. Cinematography is perfect. Editing, also, is credibly done. Art & Costume Design are well-done. Rachita Arora's Background Score is superb.

Performance-Wise: Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar are in very good form. Ayushmann enacts the man going through a serious problem, with the perfect blend of fear & care. Bhumi compliments Ayushmann all through & portrays the woman who must understand her lover's problem, despite societal pressures. In supporting roles, Seema Pahwa, Neeraj Sood, Supriya Shukla & Brijendra Kala are simply remarkable. Anshul Chauhan, also, leaves a strong impression.

On the whole, 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' is a small little gem, that demands a viewing. Strongly Recommended!
  • The Delhi setting looks so real. A difficult story is dealt with adeptly by the director and script writer. All characters are brilliant but Bhumi Pednekar stands out as someone who is vulnerable, hungry for love, eager for marriage, yet clear about what she wants in life.
  • excellent performances from both leads, lives upto the expectations post dumb laga ke haisha. they both choose good films which cover sensitive and real topics, making their viewing even better. disappointing to learn the story is a remake, therefore not an original, but, a great film none the less. the ending is slightly off putting as it becomes too unrealistic and quite bollywood. songs not so great, there could have been a nice romantic number by ayushman khurrana himself would have made the film better.
  • For me to choose between those brainless comedies and a comedy like this one, on any day I would choose this one. The movie highlights story of love birds where male suffers from impotency and still they get married. It happens all because of confidence from female lead and great response from male lead.

It is as if yesterday I was explaining my friend Viagra sustains erection and does not put one. To be frank I don't know the truth, but after googling I know it is used for the cases dealing with erectile dysfunction (impotency). For being a man of Science, it would have not mattered to me additional ten minutes in that direction. Yes it would have put light on some curiosity even if end would have been the same.

It's a humorous treat friends, general audience would like it too. Spend your penny, you won't be disappointed.
  • The film deals with what exactly is essential for a marriage to be successful. The answer is Sex...or to put it more sophisticatedly 'Physical Compatibility'.

The girl, Sugandha, has been shown to be a very simple small town girl with pretty orthodox parents – who sent her always to girl's school, girl's college and even in swimming classes for girls only. She has one close friend – who is of course a girl, with whom she shares her feelings and other secrets.

In comes Mudit in her life who stalks her often but never approaches her. She also liked the attention she got from Mudit and wished that he would come and confess his fondness for her. Mudit is very free with his mother and tells her about his weakness for a girl – but he can't approach her. His mother suggests that he should directly send them a matrimonial invite to sort things out.

Sugandha is both happy but a bit upset too as she wanted a proper love and courtship period and decides to go around and feel being loved till the time they get married. It is during this period that Mudit realizes that he is unable to get turned on by Sugaandha. There is a lot of pandemonium regarding this but eventually things are sorted out. They get married and after about 6 months or so, Mudit successfully 'performs' on bed! Some scenes from the film: With only one day left to get married, Mudit takes Sugandha inside a room – right in front of all the family members and relatives...afterwards, when Mudit comes out – he says that 'He had done it right' whereas Sugandha says – He had failed – maybe meaning to say that she had not been able to experience the climax of love making.....they say 80% of married Indian women have not experienced this all important climax at all.....though how the consensus is taken is not really known to me......and it is because of this reason that Indian women are frustrated and dissatisfied!! – that was quite a ridiculous scene btw.! Poor sugandha takes help of a porn film (Blue film) to learn the tricks of turning on men! Sad scene. Although it is seen and said also about males that it does not take them much to get turned on – as they can get aroused by looking at a dead image of a nude/ semi-nude model in glamour magazine.

Shocking truth revealed about Erectile Dysfunction by Mudit and his ex-girlfriend: In one scene, a slim girl, Mudit's ex girlfriend or maybe a fling - who appears to be a game girl too – in the sense – the types who dive on bed with any male they meet – just as long as they are rich or physically appealing or sexually virile or for whatever reason – claims that Mudit was very compatible with her and was not going through any such dysfunction. Mudit agrees that with the game girl – he was actually very virile and sexual performance was breeze with her! This means that this type of abnormality is more because the female is not physically attractive enough....phew! see this is what I always say – down with porn films and magazines! They make you form a different image of the opposite sex and the entire life goes wasted in search of some sexy siren you have watched in some cheap blue film! But Mudit was quite an intelligent man! He was looking for a wife material – and in Sugandha, he saw a perfect match! All he had to do was somehow impregnate her and after that, she would just take care of his household, looking after his children and house and of course serve his parents. That is why, although the slim ex-girlfriend (Slimy) was an instant turn-on but Mudit went for Sugandha...for he knew that Slimy would turn into a 'Desperate Housewife' whose priority would be to be on the look out for young virile males in the locality to have sex with...for such females children or serving in-laws etc. does not exist...many Saavdhan India and Crime Patrol episodes have shown such kind of sex starved females! Any way, Mudit compromises on this one lacking quality of Sugandha – but the rest were perfectly fine – sober, simple, non-flirtatious, virgin female, unattractive (so that other males don't view her lustily) – a good wife material.

The film is about the sexual problem of Mudit (Ayushman). This is a sweet love story and also a new concept. Suggu (Bhumi) does not leave Mudit even after knowing his problem and decides to live with him. Leaving the part, which contains some adult contents (Actually they are not adult contents, already about 1 million citizens of India are facing this problem), the film was about pure love and the support of the partner.

SMS is a boutique movie that includes comedy, performances, and message. The cast has delivered a great outcome in regards of acting as per director's desires. Ayushmann and Bhumi look elegant. The dialogues of the film are awesome with the added advantage of cinematography and scenes.

Bhumi has emerged as an actress and Ayushmann is dashing as always. The life of a common Indian family is defined superbly.

It can be said a must watch -an entertaining movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This story is about middle class people in India. Mudit is young guy not high on confidence. He likes Sugandha, but never musters the courage to go and talk with her. When his mother suggests to him to send a marriage proposal through a matrimony site, the ball gets rolling. The marriage is fixed and they start dating. One day they find themselves alone at Sugandha's home (which is rare in middle class families) and get intimate. Mudit realizes that he has erectile dysfunction and the story takes a turn. Mudit tries to hide it from his family and tries to solve it by all means possible and Sugandha is supportive. As the day of the marriage approaches everyone knows about his problem and complications ensue. The couple stay strong, get married and have a happy ending after a lapse of some months.

A light hearted comedy. The things I loved about this film were the subtle depiction of a middle class family struggling with tradition and coming to terms with the modernity and present day culture. The screenplay and acting are also good. Bhumi Pednekar is great. Ayushmaan Khurana has a set way and he gets roles accordingly. But I thought here he needed to be a bit more insecure perhaps. He is not convincing as a person with performance anxiety. A nice film.

Hindi cinema has come a long way with #ShubhMangalSavdhaan.. One could not imagine the topic of erectile dysfunction being dealt with in a full length feature film even a few years back.. And thanks to some wonderful writing by Hitesh Kewalya and a matured direction by RS Prasanna, the film does not get into the realms of tacky or sleazy even for a minute in spite of its central theme.. Rather it offers some real witty humor and sharp dialogs that deliver the message with all the pun intended and yet remains aesthetic.. What works well is the setup that is created by a bunch of very real common people characters portrayed adeptly by the lead cast and the entire ensemble surrounding them! And Yet, I was tad disappointed because I was expecting the film to be so much more, and it had everything going to actually get there!

  • Tales set in small towns of India seems to the flavor of the season. Recent hits Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, Bareily Ki Barfi, Sultan or Dangal has touched the heart and soul of masses. Apart from its setting, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan also explores the bold subject of erectile dysfunction with a aplomb.

Just few days before his marriage, a groom discovers that he is suffering from erectile dysfunction. Hell break loose on him when his family and in-laws discovers the situation.

Based on Tamil film, Kalyana Samayal Saadham, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is one joyful ride that will keep you entertained throughout. You will fall in love with the film, the moment you enter the premise. The film begins with a typical boy-meet-girl followed by engagement. Till here, there are enough scenes to tickle your funny bone. However, the film goes one step ahead once the issue of erectile dysfunction is discovered. If first half is good, second half is sparkling and few scenes will definitely bring down the house. The only loose end is the climax which could have made it perfect. Hats off to new director R.S.Prasanna for his creative effort.

Screenplay is tight. Editing is superb along with amazing cinematography. Dialogues are outstanding. Songs are decent but not chart bursting. Ayushmann Khuranna is just getting better with each. Watch for his when he dances aggressively at his "baraat". Bhumi Pednekar is brilliant. This is her third film after "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" and "Toilet-Ek Prem Katha" and she just surprises with her acting skills. Supporting actors like Brijendra Kala, Seema Bhargava, Gopal Dutt and especially Neeraj Sood(Bhumi Pednekar's father).

Overall, a fantastic film in every sense. Go for it. Highly recommended 4/5
  • I am delighted to write that finally today's film makers have found nice ways to speak on topics which are still considered taboo is our country.

It started with Sircar's Vicky Donor on Sperm donation, his Piku on constipation, Shakun Batra's Kapoor and Sons which spoke on homosexuality and Subh Mangal Savadhaan (SMS)which speaks on erecticle dysfunction.

SMS like last month's Barelily ki Barfi is set in middle class India, the location changes from Barelily to Delhi. Its starts off on a nice hilarious note of Khurana's Mudit trying to speak to Pednekar's Sughanda and a roadside bear ....yes a bear (watch it to believe it) catches him leaving everyone around him in splits and taking his MMS videos for fun.

They then meet for marriage and slowly fall in love over the next few weeks. Their love is just like any middle class love story. They don't run around trees or sing songs in park or dance in the rain. They behave like normal people and not like the love we see in Johar Chopra films.

So even when we see them trying to make love for the 1st time, they are scared and behave like amatauers. That scene is hilarious and trust me you will not feel odd seeing this with your parents. And that's when Mudit knows he just cannot perform in bed.

From there you have Mudit trying to do his best in resolving his gent's problem and Sughanda doing everything possible to keep him happy. She doesn't want to run away from the problem and face it while Mudit wants to solve his problem to express his love and keep her happy.

And this is where the beauty of the story lies. A man and woman doing their best for the other partner. In another hilarious scene, Sughanda wears some sexy lingerie and takes Mudit for a picnic and then tries to do a role play. The scene initally starts as hilarious but then becomes a emotional one as Mudit realises what she is doing and stops her.

The movies reaches another level when the parents come to know about Mudit's problem. Mudit's parents can't accept it while her father takes him to a Vetinarian for cure and is worried that his daughter will not have kids of her own.

However, the last act falls flat. One can see that the writers run out of ideas and don't know how to end the film. So we have a ridiculous scene where the couple are supposedly making love inside and everyone outside are chit chatting waiting for the result. Or an action packed climax with Jimmy Shergil making one ridiculous cameo.

The one question which always popped my mind was why didn't Mudit go to a doctor and get himself treated?

The performances are top notch. Khurana is turning out to this generation's Amol Palekar or the middle class hero. Armed with simple looks and earnest acting skills, he beautifully performs Mudit and helps us understand his problem.

On the other hand, Bhumi is top notch. It is her 3rd film and she performs like a veteran. And, Khurana and she share a wonderful chemistry.

The rest of the star cast including Bijendar Kala are fantastic. Most of them are unknown faces but rock the show. Kala is hilarious as Sugandha's uncle who always is seeking for respect from everyone younger to him including his brother.

The music is simple and there aren't many songs to spoil it and the middle class Delhi setting is perfect.

Except for the last half hour, the movie is a joy ride and a must watch.
  • Well to start with a movie based on the subject its made on, in itself was enough to drag people to the theaters and that's what it did. The star cast, the plot, performances all top notch but the film lacks in scripting and scree play. It could have been easily another Vicky donor or a chameli ki shaddi for that matter but the screenplay was not in place the movie lacked characters, even after such a great supporting cast, I feel the characters were not written properly. Like we had Anu Kapoor in Vicky donor or a Deepak Dobriyal in the Tanu Weds Manu series, we could have easily got one or two characters written on the same pattern to add more humour to the script. Bhumi Pednekar is a promising actress she has proved again if given a role with content she can manage things effortlessly....long way to go. Ayushman has made his place now in movies like these ...he is impressive and he is becoming a pro with roles like these. In total Shubh Mangal could have been a movie worth keeping in your collection but a weak screenplay makes it a one time watch.
  • First things first!

Movies like Shubh Mangal Savdhan (SMS) should be made.

    It's a good movie.

It's enjoyable and different from regular rom-com movies made in Hindi.

You need to be creative to comment on delicate subjects like erectile dysfunction, in a light-hearted and engaging way. The performances and writing have to be top-notch otherwise it will be a boring lecture for viewers. SMS delivers on all these fronts, story is good and nicely narrated, movie length is apt, performances are up to the mark (of EACH and EVERY actor/actress).

Having said that, you have to walk on the edge and shouldn't loose the track between entertainment and the message that you want to pass on, otherwise you would be either very preachy or only masala movie. This is where the movie lacks and it does loose the track. There are some scenes where you don't believe what is happening, you feel this much exaggeration is not required. The movie bends more towards the entertainment in some scenes, although it does gather some laughs, viewers won't relate to such scenes.

But, overall if you look at the bigger picture or the message/s this movie is trying to pass on, you will forgive all such wrong detours the movie takes. So this movie should be definitely watched.
  • rohitkothawade23 September 2019
Expected very high as the start of the movie and the first act were really good but as the story progresses it feels lengthy unecessary and stretched. The rating I put is based on the jokes and punchlines of the film. One Time Watch......
  • The taboo topic of the movie was enough to get most people curious. I also wanted to find out how this would work out. Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar were both great in their respective roles. I commend them for their bold choice of making this movie. I don't think many others would have done it in Bollywood.

The supporting cast were entertaining and the double entendres were hilarious. The dialogues were witty and I ended up laughing every so often. Some scenes, especially in the first half, were extremely funny. The last few minutes became a little far-fetched though. The conclusion especially was a little strange and could have been done better. Overall, though, I ended up liking this movie and would watch it again some other time.

    3/4(***)

Bollywood is famous for masala films. But now talking about examples of rare films, SMS is one of them.

The plot revolves around Mudit Sharma (Ayushmann Khurrana) a young, middle class working boy who falls in love with Sugandha (Bhumi Pednekar), but because of his shy attitude he never confronts his feelings thus he sends her a proposal on a matrimonial website. After a little here and there both fall in love with each other. Now things take a turn when Sugandha discovers that Mudit is suffering from impotence. What happens next is a series of laughter and giggling that makes you entertain throughout the film.

Ayushmann's performance as a shy guy is really impressive. He has always portrayed his acting skills well in all of his films. His love interest in the film that is played by Bhumi, must say that she also deserves appreciation for role.

The film is not a satirical comedy, it actually depicts how do men in India react after they realize that they are suffering from impotence and how shy they feel while discussing these topics in front of their close one's. In one of the scenes Khurrana explains Bhumi his problem with the help of a biscuit which really seems to be an innovative way of telling someone your personal problems.

Hitesh Kewalya has written a delightful screenplay, with loads of humorous dialogues and a few emotional scenes. So the writing goes well with the film. He has written the script in such a way that without having a single dirty joke or just talking about the problem freely is missing and that is what is loved.

    R. S. Prasanna, the captain of the ship has a good style of narrating the film and unfolding the story of the film. So, we can say that that director has become successful in making a masterpiece.

Thus, SMS will make you cry out of laughter and show you something that needs to be paid attention.
  • Shubh Mangal Savdhan talks of performance anxiety or erectile dysfunction, but in a light-hearted manner, referring to it as a "gent's problem". The dialogues are witty, the performances are excellent, the Delhi setting is natural, the supporting cast adds a lot of value to the proceedings. The mother-daughter relationship is well depicted. The first half entertains, but the climax is absurd n disappointing. What exactly were the makers thinking? But it's good that someone has raised this topic. Wish some other director comes up with a stronger, bolder n mature version of the same subject. Rating 3/5.
  • yasachandra10 February 2018
The movie is very loud at times with full of drama but the brillient potrayal of all this drama by the lead actors leaves you all the more enthused and interested. The movie has some very laughable moments. You will like this movie and can totally watch with your family.
  • Idea of the plot is very interesting and unique...but it could be way better...
  • I think last 15 minutes ruined the movie because until that movie was excellent but last 15 minutes was too much preachy I think apart from that bhumi did a great job.
  • shriramdhawale13 December 2018
Like other movies of Ayushmaan its also entertaining one. But one thing I didn't like is that the song of " Maiya teri bhakti" has given insulting tune of another song. This sillyness should be avoided by Bollywood.
  • The idea of a Hindi-desi film about ED was awesome to think of. It started nice, both the main characters were relate-able and believable. But just as the 1st act is finishing the film turns towards unrealistic dialogues and situations. Post interval its worse.

To my utter shock, scenes, situations, moments come as the part of the narrative that are utterly unrealistic and unbelievable and basic 'potty'.

What the hell were they thinking!!!! Super disappointed!!! :(
  • Glad to see this same Dum Laga Ke Haisha Pair Once again On the Screen! The Performance of All the characters are Lit 🔥 in this entire movie. Especially the portrayal of Erectile Dysfunction (Male's Problem) by the main protagonist Ayushmaan Khurrana is damn realistic here! He did a Smart job here in this entire movie, Bhumi also did a fantastic job. I can definitely see a shining star acting performance in herself for her upcoming future in this movie industry. Movie is not showing us any types of vulgarity, but still it have some intimate scenes between characters, so not a Complete Family movie! I Liked the Subject of this movie and special credits goes to Anand L Rai for it. Overall One time Watch I'll say! You'll enjoy it coz it's duration is also pretty decent! From my side it's 6 out of 10 Stars.
